Abigail's words were like a sharp sword piercing through Jessica's heart. At some point, Jessica felt like her heart had stopped operating. Staring at her stepmother and hearing her unbelievable words made Jessica's heart sink, her body completely getting numb.
The invitation was shared throughout the other rich families around Atlanta to come for the party. The next day, everything was set. The decorations were epic. The red roses placed at the entrance of the front door created a kind of epic classic rich scene that made everything perfect.
People from different rich families trooped into the mansion, prepared to come celebrate. What Abigail had tagged in the invitation letter was that she had saved the steel manufacturing company from the hands of bankruptcy, and she's now the rightful owner.
Jessica was in her room while the house was filled with guests. She well knew that today was the party celebration, but she wasn't happy about it. Now that Abigail had made it clear to her that she's nothing in the family again got her pissed, and she wouldn't want to attend any celebrations.
While Jessica was together with Caspian in the room, her door swung open, and a maid was holding a package of clothes in her hands. She approached Jessica and dropped it on the bed.
"Ma'am," she called out. "Miss Abigail said I should give this to you—that you will be among the people that would be serving the guests today."
"What?!" Jessica snapped, hearing the instructions the maid had come to deliver. Jessica was frustrated and angered, losing her temper not knowing when she flung the clothes from the bed where the maid had kept them, to the ground.
"Get out of here!" Jessica yelled angrily, her voice loud, filled with dismay.
"Sorry, ma'am. I was just following instructions," the maid replied politely, then gently walked out of the room.
Some minutes later, Abigail barged into the room. The sound of the door banging against the wall created a loud sound that awoke Caspian from sleep.
"I sent a maid to deliver a message to you, and you have the guts to shove her off? What's your problem? Are you insane? When have you gotten so disrespectful?" Abigail yelled angrily, her face frowned, her teeth gritted against each other as she stood firm on the ground, staring daggers at Jessica.
"But stepmom, we have enough servants in the house that could get the job done. Why me? And by the way, I'm disabled, and you know that," Jessica replied, her voice slightly raised as she protested.
"Don't you know you are also a servant?" Abigail responded, folding her hands against her chest as she gave a mocking smirk to Jessica.
Jessica was dazed, Abigail's words were cold to her ears making her remain frozen. "But..." Jessica tried to talk, but Abigail's voice cut in.
"I want to make one thing clear to you, Jessica. If you don't do as I've required, I'll have no choice but to send you out of the mansion—and I damn mean it."
After saying this, Abigail walked out of Jessica's room. Already awake, Caspian stared at all that had been happening. He gently touched Jessica on the face as he noticed tears dropping from her eyes.
"Mother," his sharp little voice cut in, snapping Jessica from the thoughts she was soaked in.
Jessica had always been obedient and respectful. Listening to the threatening words of her stepmother, she had no option but to bend to her will, doing exactly as she was told.
Jessica picked up the clothes from the floor and wore them, preparing to act as one of the servants in the party event held in her father's house, just as Abigail had instructed.
