Chapter 271 - Chapter 270: Everything To Today

"Jean, Lisa, what's wrong?" Seeing that Lisa and Jean were approaching with slightly serious expressions, Yu Xie asked with some confusion.

Jean and Lisa came to stand in front of Yu Xie and Ei, exchanging a brief glance.

After a moment of contemplation, Jean spoke:

"Yu Xie, there's something we want to confirm with you. It might be a little strange, but..."

Seeing that Jean was hesitating to speak, Yu Xie smiled slightly. "It's fine, just say it directly. There's no need to hold back."

"Alright, I'll be direct then." With that, Jean took out the book from earlier, flipped it to the relevant page, and handed it to Yu Xie. "Yu Xie, take a look at this first."

"This is..." Yu Xie took the book and, upon seeing the content, furrowed his brows slightly.

Ei, who was standing next to him, also saw the contents of the book and then turned her gaze toward Yu Xie, as if hesitant to speak.

"This page records the life and achievements of the former Vice-Captain of the Knights of Favonius, Rostam, from five hundred years ago. Is this... a coincidence?" Jean asked.

Yu Xie remained silent for a moment, then sighed slowly. "It shouldn't be a coincidence."

The answer left Jean and Lisa momentarily stunned.

Before coming, they had already considered that this might be the case, but hearing the confirmation still left them in disbelief.

The fact that Yu Xie was once the Vice-Captain of the Knights of Favonius... such a thing could hardly be called anything less than legendary.

Or perhaps, Yu Xie had many deeds that were not recorded. It's possible that long before, he created even more history.

"I don't remember those things from the past, but there is a friend who has lived for more than five hundred years. She told me that I was Rustan back then," Yu Xie said slowly. "Rostam was the name she gave me in Mondstadt, and with this name, I became a part of Mondstadt."

The atmosphere seemed to fall into silence for a moment. After Yu Xie finished speaking, none of the four continued the conversation.

The wind on Windrise continued to blow, the grass swayed, and the deep blue crystal butterflies flew over the treetops.

Jean's gaze toward Yu Xie shifted, with a hint of admiration, or perhaps longing.

After all, the founder of the Knights of Favonius Swordsmanship, the Young Wolf Rostam, was now standing right in front of her, even though he had lost his past memories.

Lisa felt the same way. Before, when facing Yu Xie, she always considered herself like an older sister to him. But now, she never expected that Yu Xie's seniority was so much greater than hers... She was no older sister—she was more like a little kid...

"This is how things are, but I am no longer the vice-captain of the Knights of Favonius. I am just Yu Xie now," Yu Xie said with a smile, as if letting go of something.

"Mm..." Jean snapped back to reality and nodded gently. "But please allow me to express, on behalf of the current Knights, our sincerest gratitude. Yu Xie, thank you for your past contributions to the Knights and Mondstadt!"

After speaking, Jean seriously saluted Yu Xie with a knight's gesture.

The sudden seriousness from Jean made Yu Xie feel a bit awkward, and he could only smile awkwardly in response.

"Now, would you like to join the Knights?" Jean asked, shifting the topic. "The doors of the Knights are always open to you."

"Mm?" Yu Xie was taken aback. He hadn't expected Jean to extend such an invitation at this moment.

"Not really..." Seeing Yu Xie's reaction, Jean seemed a little disappointed.

"It's not that I don't want to, it's just..." Yu Xie paused. "I feel like it would be a bit strange if I joined the Knights of Favonius right now..."

"Would it be strange?"

"Alright, Jean, with you suddenly extending such an invitation, anyone would be caught off guard. Let Yu Xie think about it carefully, and then he can answer you later," Lisa said at this point.

"...Sorry, I was a bit abrupt," Jean said apologetically.

"It's fine... but... I think I'll pass on joining the Knights," Yu Xie said with a slight smile. "I might be traveling to many places in the future, and I can't stay in Mondstadt all the time. I feel like, right now, I can't always carry the title and honor of the Knights of Favonius, so it's probably best to let it go."

"I see..." Jean paused for a moment. Although there was a hint of disappointment in her eyes, she smiled and responded, "I respect your decision. But still, the doors of the Knights are always open for you, whether you choose to join or not."

"Mm, thank you," Yu Xie softly replied.

After exchanging a few more words, Jean and Lisa left, leaving only Yu Xie and Ei under the large tree at Windrise.

The wind continued to blow, rustling the leaves on the tree.

"In Mondstadt, you were the Vice Commander of the Knights of Favonius, in Inazuma, you were the Commander of the Okuzumeshuu, and in Liyue... what were you again?" Ei asked Yu Xie with a half-joking tone.

"During the Archon War, I was the Deputy General in charge of guarding Guili Assembly," Yu Xie responded in the same half-joking manner. "Sounds impressive, doesn't it? They say I single-handedly defended Guili Assembly, keeping the many gods at bay, preventing them from even coming close."

Upon hearing this, Ei suddenly froze.

Although Ei knew that Yu Xie had once been acquainted with Morax and the other adepti of Liyue, she had never heard him mention those events before, nor had she had the chance to hear about them from Morax.

The memories of long ago had become somewhat blurry, but Yu Xie's words just now helped Ei recall a few things.

During the Archon War, there was a mortal general in Guili Assembly known as the "Defender General." This general assisted Morax in guarding Guili Assembly, earning great renown and preventing many gods who coveted the area from making any progress.

So that Defender General was...

Ei looked at Yu Xie, her pupils slightly trembling.

It turned out that fate is such a strange thing, everything is predestined.

"Ei? What's wrong?" Seeing Ei suddenly fall silent, Yu Xie asked.

"Oh, I'm fine, just reminiscing about some past events." Ei smiled.

"Past events?" Yu Xie pondered. "Could it be... that we met during the Archon War?"

"Not really, Guili Assembly is located in what is now Liyue's Guili Plains, and Inazuma is thousands of miles away, so there was no chance to meet." Ei suddenly thought of something, "But if we had met back then, what do you think would have happened?"

Yu Xie pondered for a moment, then gently shook his head.

"I think my sister and I might have tried to bring you over from Guili Assembly," Ei joked.

The two exchanged a smile, as the gentle breeze of Mondstadt continued to blow.

After a long while, Yu Xie looked at the towering tree beside him. In a daze, it seemed as though he saw the tree grow from a small sapling into the towering form it was now.

It was like the past he couldn't remember — though forgotten, all the past had never truly disappeared. It was imprinted deep within his soul, shaping everything that led to today.
