Seeing this scene, the corners of Freya's mouth twitched slightly.
Especially when she sensed Pidgeot's strength, she felt like she was going to explode.
This guy is so strong!
But...
"In that case...
Gengar, Mega Evolve!"
"Are you the only one with a Mega Evolution? Who doesn't have a Mega Stone in their hand? I do too!"
Freya stopped holding back and immediately activated Mega Evolution for her Gengar.
Evan wasn't too surprised. He had seen Freya's Mega Stone back when they were in school. As the heir of a Gym, it wasn't shocking that she owned such a thing.
When the light dissipated, Gengar reappeared, now larger and more menacing.
Mega Evolved Gengar didn't just grow in size. Its body was covered in spikes, and its coloration split into two contrasting shades.
"Geng!" Gengar called out, licking the air in excitement.
Observing the Mega Evolved Gengar, Evan narrowed his eyes slightly.
"The battle begins."
"Gengar, use Lick!"
Upon receiving the command, Gengar vanished and reappeared next to Pidgeot in an instant. Its long tongue lashed out, aiming for Pidgeot.
If it landed, Pidgeot would suffer from paralysis.
"Quick Attack!" Evan commanded.
"Pidge!" Pidgeot cried as it dodged, disappearing with astonishing speed. To be fair, it didn't want to be caught by Gengar's tongue—disgusting!
Now, Pidgeot's gaze toward Gengar became sharper, almost predatory.
"Pidge!~" Pidgeot screeched.
"Gengar?" Gengar tilted its head in confusion. What's wrong with that bird? Why was it suddenly so angry?
Before it could ponder, Freya issued another command.
"Gengar, Shadow Ball!"
"Ge!" Gengar opened its mouth, gathering purple energy into a massive, glowing sphere.
"Air Slash!" Evan countered immediately.
The two attacks collided in midair, causing a resounding explosion on the battlefield.
"Tailwind, then Agility—attack with your wings!"
"Bi!" Pidgeot responded swiftly. A breeze picked up across the battlefield, boosting its speed even further. In a blink, Pidgeot was an afterimage streaking forward. Its wings shimmered with energy as it aimed directly at Gengar.
"Gengar, Phantom Force!" Freya commanded.
"Gengar!" Gengar slipped into a shadowy void beneath it and disappeared, causing Pidgeot's attack to miss.
Moments later, Gengar emerged behind Pidgeot and struck with a shadowy punch.
"Boom!"
Pidgeot was hit squarely, unable to react in time, and began plummeting from the sky.
Evan frowned but didn't panic. "Adjust your position and use Roost!"
At the last moment before hitting the ground, Pidgeot steadied itself and landed gracefully, glowing faintly as it healed.
"Tsk," Freya clicked her tongue in frustration.
"Gengar, Venoshock!" Freya called out, her voice brimming with confidence.
Gengar unleashed a torrent of venom, the purplish liquid cascading from above toward the Pidgeot below. If the venom landed, Pidgeot would be poisoned instantly.
Evan wasn't about to let that happen.
"Defog!" he commanded firmly.
"Hoo~!!" Pidgeot screeched as a powerful gust of wind erupted from the ground. The whirlwind blew the incoming venom away, scattering it harmlessly.
Taking advantage of the opening, Pidgeot flapped its wings and soared back into the sky. The deflected venom was hurled toward Gengar, who immediately bolted away in panic.
Despite being a Poison-type, Gengar clearly wasn't fond of its own venom.
"Even I don't like the stuff I spit out!" Gengar grumbled in its own way, dodging the toxic spray with visible disgust.
"Twister, now!" Evan seized the moment.
Pidgeot flapped its wings rapidly, generating a massive, swirling Twister that sucked Gengar into its spiraling vortex. Gengar spun uncontrollably, unable to defend itself as the storm's force left it dazed.
"Gengar, dive into the shadows!" Freya ordered, her voice tinged with urgency.
Dizzy and barely holding on, Gengar managed to vanish into the shadows, escaping the Twister's grip using its unique abilities.
But Evan wasn't done. A gleam of determination flashed in his eyes. At the same moment, Pidgeot responded to some unseen signal from its trainer. Its body ignited with radiant blue energy, and a surge of power enveloped it.
"Brave Bird!" Evan called out.
Pidgeot spiraled through the air before shooting straight up into the sky, gathering terrifying energy. It then dove, streaking toward a specific point on the field with explosive force.
Seeing the overwhelming display, Freya's expression shifted drastically.
"No way!" she blurted out in frustration.
"You use your Psychic powers now too?!" she exclaimed angrily.
"Gengar, Destiny Bond!" Freya shouted, her temper flaring as she clung to her last resort.
Gengar's eyes glowed ominously, the eerie bond forming between it and Pidgeot. Even if she lost, Freya was determined to take Pidgeot down with her.
"Let's go down together," she muttered. "At least it'll be respectable."
Boom!
A thunderous crash echoed across the battlefield as Pidgeot struck Gengar with a devastating impact.
Evan's expression shifted to one of frustration. He hadn't anticipated Freya would use Destiny Bond so decisively.
Even if Evan wanted to stop Pidgeot, it was too late. The attack had already landed.
As the dust and smoke from the explosion cleared, Gengar was sprawled unconscious on the ground. On top of it lay Pidgeot, also fainted.
Evan could only shake his head.
"What a vicious move!"
Freya, hearing this, smirked coldly.
"I've been waiting to do that for ages. Finally, I've beaten you!" she declared, a hint of triumph in her voice.
Evan raised an eyebrow. "No, you didn't."
"What?" she shot back, her confidence wavering.
"Wake up, stop dreaming," Evan replied flatly. "Sure, you took out one of my Pokémon, but you still haven't beaten me. You didn't win."
Evan's calm tone left Freya visibly irritated.
Evan chuckled internally. What's with this girl's delusion of grandeur? She clearly believed that knocking out a single Pokémon meant she'd won the entire match.
After silently critiquing her flawed logic, Evan withdrew Pidgeot into its Poké Ball.
"Alright," Evan said bluntly. "Hand over the Badge. I won."
Freya pouted, clearly unhappy with how things had played out, but she reluctantly tossed the Gym Badge to Evan.
"Fine. But to anyone else waiting to challenge this Gym," she announced loudly, turning to the few trainers still present, "you'll have to wait. My Pokémon need to recover first!"
She then turned to Evan. "You, come with me," she ordered, gesturing for him to follow her.
Without hesitation, Evan complied, walking after her, leaving the murmuring trainers behind.
