The wooden staff whistled through the air as I spun it in a defensive pattern. Sweat beaded on my forehead, my muscles burning from the extended training session with Rhys. But physical pain was preferable to the emotional torment gripping my chest.
Ronan's laughter cut through the air again, followed by Lilith's high-pitched giggle. I refused to look, keeping my eyes fixed on my sparring partner.
"You're distracted today, Luna," Rhys commented, easily blocking my half-hearted strike.
I adjusted my stance, tightening my grip. "Just tired. Again."
This time I moved faster, but my concentration shattered when Lilith's voice carried across the training grounds.
"Oh Ronan, you're so strong!"
My staff faltered mid-swing. Rhys took advantage, sweeping my legs out from under me. I landed hard on my back, the air rushing from my lungs.
Rhys extended a hand. "Sorry, Luna."
I accepted his help, rising to my feet and brushing dirt from my clothes. "No, that was my fault."
