Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Mystical Knowledge

Jack, holding his cup, smiled. "You're quite the master detective now. We just received a notification from the Deputy Chief's secretary saying that you've already found the culprit, and the case has been officially transferred to the Church for handling."

Silas chuckled wryly. "What master detective? It's just some abilities gained by risking danger, nothing technical about it."

"But this efficiency is indeed very high. Your colleagues around here have a very good impression of you now," Jack said with a smile.

Silas laughed. "As long as you don't treat me like a monster and fear me, that's good enough."

At this, the topic grew heavy.

After a few seconds of silence, Jack changed the subject. "Actually, I'd rather Louis was the one who died. That old scoundrel has escaped the law too many times."

Silas asked with some surprise, "Are you very familiar with him?"

Jack shook her head. "Not really. He's a patrol officer, I'm a criminal detective; we're not in the same department. But I've arrested him twice and witnessed two very tragic victims. Unfortunately, he managed to get away both times."

Silas took a sip of coffee and said nothing. At this moment, he didn't want to get too involved with Louis; maintaining complete unfamiliarity was the wisest choice.

"I hope Louis has completely lost his mind and won't speak about his encounter at the school," Silas suddenly thought with a twinge of fear.

Although he hadn't left any footprints there, who knew if the Demon Hunters had some other uncanny means to track his movements.

"Damn it, I need to be even more careful, more cautious next time," Silas secretly resolved.

The two continued to chat idly. Silas found that although Jack had a rugged appearance, he was very upright. Moreover, once you got to know him, he was quite talkative and could be a good friend.

He was deeply dissatisfied with the current judicial system's bloatedness and inefficiency, and he detested the corruption arising from collusion between officials and merchants.

"This person is interesting," Silas thought, listening to Jack's complaints, a possibility forming in his mind.

People who held such extreme views and couldn't realize them, if given some hope, would often be willing to give their all.

Just then, Warren walked over. "How are you resting?"

Silas nodded. "Alright. Any results from the interrogation?"

Warren shook his head. "No, Louis's mind is completely scrambled. The Master has something else he needs to tell you."

Silas inwardly breathed a sigh of relief, downed the bitter coffee in one gulp, straightened his robe, and said, "Let's go!"

Jack, standing to the side, watched Silas and Warren leave, his face full of envy. "This feeling is truly good! To be able to quickly grasp the key points of a case."

Roland walked over and said calmly, "If you're willing to face the constant danger of going mad, you can take this step anytime."

A flicker of struggle passed through Jack's eyes, hidden beneath his thick hair. Then, he grinned broadly. "Better not!"

In the office on the second floor, Silas sat in a chair, opposite Jeros, who was puffing on a pipe.

"We Demon Hunters lose a lot because we have no emotions. Only this tobacco can give me some comfort. I hope you don't mind," Jeros said, exhaling clouds of smoke.

Silas shook his head. "It's alright. Compared to the thick smog in our city, this smoke is quite pleasant."

Jeros couldn't comprehend such subtle humor. He continued with his trademark expressionless face, "We just tested Louis's Spirit Vision. It has reached 15 points. Do you know what that represents?"

Silas shook his head, saying nothing.

"It means he has been influenced by mystical power at least at the Dominator level, for his Spirit Vision to have such an explosive increase," Jeros dropped a bombshell.

"Dominator!?" Silas's eyes widened in horror.

He was indeed horrified, but not because of the word "Dominator," but because he was shocked that he was being referred to as a Dominator.

Warren added from the side, "According to his fragmented words and memories, for some reason, he heard an extremely piercing and terrifying sound. This could very likely be a Dominator-level Musician, or some other unknown profession related to the mystical aspects of sound."

"I will report this matter to the Church. You don't need to follow up on it for now," Jeros said.

Silas nodded, indicating he understood.

After discussing the case, Jeros continued, "Now that you've entered the mystical world, it's time for you to grasp some fundamental mystical knowledge."

"Mystical knowledge!?" Silas's eyes lit up.

Jeros nodded. "Since you are still in your probationary period, you are not yet qualified to enter the Holy Blood Cathedral for systematic study. I will first give you a simple oral explanation."

"Okay! Thank you!" Silas immediately perked up his ears, listening intently.

Jeros seemed to enjoy lecturing. He said, "We are Demon Hunters, so most of our knowledge pertains to mystical creatures. Since you've already encountered a Lesser Ghoul, I'll briefly explain the system of mystical creatures."

"Firstly, mystical creatures are mainly divided into three types: Kin, Monsters, and Beasts. We classify them into nine levels based on Spirit Vision."

"Ten points of Spirit Vision constitutes one level. For example, the Lesser Ghoul this time requires 12 points of Spirit Vision to be seen, so it belongs to Sequence One. Another example, a Water Ghost requires 21 points of Spirit Vision to be seen, thus it belongs to Sequence Two."

"It's worth noting that while it's not necessarily true that a higher sequence means stronger combat power, it is certain that the abilities of higher-sequence mystical creatures are definitely more bizarre and terrifying."

Silas nodded after listening, indicating he had memorized it.

"Now, let's talk about the racial distinctions among mystical creatures. The so-called 'Kin' refers to those creatures that do not originate from this world but have crawled out from the Abyss and are servants of those foreign, evil gods."

"Wait! That sentence contains a lot of information!" Silas thought urgently.

So he asked tentatively, "What is the Abyss? And who are these foreign, evil gods?"

Jeros said calmly, "You are not yet qualified to know. Just listen quietly."

Silas immediately shut his mouth and listened obediently.

"Lesser Ghouls belong to the Kin. They were brought to various parts of the world by an ancient evil cult, the Cold Church, via airships. All ghouls are servants of the Ghoul King-Mordiggian. This name is no longer a secret, so telling you is fine."

"Damn it! It really is the Cthulhu Mythos system!" Hearing the name Mordiggian, Silas's heart trembled.

In the Cthulhu Mythos, Mordiggian was one of the Great Old Ones, known as the Charnel God, the Lord of Ghouls.

Jeros's perception was remarkably keen. Looking at the contemplative Silas, he said, "You seem to have thought of something?"

Silas, his face somewhat pale, answered truthfully, "I've heard legends about him before. He is said to be a very terrifying entity."

"Of course. Remember this: in this world, all gods, whether they are Great Gods, Outer Gods, man-made false gods, or truly existing native deities, cannot be looked upon directly by mortals. Because with such beings, the mere act of looking at them would cause our minds to explode due to the inability to withstand the terrifying and massive amount of unknown knowledge. If you're lucky, your spirit will be torn apart, and you'll become an eternal madman."

Silas swallowed hard after hearing this and nodded cautiously.

"Wait, if gods cannot be looked upon directly, then the two Demonesses didn't go mad after seeing my divine body. Is it because their tolerance is very high? Or is that body itself not a god!? But something else entirely?"
