She had been reborn.
She had returned to six years ago, before everything went wrong. At this point, Ning Zhiqian was still not her fiancé, and Cheng Anyi had not yet ruined the company she had worked so hard to build.
It was as though nothing had happened yet—she had been given a second chance.
In the hallway.
Shen Ming, dressed in a hospital gown, walked down the corridor. She was pale from blood loss, but despite her weak state, her beauty was undeniable. Her features, delicate yet striking, made her stand out even without makeup. With high cheekbones and a sharp nose, she was the epitome of an elegant, classical beauty.
Seeing her like this, Cheng Anyi clenched her fists. She hated it. From college onward, Shen Ming had always overshadowed her with her looks, even when she was at her weakest.
"Re Ming, why are you out here? The hallway's cold, let me help you back to your room."
Cheng Anyi said with a concerned expression.
Shen Ming brushed off her hand with an icy glance.
Cheng Anyi paused, startled. Slowly, she realized that Shen Ming had deliberately avoided her touch.
Her lips trembled.
"Re Ming, is it about the A project? Are you still mad at me?"
Shen Ming's gaze turned cold, but she didn't answer.
Cheng Anyi had not changed at all. Her acting was still flawless, pretending to care, looking all fragile and innocent. But Shen Ming could see right through her now. The schemes she had been planning—schemes to drain the company's funds—had begun long before this.
Seeing Shen Ming's silence, Cheng Anyi grew desperate.
"Re Ming, you said you wouldn't blame me. The company's finances are in crisis, and you promised to find a solution. What happened? Did something go wrong? Don't worry, if there's anything I can do, just ask."
"You've got it all wrong," Shen Ming's voice was as cold as ice.
"You're the reason the company is in trouble. And now you want to help? Don't you find that laughable?"
Cheng Anyi's eyes darkened.
Damn it, has she figured it out?
"I have a plan, actually. I was thinking of selling my villa in the suburbs, but now… I think I have a better idea."
"What's the plan?"
"Instead of continuing to throw money into this failing company, why not sell it while it still has some value?"
The last two words were said deliberately slowly.
Cheng Anyi gasped.
She looked panicked.
"Re Ming, don't act rashly. There's still a chance for the company, we can figure something out, just think about it..."
"Think about what?" Shen Ming's tone was cutting. "How about you start by mortgaging the house you bought with cash in the city center?"
Cheng Anyi froze.
How does she know about that?
The house in the city center…
"Or better yet, why don't you pay back the money you embezzled from the project? That might plug some of the holes. If it's still not enough, you can repay the funds you've been skimming from the company's accounts. What do you think, Anyi?"
Cheng Anyi's face turned white as a sheet. Her pupils dilated. How could Shen Ming know about these shady dealings?
This was supposed to be a secret—these were dirty tricks she had been getting away with.
But the way Shen Ming had exposed it so effortlessly made her stomach twist in panic. Still, she quickly regained her composure.
"Shen Ming, I didn't expect you to have a brain after all."
Shen Ming's gaze remained cold, unflinching.
"Oh? Is that so?"
Cheng Anyi narrowed her eyes, her mind racing.
The car accident didn't kill her. The funds were still in the process of being embezzled. She had planned to take the money while Shen Ming was in the hospital, but now she had been caught too early.
Her eyes grew cruel.
"Since you've figured it out, tell me. What do you want?"
Shen Ming turned away, gazing out the window. The green trees outside seemed full of life and hope.
"Just go to the police and confess. Don't make me do something I'll regret."
What she didn't know was that behind her, Cheng Anyi had already sneaked up on her.
"Confess? Ha, Shen Ming, you're still so naive!"
Before Shen Ming could react, Cheng Anyi grabbed her by the throat, cutting off her air supply. Shen Ming struggled to speak, but her voice was weak and strained.
Cheng Anyi was frantic now. She slammed Shen Ming against the wall.
"Shen Ming, don't blame me. It's a shame the accident didn't leave you a vegetable. Why did you have to find out all this? Why couldn't you just lie there and stay out of my way?"
Shen Ming's eyes flickered. She gasped for air, trying to speak.
"That… that car accident… was it… you?"
"Yes, it was me. So what? Don't you get it? You're so pathetic, always taking the high road, always getting everything. I did everything for you, worked myself to the bone. I deserve this money. Now die already."
"Cheng Anyi, there's a camera above you."
Shen Ming, slumped against the wall, gasped out weakly.
Cheng Anyi froze for a moment, then smirked.
"I checked before I came. The hallway cameras have been broken for months. Nobody ever uses them."
Her grip tightened. It was clear she was trying to finish what she had started, to push Shen Ming down the stairs.
Shen Ming, gasping for breath, her head tilted back as she struggled, barely managed to say the next words.
"I… I said… there's someone… behind you."
