Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 - An Unexpected Offer

"You are rather quick and direct when rejecting a request," the king remarked. "In some cases, knights might take that as a reason to arrest you."

I held my tongue, realizing that saying anything more might only complicate matters.

The king studied me for a moment before speaking again. "So, you refuse to speak further... Well, I suppose it's true that your world's interests do not align with ours." He then narrowed his eyes slightly. "Are you certain you're just a child?"

I exhaled lightly before responding. "Yes, Your Majesty. I am only sixteen years old. And if I may add, this is also my first time formally addressing a king."

The king regarded me for a few more seconds, as if weighing my words. Then, his gaze shifted to my clothes.

"One last question," he said. "What are you wearing? That black coat over a shirt… It looks quite different from the attire of our nobles and royals."

_They're still curious about my clothes?_

"This is a formal outfit where I come from, meant for official occasions. Though… the shoes are an exception."

I glanced down at my feet, where my casual sports shoes looked out of place against the grand decor of the throne room. If it hadn't been for the wedding, I might have been summoned in my usual everyday clothes.

"A formal event, you say?" The king seemed intrigued. "What occasion were you attending to be dressed like this?"

_Is he just curious, or is he simply nosy?_

"A wedding," I answered. "My older cousin was getting married."

The king hummed in understanding before turning to Ramon. "It seems you've caused this young man quite a bit of trouble, Hero Ramon."

Ramon bowed slightly. "Your Majesty, I take full responsibility for this mistake. However, during the blessing with Goddess Glyss, we will seek her guidance on how to return him home."

The king stood from his throne and placed a hand on Ramon's shoulder. "Very well. You may do as you see fit. However…" His gaze shifted back to me. "If you are unable to find a way back, Alve, you are welcome to work for me. I have a preference for young, intelligent, and resourceful individuals in my palace."

I remained silent. _There's no way that's all he wants. If I stay here, he'll definitely probe for information about my world._

This king wasn't just curious—he had an insatiable thirst for knowledge.

Ramon nodded. "Yes, Your Majesty. We will depart immediately for the central church and consult the Great Oracle, Lady Saya, for the ritual."

With that, our audience with the king came to an end. Following Ramon and the others, I stepped out of the throne room and steadily exited the royal palace.

As we reached the carriage waiting outside, Ramon sighed. "That went better than I expected." Then, with a determined look, he added, "Let's head for the church."
