Chapter 10 - Chapter 9: Moving Forward to the Frontlines

This is the benefit of being a Clan ninja. Even if you're not a privileged second-generation, there are still channels to acquire ninjutsu.

For middle- and low-level ninjutsu, once you prove your strength, the clan will provide them. If you want advanced techniques, you need to contribute to the clan and gain recognition.

For civilian ninjas, it's a whole different story. Acquiring ninjutsu is far more difficult, and they generally have three paths to follow.

The first is becoming a Chūnin leader who teaches Jōnin-level techniques. Not all ninja school graduates get the chance to be mentored by Jōnin; only the best of the best are selected. Most graduates are assigned to Chūnin who lead missions, and encountering Special Jōnin is a stroke of luck. To gain access to a Chūnin leader's techniques, one usually needs their approval, but if the teacher is stingy, even working hard may not help. Even with approval, not every jutsu is suitable for everyone — you might not be able to learn it if your chakra attributes don't match.

The second option is to achieve great merit for the village. Regular tasks don't count; the rewards for those are already allocated. To make a significant contribution, you'd have to risk your life. However, there's no clear standard for what constitutes great merit — it's up to the high-ups in Konoha to decide.

The third path is to latch onto a powerful ninja or a big clan and serve as a lapdog. Ebisu took this route, and it worked out well for him. He became a Special Jōnin and even taught the Third Hokage's grandson, achieving a decent level of success.

None of these paths are easy, and they are certainly harder for civilian ninjas than for those born into ninja families.

The original character, Uzumaki Yūka, was already an exceptional civilian ninja, a Special Jōnin who excelled at swordsmanship but had limited ninjutsu. This is why civilian ninjas rarely bother purchasing expensive chakra attribute test papers unless they are certain they can learn ninjutsu.

Being born into the Uchiha clan is both a blessing and a curse. At least for a long time, you don't have to worry about learning ninjutsu.

Not knowing when the next orders would come in, Uchiha Gen focused his energy on Fire Release ninjutsu.

The Uchiha clan is known for Fire Release, a bloodline advantage, and more importantly, he had Zhu Rong to help.

What could be more helpful for mastering Fire Release than understanding Zhu Rong, the embodiment of fire? He was the perfect reference!

This is why Uchiha Gen's first advanced Homiz technique was a Fire attribute. The progress was swift due to his continuous effort.

In reality, as Gen expected, his training speed in Fire Release wasn't as instant as Genjutsu, but it was still far faster than an ordinary ninja could achieve.

...

Half a month passed, and Uchiha Gen's strength surged. Even without considering his advanced Homiz techniques, he was already at the threshold of Jōnin rank. However, his physical skills and experience were still lacking compared to Jōnin, and those could only be accumulated over time.

Uchiha Gen had hoped to stay in hiding and train further, but as a frontline combat unit member, he wasn't in the Police Force, and could not escape the call for deployment. The Hokage's orders were not something one could easily refuse, even from the Police Force.

When he received the order, Uchiha Gen felt both relieved and regretful.

The relief came from the fact that the brutal battle at Shinobikyo Bridge, which had decimated Konoha's forces, was already over. He wouldn't have to face such a deadly fight.

While his own strength had greatly improved, the battlefield was still treacherous. One small mistake could lead to death, and he couldn't underestimate the danger.

The regret was that Uchiha Obito had already become a celebrated hero of Konoha, and Gen had missed his chance to face him. He had never crossed paths with Obito on the battlefield, and now, with the situation as it was, there was no one to challenge.

In Konoha, ninjas needed to register if they were leaving the village. Unauthorized departure was serious, and the consequences could be as severe as being labeled a rogue ninja, hunted down by the village.

Even if he dared to take the risk and leave, there was no guarantee that he would find Obito. Who knew where he and his group were stationed on the frontlines?

If he did find Obito, attacking him would be problematic. How could he fight him in front of Kakashi and Rin? Even if he could do it, the backlash would be terrifying — not just from his family and Konoha, but from Uchiha Madara and others.

Sacrificing oneself for the ninja world? Sorry, he wasn't at that level of enlightenment. He wasn't Naruto.

Gen had hoped to take the opportunity to attack Obito once he returned to the village, but unfortunately, Obito never came back. His residence near the clan's compound was empty.

If he had killed Obito, Uchiha Madara — at his age — might not have had the time to prepare another puppet. Even if Madara had backups, they wouldn't be as powerful as Obito. It was unfortunate, but the timing just wasn't on his side. Maybe Obito truly was the "Chosen One."

But in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't a huge loss. Obito was a familiar face; he knew him well, and had the advantage of foresight.

...

After reflecting, Uchiha Gen packed his supplies, rested early, and the next morning, after breakfast, he made his way to the entrance of Konoha Village.

The guards at the gates weren't the famous God Moon Izumo and Steel Iron anymore, but two unfamiliar ninjas.

A hundred Konoha ninjas had gathered at the gates, and as soon as the time came, the squad leader called out the roll, confirming everyone's presence before they set off in the direction of the Land of Grass.

Uchiha Gen's mission was to support the frontlines and assist in taking out the Iwa ninjas who had been deprived of supplies after the destruction of the Shinobikyo Bridge.

This seemed like a straightforward mission, but it was filled with risks.

Iwa ninjas were known for their unity, so it was unlikely many would surrender. Most would either escape or fight to the death.

The rear of the Iwa ninjas had already been locked down by Konoha forces, and a net-like sweep was underway.

The only way for Iwa ninjas to survive was to break into small groups and infiltrate the heart of Konoha, hiding in major towns until the right moment to escape.

However, based on the composition of the ninja force sent to assist the frontlines, most of them were combat specialists. It seemed like the Iwa ninjas had chosen to resist to the bitter end.

If the Iwa ninjas had truly gone into hiding, Konoha would have had to send more skilled search and sensory ninjas.

After a full day's travel, Konoha's ninja force arrived at the frontlines, located near the borders of the Land of Fire.

The entire base was situated at the edge of a forest, surrounding a lush green mountain. The base was heavily fortified with various traps set by Konoha.

They didn't have a barrier seal because the Konoha sealing team wasn't large enough to secure the entire mountain.

Uchiha Gen couldn't help but be impressed — whoever was in charge had done an excellent job, cornering the Iwa forces to the top of the mountain, turning them into sitting ducks.

Who was the strategist behind this? Just as he was pondering, a young man with golden hair, a handsome face, and a sunny demeanor appeared at the entrance of the camp. He wore a green Konoha flak jacket.

Behind him were two familiar figures: Kakashi Hatake and Rin Nohara.

The squad leader exchanged pleasantries with Minato Namikaze, with the squad leader mainly praising Minato's accomplishments. Minato responded humbly with a smile.

Minato's deeds had spread throughout Konoha and were quickly making their way across the ninja world. Many Konoha ninjas admired him, especially the civilian ones, who idolized him fervently.

After the greetings, everyone entered the camp and approached Minato's usual command tent.

The tent was not large enough to accommodate all 100 ninjas, so the lower-ranking ones were led by Kakashi and Rin to be settled outside.

As a Chūnin, Uchiha Gen could only be considered mid-tier in the team and was not allowed into the tent.

Thus, he followed Kakashi and Rin.
