Chapter 11 - The laughing shadows

Episode 11: "The Laughing Shadows"

---

INT. HEADMASTER'S OFFICE – MORNING

The Headmaster stands at his desk, flipping through a stack of old texts. His expression is serious. A low hum of magic ripples through the room, vibrating with tension.

HEADMASTER

(muttering to himself)

Not the right incantation... could be too dangerous... no, no, not that one.

The door slams open, and Grayson enters with a coffee cup in hand, unbothered by the chaos. He looks at the Headmaster, eyebrows raised.

GRAYSON

You've been at this for hours. No luck?

HEADMASTER

I'm trying to find the right spell to lock Kael's powers—before the Rift eats him alive.

GRAYSON

No pressure, huh?

HEADMASTER

Not funny, Grayson.

GRAYSON

Hey, at least you're not looking for ancient spells to turn your hair back to its original color. That would be true despair.

The Headmaster stares at Grayson for a long moment, his face stoic. Then he sighs and puts the texts down.

HEADMASTER

Fine. You're right. Let's just... leave it. For now.

Grayson smirks, taking a sip of his coffee.

GRAYSON

Yeah, you're gonna have to do something about that hair, though. It's distracting.

The Headmaster sighs again, rolling his eyes.

HEADMASTER

Not now.

INT. SHADOWBOUND HALLWAY – LUNCHTIME

Kael and Lana are walking down the hall. As they pass a group of students, some make subtle remarks. One girl whispers loudly.

STUDENT #1

Did you hear? Lana's with Kael now. The guy who's got darkness in his eyes.

STUDENT #2

I thought she was gonna fall for Rhea.

STUDENT #3

Nah. Rhea's all about herself.

LANA

(whispering to Kael)

What are they saying? It's getting louder.

Kael smirks, glancing at the group of students. He straightens his posture, pulling on the "brooding" act.

KAEL

Oh, nothing. Just the usual gossip. Let them talk. We're mysterious.

Lana rolls her eyes.

LANA

sighs Yeah, we're real mysterious alright. Next, you'll be pulling off the 'bad boy' vibe, aren't you?

KAEL

I am a bad boy.

Lana gives him a sideways glance, clearly unconvinced.

LANA

You're an adorable bad boy. And I'm the sweet, innocent girl who can't resist.

KAEL

That's not how it goes.

LANA

Uh-huh. Sure, bad boy.

They continue walking down the hall, their banter light, even with the rumors swirling around them.

INT. SHADOWBOUND CAFETERIA – LUNCHTIME

The cafeteria is buzzing with activity. Students sit in groups, whispering and pointing. Some are staring at Kael and Lana as they make their way to a table. As they sit down, Kael glances over at Rhea, who's sitting alone at the far end of the room, watching them intently.

KAEL

(under his breath)

Does she ever eat with anyone?

Lana raises an eyebrow, glancing at Rhea.

LANA

Maybe she's just... waiting for the right person to eat with.

KAEL

You mean, someone who'll bring a dark, brooding aura with them?

Lana giggles softly. Kael smiles, pleased with the sound of her laugh.

KAEL

Hey, you know, I'm kind of flattered. You think I'm a bad boy.

LANA

I think you're a soft boy in disguise.

KAEL

That's a harsh accusation.

Lana leans forward, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

LANA

You've got a good heart, Kael. You just need someone to help you embrace it.

Kael looks at her, his expression softening. Before he can respond, a loud crash interrupts the moment. Students turn to see Rhea standing, holding a tray with food splattered across it. Her expression is a mix of frustration and anger. She looks directly at Lana and Kael, then storms out of the cafeteria, the room going eerily silent.

LANA

(softly)

I didn't mean to upset her.

KAEL

(quietly)

She's not upset with you.

But Lana's eyes are conflicted, knowing there's more to it than that.

INT. SHADOWBOUND COURTYARD – AFTERNOON

Kael and Lana walk outside into the courtyard, where the air is crisp. The sun is dipping below the horizon, casting long shadows across the grounds.

LANA

You're not really a bad boy, are you?

KAEL

Of course I am. Didn't you see my brooding act earlier?

LANA

Oh, I saw it. But I also saw the way your eyes soften when you look at me. And that's not very bad-boy material.

Kael looks at her, a playful grin forming.

KAEL

So, you're saying you like my soft side?

LANA

Maybe I do.

Before Kael can respond, Grayson walks up, a mischievous look on his face.

GRAYSON

Hey, you two lovebirds done with your brooding for the day? I was thinking of testing out a new technique—you know, just to see if Kael's dark side is as dangerous as the rumors say.

Kael raises an eyebrow.

KAEL

You think that'll make me brood harder?

GRAYSON

Nah, I think it'll make you laugh harder.

He flicks his hand, and suddenly, a flurry of sparks and illusions surround Kael. They transform into a series of comical, exaggerated faces: one of Kael as a fluffy kitten, another of him as a dancing chicken. Kael blinks, trying not to laugh, but the ridiculous images make it impossible.

Lana bursts out laughing, clutching her stomach.

LANA

(through laughter)

Oh my god, Kael! You look so cute as a kitten.

Kael glares at Grayson, but his lips twitch, betraying his amusement.

KAEL

You're lucky I don't kill you right now.

GRAYSON

Not if I keep this up.

He flicks his fingers again, and Kael is suddenly surrounded by an illusion of a giant disco ball, with Kael dancing in ridiculous, exaggerated moves. The courtyard fills with the sounds of electronic dance music, and Kael's eyes widen in disbelief.

KAEL

Are you seriously doing this?

GRAYSON

You're supposed to be brooding, man! This is brooding 101!

Lana, still laughing, shakes her head.

LANA

(through giggles)

Okay, okay. I'll stop. But this... is too good.

KAEL

I swear, Grayson... if you do that again, you're dead.

But despite his angry tone, the laughter in his eyes is unmistakable.

INT. SHADOWBOUND LIBRARY – NIGHT

Later that night, Rhea stands in front of the Relics case again, staring at the pendant in her hands. Her fingers brush the crimson gem, and the shadows in the room grow darker. The pendant hums, resonating with the darkness around her.

RHEA

(whispering)

I'll do what needs to be done. Just... don't make me regret this.

As she clenches her fist around the pendant, the shadows begin to stir, as though answering her call.
