Chapter 22 - Aftermath

The air felt different now—lighter, almost as if a weight had been lifted from the desert. The creature's presence was gone, but the desert still stretched out before them, vast and unyielding. Yet there was a shift, subtle but undeniable. The world around them seemed quieter, as if holding its breath, waiting for the next move.

Eryx stood still for a moment, his fingers brushing lightly over the now-dimmed artifact. The once radiant crystal had lost its intense glow, but it was far from ordinary. Its presence in his hand felt like an anchor, heavy with unspoken significance.

Rona and Bastian stood nearby, catching their breath. Rona was still recovering from the strain of the battle, though her gaze was steady. Bastian, on the other hand, was looking around, his eyes scanning the landscape as if expecting something else to emerge from the sands at any moment.

"We need to move," Bastian finally said, breaking the silence. His voice was low, but there was a note of urgency to it. "That thing was guarding this place for a reason. Who knows what else is waiting for us."

Rona gave a slow nod, wiping sweat from her brow. "You're right. But what do we do with the artifact? It seems… dangerous."

Eryx turned the crystal in his hand, his expression unreadable. "We don't have a choice. This is the only way forward."

Bastian frowned but didn't argue. The tension in the air was palpable, and Eryx could sense the unease rising in his companions. They were not the same as when they had first arrived in the desert. The battle had changed them, and in a way, it had changed him too.

"Let's head back to the academy," Eryx suggested, his voice steady. "We'll figure out what to do next when we get there."

Rona hesitated, glancing over her shoulder at the desert. "Are we really safe, though? What if there's more to this than just the artifact? What if we're being followed?"

"There's always the chance we're being watched," Bastian replied, his hand still gripping his sword. "But there's nothing more we can do right now. Let's get out of here and think about our next steps."

Eryx didn't disagree. They had taken down the guardian, but the artifact still held its mysteries, and the desert had many secrets left to unveil. The academy was the best place to gain answers—if they could get there safely.

With a final glance at the desert that had nearly claimed them, Eryx led the way back toward the distant horizon, the artifact tucked securely in his bag. His senses remained sharp, but the familiar weight of the crystal on his back offered a strange comfort, as if it were somehow protecting him.

The journey back to the academy was quiet, the landscape unchanged in its barrenness. The heat was less oppressive now, the winds calmer, as if the desert had decided to grant them temporary respite. Eryx's mind, however, was far from at ease. There was something nagging at him—something beyond the immediate danger of the guardian and the artifact.

He couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The artifact had been the key to unlocking something greater, but what exactly? And why had it been hidden in such a perilous place? These questions swirled in his mind, unanswered and unresolved.

By the time the academy's towering gates loomed ahead, Eryx was nearly exhausted. The trials they had endured in the desert had tested them all, but he knew they were just getting started. The true nature of the artifact remained a mystery, and he wasn't sure if they had any idea just how much danger it could bring—not only to them but to the world at large.

Inside the academy walls, however, there was a sense of normalcy, a comforting contrast to the chaos they had just experienced. The students hustled through the main courtyard, their laughter and chatter filling the air. It was the same as it had been before their departure, but Eryx couldn't shake the feeling that the academy, too, was hiding something. The more he saw, the more it became clear that the academy wasn't just a place of learning—it was a place where secrets were kept, where power was hoarded, and where nothing was as it seemed.

He glanced over at Rona and Bastian, who seemed just as on edge as he felt. They had been through the trials together, but the unease in their eyes spoke volumes. They knew, as he did, that whatever came next would not be as simple as the trials they had faced. There was something bigger at play, something that had only just begun to reveal itself.

As they made their way through the academy's hallways, Eryx kept his senses alert, his mind racing. He wasn't sure what would happen next, but one thing was clear: the artifact had changed everything. And no matter how hard they tried to ignore it, the truth would come to light sooner or later.

The academy was only the beginning. The real journey had just started.

Later that evening, after the sun had set and the academy grounds were quiet, Eryx sat in his room, alone with his thoughts. The artifact lay on the desk before him, its dim light casting eerie shadows on the walls.

He reached for it, fingers brushing the smooth surface. As soon as his hand made contact, a shiver ran down his spine. The artifact hummed with an almost imperceptible energy, its power like a pulse, faint but undeniable.

In the silence of the room, Eryx's thoughts turned inward. Was he ready for what came next? The desert had tested him, but it was clear that there were still far more challenges ahead. The world was changing, and he had a role to play in it—whether he liked it or not.

He took a deep breath, staring at the crystal. It was as though the desert itself was speaking to him, urging him forward. There was no going back now.
