Chapter 21 - Guardian

The creature loomed before them, its molten eyes glowing brighter as the sands around it began to swirl violently. Eryx could feel the air itself crackling with tension. Every instinct in his body screamed to run, but there was no time. The artifact was within their grasp, but if they didn't act quickly, it would be lost to them forever—if not the entire desert itself.

Bastian gripped his sword tightly, his knuckles turning white. "We can't just stand here. We need to fight back."

Rona, already preparing a spell, nodded. "It's too powerful. We don't know what it can do. We'll need to be smart about this."

Eryx's gaze never left the massive creature. His mind worked furiously, piecing together a plan. This wasn't just any beast. It was an ancient entity tied to the very land itself—possibly a guardian created to protect the desert's most powerful secrets. Magic like this couldn't be defeated with brute force alone. They needed to outsmart it.

"Listen," Eryx said, his voice calm, though the adrenaline thrummed through his veins. "We're not going to fight it head-on. We need to find a weakness, something we can exploit."

Rona looked at him, her brow furrowing. "A weakness? Do you even know what it is?"

"I don't," Eryx admitted, "but I know we can't win by just attacking. We need to get closer to the artifact. It's the key to this whole thing. If we can reach it, we might be able to stop the creature."

Bastian glanced between Eryx and the creature, his expression doubtful but determined. "We'll distract it. You make your move."

Eryx gave a curt nod, a plan beginning to form in his mind. They could do this, but they'd have to work as one—separate but coordinated. He knew they couldn't afford to waste any more time.

As if sensing their intentions, the creature let out a deafening roar, the sound reverberating through the sand, sending tremors beneath their feet. The sands around it began to shift violently, rising in spirals as though alive.

Eryx's heart raced as he saw the creature prepare to strike. He wasn't sure how they could survive a direct hit from something so powerful, but they had no choice but to try.

"Get ready!" Eryx shouted.

Without another word, Bastian charged, his sword raised high, aiming for the creature's head. Rona, her hands glowing with raw energy, cast a protective barrier around them as she followed. The magic shimmered in the air, creating a temporary shield that would deflect the creature's attacks.

The creature, however, was far too quick. It swiped its massive clawed arms, sending a shockwave of sand flying toward them. The force was enough to knock Rona off her feet, but she recovered quickly, her shield flickering but holding strong.

Bastian was already darting around the creature, his movements swift, aiming for its legs. Eryx watched, trying to find his opening. The creature's attention was fixed on Bastian, leaving Eryx an opportunity to move.

He sprinted toward the crack in the rocks, keeping low to the ground to avoid being seen. The artifact pulsed in his mind, calling to him, a beacon that felt like a lifeline. Every step was heavy with the weight of the choice he was about to make. The creature had been guarding this for a reason. But the questions—what it truly was, why it existed—would have to wait.

He reached the crack, slipping through with ease. As his fingers grazed the surface of the crystal, a surge of power washed over him. This time, it didn't overwhelm him, didn't push him away. Instead, it felt like the artifact recognized him, accepted him.

Eryx took a deep breath and focused.

The moment he did, the air around him thickened, the ground beneath him shuddering with renewed force. The guardian roared in fury as it turned to face him, sensing that the tide was shifting.

But it was too late.

A wave of energy surged from the crystal, rippling through the air like a tidal wave. It shot toward the guardian, crashing into it with the force of a hundred storms. The creature howled in pain, its massive form stumbling back as the light from the artifact intensified.

Eryx's hands trembled, but he held on, focusing his will through the crystal, channeling every ounce of his remaining strength into controlling the power. It was a test—not only of his magic but of his resolve.

The sands around them began to calm, the whirlwind of energy dissipating. The creature staggered once more, its molten eyes flickering with confusion and fear. Eryx's heart raced, but he stood firm, channeling the power in a steady stream.

"Now!" he shouted.

Bastian didn't need another order. He surged forward, his sword gleaming with the same intensity as the crystal's light. He struck the creature's massive leg with precision, his blade cutting deep into its flesh. Rona was close behind, casting another spell that sent a bolt of energy slamming into the creature's chest, staggering it further.

The guardian stumbled, its form flickering, like a mirage struggling to hold its shape. Eryx pushed harder, calling on the artifact's power with everything he had. The creature's dark, shifting form began to unravel, its edges blurring as if being pulled apart by an unseen force.

Finally, with one last cry of anguish, the guardian collapsed, its body dissolving into sand, leaving only a lingering pulse of energy in the air.

Eryx lowered his hand, his body shaking from the exertion. He was exhausted, but he had done it. They had done it.

Rona and Bastian approached slowly, their eyes wide as they looked at the dissipating remains of the guardian.

"That was… unbelievable," Bastian breathed, his voice a mix of awe and relief. "I didn't think we had a chance."

Rona, too, was staring at Eryx with a mix of disbelief and admiration. "You did it. You actually did it."

Eryx didn't respond immediately. His thoughts were still on the artifact, still thrumming with power. He looked down at the crystal, its glow now dimming, but its presence still potent.

"Let's get it," he said quietly. "We've earned it."

Rona nodded, and the three of them moved forward, their steps cautious but determined. The trial was far from over, but they had taken the first step. Whatever lay ahead, they would face it together.

And as Eryx reached out to claim the artifact once more, he couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something far greater.
