Chapter 10 - CHAPTER TEN

JOAN'S POV

I was shocked to see Bradford coming down the stairs. Was I dreaming or my eyes were deceiving me. We stared at each other for some moments before I greeted him to which he responded.

The atmosphere between us was so terrifying that the gatekeeper had to leave. The looks in his eyes were that of hatred.

Was he asleep when the gatekeeper went upstairs to inform him that I was here or he dreamt badly.

What might possibly have gone wrong. We spoke formally as if we haven't known each other for a while now.

He spoke to me as though I begged him to employ me. What would I say, I literally applied for the job and after the interview I was selected.

Bradford calls me to check up on me once in a while, what changed now. Although it's been a while he last called. I never knew I would be working for him one way or the other.

He directed me on where I would be staying but his cold attitude towards me was nothing to write home about. I left his presence and called the gatekeeper to direct me to the boy's quarters.

After unpacking my little belongings, I came to the main building and behold Davis was here.

Is this fate bringing us all in one place or what? Davis was so excited to see me but surprised at the same time.

I was happy to see him after a long while. The last time I saw him was at the party where we first met. Oh no… that wasn't the last time.

The last time was when I hurriedly left the hotel upon hearing the terrible news that shattered me.

He couldn't understand why Bradford spoke to me in an irritating manner. Such is life. I went to the kitchen to rinse the glass cups as Brad instructed.

I sighted him watching me from where he sat. What does he take me for and does he think he is? I muttered under my breath.

Bradford had been a thorn in my flesh just the moment I stepped into his house. I didn't complain or attempt to leave because I desperately needed the job.

After pouring the fruit juice he requested into the washed glasses, I set them on the tray and went to deliver it to them.

As I was about handing one of the juice over to Bradford, the glass slipped from my hands and the content poured on him.

He rose up in rage and roared, "are you mad or something? Are you blind not to be careful with your steps?

His face was furious. I have never seen this other side of him.

"I'm so sorry, it wasn't intentional." I apologised, hoping he would understand.

"Sorry for yourself." He blurted.

"Take it easy on her. You haven't yet told me the reason for being cold towards her." Davis intervened.

I was so remorseful that I wanted to run from there. I needed space to think properly. What are all these anyway.

Tears trickled down my face and I ran out from their sight.

"Joan, wait.." Davis called after me but I didn't give him a listening ear. I went to my room and wailed till I could no more.

I heard a knock on the door. "Come in." I said to whosoever that was knocking. Immediately I cleaned my teary face with the hem of my clothes.

"How are you Joan?" I looked up and saw that it was Davis. He sat on the small bed beside me and patted my shoulders.

"Don't mind Brad." He is not always like this. Just give him some time, he would come around. He said.

I nodded my head in response to what he said. "I would be going soon and wouldn't want Brad to know that I was here okay."

"Okay." I responded.

"Let me have your digit, I would give you a call anytime anyday." Davis said as he handed me one hundred dollars.

"Manage that till you get your remuneration." He said as he stood up to leave. I called out my digits for him while he dialled it on his phone.

"Thank you Davis, I really appreciate it." I thanked him and he left. He was so nice to me. Come on Joan, you don't need to trust any man for now.

They would be nice to you at first instance and later shatter your heart after they had gotten what they wanted.

Bradford was nice to me at first but see the way he is treating me now. Same with Leo. I had to be careful and guard my heart.

Later in the evening, I went to the main building to enquire from Bradford what he would eat.

When I got there, at the entrance of the door, there lay a stilettos heel. A lady must have visited him. That means I will have to cook enough.

But why didn't he call my attention that he would be expecting a visitor? I thought. Even if it's not for anything but atleast to cook and serve them.

As I was about to enter inside, I heard a sound coming from the sitting room. The sounds that I heard were piercing to my soul that I had to check where it was coming from.

Hope it's not what I'm thinking. I mumbled.
