«I guess you enjoy playing with other people's lives, clone," Superboy said mockingly, kneading her fists, "You decided to cover up for that guy so I couldn't beat you up?
Wiping the blood from her shattered lip, Pavergirl frowned, and looked at the guy in front of her like a real fool.
«I don't know who you are or who sent you to get rid of me, but I'm not going to give up that easily, especially not to an idiot like you. The only one I need to get rid of is you, because you almost got a man killed.
«You're talking nonsense again. Is that how they teach you to cheat in the lab?
«I'm here, Superboy! Let's get her," Damien said.
Following Damian, the pink-haired girl joined in the fun, and as soon as she landed on the ground, she gave a startled gasp.
«Oh, she looks just like Kara. Did you guys see that?
Damian and Superboy glanced over at each other glumly.
«Wait, why did you bring her along? I could have handled it myself," Superboy said.
«I didn't bring her, she came on her own. I think John sent her as backup.
«Oh, shit. Starfire, go away, we don't need you here.
While Superboy was talking, Pavergirl flew at him with both hands. Tumbled him to the ground, grabbed his arm, and slammed him to the ground several times like some kind of dirt bag. At that moment, Damian attacked her from behind, but Pavergirl didn't even feel his blows, calmly turned to him, grabbed him by the throat and lifted him off the ground.
«Oh shit...that asshole Beastie Boy took the kryptonite.
«Kryptonite? - Pavergirl repeated glumly," I see, so you were indeed sent by Darkseid. I will get rid of you all to save this land, invaders. I will kill you painlessly.
«Noooo!" shouted Starfire, releasing a dense stream of green energy that hit Pavergirl and threw her aside.
Only an instant separated Demian from death, and he fell to the ground in great pain, struggling to breathe.
«Hey, are you okay? - Starfire asked worriedly, running up to Damien.
«It's okay... but we need to be careful with her. She's very strong.
«No wonder, since she's a Kryptonian clone," Superboy remarked as he stood up beside the other titans.
And so the three of them watched as Supergirl's clone rose to her feet, part of her white cloak-and-cloak garment burned away, and she grasped her shoulder painfully.
«Strange, but she doesn't look like much of a villain," Starfire said, putting her finger to her lips thoughtfully.
«Don't be fooled by her looks, she's clearly planning to kill you as well as me," Damian said glumly.
«Yeah...I guess so.
***
Will spent at least a couple of minutes carefully descending the stairs so as not to tip over the lid at super speeds, as he had just recently. And in that time, the super-fast Kryptonians could not only fight properly, but also kill each other if they weren't stopped.
Will hastily tried fumbling for them with the Sense Sphere, and finally found them out of the living, next to each other.
He ran straight to the wall at high speed, jumped over it, and found the Titans fighting and Pavergirl, who could barely stand on her feet. It wasn't surprising, since Starfire, who was stronger than most of the Justice League heroes, had joined their team.
"Holy shit... How am I supposed to stop them?"
As Supergirl fought off the simultaneous attacks of Starfire and Superboy, Damian came around behind her and prepared to stun her with some sort of device. Apparently he just didn't have any weapons left when Will took the Kryptonite away from him.
Will immediately moved toward Damian, knocked the device out of his hands, and shoved him shoulder-first into a muddy pit, into which he flew headfirst before he realized what had happened. He then pulled Pavergirl away from Starfire's fire beam and moved a few meters to the side.
«Hey, what happened?! Where'd she go? - Starfur yelled.
«It's Willard Light, he took her," Superboy frowned.
***
Will moved Pavergirl to the opposite side of the construction site, and they found themselves near the unfinished skeleton of a multi-story building, which was a gray monument rising a dozen stories up.
«Hey... do you have super speed? - said Pavergirl.
«And you don't look good," Will remarked smilingly, "I mean, sorry... I guess it's not really the right thing to say in the current situation.
«Come on...I've had worse.
Will nodded, watching the hesitant Pavergirl carefully. She didn't understand what was going on, or why the guy she'd saved was suddenly helping her. She didn't understand what was going on, and why the guy she'd saved was suddenly helping her, and why he was a hero, too.
«Nothing's going on," Will grinned.
Karen only gave him an odd look and arched an eyebrow.
«Nothing's going on?
Will nodded and pulled out a green pebble that was the size of a peanut and held it out to Karen.
«Just as I thought, you're not of this world.
«It's kryptonite, isn't it?
«Yes, and it should have worked on you, if you really were a clone of our Kara. But as you can see, it only works on Kryptonians from this world," Will pointed a finger in the direction.
Superboy emerged abruptly, but as he approached the kryptonite, the impact of the stone caused him to fall to the ground like an energized bird. A surprised Starfire hovered beside him.
«That was fast you got him... but why are you helping me? - Karen said.
«That's a good question. At first I thought you were really dangerous and didn't know your motives, but come to think of it, if you were fighting Superboy seriously, he'd have been dead a long time ago. That means at the very least you don't want to kill us," Will said, smiling slightly.
«What makes you think I didn't fight seriously?
Will shrugged.
«You can consider it an experience.
"Pavergirl far surpasses Supergirl in strength, stamina, endurance, and other stats. Her abilities are a total imba. Plus, without the weakness to kryptonite, she had no weakness at all. As I recall, some people considered her the second strongest after Superman. She falls short of Kal El stupidly because his power grows infinitely over time. Superboy is a poor imitation of her, and she could have knocked him out quickly if she wanted to, but she was afraid to kill him," Will thought.
A furious Starfire intervened in the conversation:
«I don't understand what's going on here, but weren't we supposed to capture this pretty lady? Why is that guy helping her? He's got a Batman costume! Who the hell are you anyway? - Starfire said, landing in front of them with her arms at her sides.
"Hmm... it seems... Starfire in this universe is a weirdo too, right? So, purely theoretically, she could be fooled...?", Will thought as Tamaranka shot her evil green eyes at him.
«Well... you know, I'm one of the members of the Justice League. And I'm trying to stop you from doing something stupid. The girl you're trying to capture isn't a clone, and we don't need to kill her. Look, her kryptonite isn't working, which means she's no ordinary girl. She's a Kryptonian from...
Before Will could finish, a boomerang robin knocked the kryptonite out of his hand and flew far beyond the construction site.
«Don't listen to him, Starfire, that asshole is messing with your head. It's a clone, she brainwashed him into believing that Kryptonite can tell the difference between a clone and a real Kryptonian! That's totally stupid!
«Eh, you can mess things up," Will muttered.
''Relaxed again and my ability to react has weakened? At least his words make sense. They don't know that Pavergirl is a person from another reality. Shit! This is so confusing!"
«She tried to kill Damian, and that's all we need to know. Get away from her, Willard Light, or you're in trouble," Superboy waved his hand threateningly.
«Oh, no, I'm not going anywhere.
«Then you're on your own.
«That was figurative... In reality, I'll leave because I don't want to kick your asses.
"And until I figure out a way to prove that Pavergirl is real..."
And at that moment Will put his arm around Pavergirl's shoulders, and together they disappeared in a yellow flash.
***
They found themselves... in Kara and Will's apartment, right in the living room. The atmosphere in Karen's eyes changed so dramatically that she jumped up from her seat in surprise and soared through the air.
«How did you do that? I couldn't even understand what happened. Was it a teleport?
«Well, in a way," Will grinned, lifting the couch cushion to show Karen the symbolism of the Thunder God's mark. - I left the mark in the house for emergencies, in case I had to get away from someone really fast. Moving to that mark is my exceptional ability. Now we're safe, you can make yourself at home. We live modestly, but, uh.
Listening to Will in complete seriousness, Karen noticed the soufflé lying on the table and rushed over to it.
«Oh, my God! You have my favorite soufflé! Can I have some?
«Well... yes? - Will said hesitantly, watching Karen shovel Kara's soufflé into herself.
It was the same soufflé that his Kara loved.
"Hmm...apparently they have the same tastes."
«Oh, it's divinely delicious! - squinting her eyes in pleasure and eating like a little girl, Karen said, and then, when the packet was empty, she sat down on the couch and began to examine her burn from Starfire's blow.
Her hand was not at its best, red and blistered, but it was soon healing rapidly. Just as Will had thought, Pavergirl's healing factor was slightly superior to Kara's regeneration. The wounds on her body healed almost instantly, making her a war machine. Karen shifted her gaze to Will with a frown.
«Even though you helped me, I still can't trust you completely. I hope you're not offended. Your motives for helping me seem highly questionable to me, though I can see that you're not a bad person.
«Well... the answer may seem rather strange. For starters, I just don't like to see a girl so much like my girlfriend beaten up for basically nothing.
Karen arched an eyebrow in confusion, and Will took a picture of her and Kara from the dresser and handed it to the Kryptonian. She stared at it silently for a moment, then put it down on the chair and held her head.
«I don't understand. There's another me on Earth?
«Sort of... this Kara is your alternate version.
«I still don't get it.
«And no wonder, since this is the first time you've ever encountered the concept of alternate universes, but trust me, they're real. Do you remember how you got to Earth? - Will asked.
«When I was very young, my parents put me in a capsule that was supposed to go to Earth. Then I ended up in Newfrench Labs.
«Just like that?
«I grew and evolved in the capsule until I arrived on Earth. Then I met Peter, who explained to me that Earth was about to face a serious challenge, and I had to help him keep the peace on Earth.
«Suspicious. So the Newfuch people found your capsule?
«Yes, we did research together to develop technology that was supposed to help people, but... my memories are scrappy.
«Can you remember what you were doing? Just a little bit?
«It's hard to say... all I remember is Peter, the head researcher, and some weird machinery," Karen pursed her lips in pain. - I'm sorry, I didn't even ask your name, did I?
«Will.
«Kara Zor El, nice to meet you.
They shook hands. Will sat down in the chair across from Karen and thought seriously.
«I realize it's hard for you to remember what you did, but why don't you try to remember something? It'll help me convince the League that you're not dangerous.
«We were trying to create a cure for disease. Yeah, I think we were working on some kind of cure. They took my blood and other tests to create a drug that could cure any disease.
Will nodded thoughtfully, remembering the data Vanessa had managed to find while hacking into the lab's network.
"Should I tell her right away that they've actually been trying to clone her all this time or, is it better not to?"
«It's strange that there was another Kara on the planet all this time," she said.
«Yeah... it's really weird.
Will chased away unpleasant intrusive thoughts, as if the Kara he knew could have been a clone of Karen, and all this time he'd been living with a fake.
"What if Supergirl never existed? What if I originally went to a universe where only Pavergirl existed?" he was completely confused.
At least when he held the kryptonite near Karen, he could clearly see that it had no effect on her. His Kara, on the other hand, had a serious weakness for kryptonite, which probably meant that at least she was from this universe and not a clone of Karen from another universe.
«I need to get back to the lab," Karen said as she stood up from the couch.
«No, wait, there's something I have to tell you.
«What is it again? - She sighed," What's going on is scaring me, and I'd like to talk to Peter as soon as possible. I'll listen to you, but only because you helped me with those weirdos. It's a wonder no one's stopped those bad guys yet.
«Oh, Kara, they're only villains to you. There's been a misunderstanding between you two. Do you even know what the Justice League is?
Karen arched an eyebrow.
«No, what is it?
«Please sit down, I'll try to explain to you what's going on.
And Will began a leisurely explanation of what the Justice League was, then explained her situation and why she had been mistaken for an intruder in a lab that had actually been trying to use her to create a copy of the Kryptonian all along.
Kara glanced skeptically at Will, highly doubting that his words were true.
«I don't expect you to believe me, Karen. But it's true, it's happened more than once. And before you, a scientist tried to make a clone of Kara.
Karen grasped her head in amazement and froze wide-eyed, as if a lightning bolt of insight had struck her soul. Will remained silent, hoping she could digest this information without difficulty. After all, Pavergirl had a mind beyond the human brain.
However, things didn't work out as smoothly as he had intended.
Pavergirl rose abruptly from the couch and threw Will a look full of bitterness.
«I have to see Peter. He has to explain what's going on. I can't believe he's been lying to me all this time.
"Ooh... I hope it wasn't a case of love, otherwise a lady in love would be hard-pressed to change her mind."
«I can't change your mind, can I? Maybe there's a trap waiting for us out there.
«I'm sorry, Will, but I need to know the truth.
«That's what I thought. Then I'll come with you.
«You don't have to. If what you said is true, you'll be in danger. You're just an ordinary man, albeit a very fast one.
«Yeah, but you're underestimating me. I'm Kal-El's friend, and he thinks I'm a pretty strong guy," Will hummed with a bit of bravado, making Karen's eyes go wide.
«You know Kal El?!
«Yes, he's my brother, you might say," he said proudly.
«You're a Kryptonian?
«Oh, no! All right, listen to me. We need to get to Kal-El, he's gonna help us. No risks, no spontaneous stupidity. Without him, I'm afraid we could get into trouble. Do you want that?
Karen was heavily silent for a while, then sighed.
«No, I can't bring Kal El into this. He must be very young. I can't involve my little brother in this.
Will immediately knocked himself on the head, forgetting that Karen had seen Clark as a junior. In fact, that was the case; Karen just hadn't seen the whole situation. The reason for her delusion was the fact that Karen had arrived on earth a full twenty years late. All that time Kal-El had been growing up and becoming a grown man, while she had been stuck in space and stagnating in development.
Karen's training program built into the capsule was designed for a Kryptonian up to the age of twenty, and beyond that her development stopped at that mark. Yes, she was physically older than Clark, but Karen's psychological age was only twenty. Thanks to her Kryptonian blood, she was practically ageless and looked twenty, if not less.
«Okay, let's not go to Clark. In the end, I'll be enough to help you figure it out," Will smiled.
"It's no big deal, right? I can easily defeat Superboy, and that's quite an accomplishment."
«Let's fly then," Karen said as she headed for the balcony.
Will immediately stopped her by the arm, seeing her surprise once again. He pointed to her burnt clothes and her arm. And there was a slit so big that her tits were about to fall out, but Karen wasn't embarrassed.
«We'll start by changing your clothes.
«It's nothing. We're going anyway.
«I can't fly," Will lied, holding back about the Batman costume.
«Why is the plan bad? - She answered glumly, with Kara's lips and Kara's facial expressions, but her eyes were different.
Karen seemed to Will like a more serious version of Kara, and that made him uncomfortable. He looked at her and felt some super strange feelings, like his girlfriend, but like someone else. It was just like the first time he came to this world and saw Kara.
***
«Why aren't we flying? - Karen asked grudgingly.
«Because otherwise we'll be easier to spot. You don't want Clark to know you're here before you talk to your Peter, do you? - Will explained.
Karen lowered her head glumly.
«Yeah, okay. Tell me about your Kara, what's she like?
«Well...
Will immediately thought of the comparison, because it was the first thing that came to mind when you asked Kara from the alternate universe. He involuntarily lowered his gaze to Karen's huge breasts, coming out practically an A-plus, but Kara's were a healthy C at best, maybe even perfect. The Kara here had long hair, and this Karen's hair was short in a kare hairstyle.
In character, at first glance, Karen seemed more serious than Kara, and they had different lives in principle.
***
After they had sorted out the plan and picked out Karen's clothes, it was evening. It was easier to move around the city unnoticed at this time. Sure, in some ways the plan was far from perfect, but they were still being overlooked, and that was a good thing.
Will had dressed Karen in Kara's clothes, which fit her just right (well almost) in every way. Karen was wearing a white sweater that stretched across her chest (poor thing), and a plaid skirt, warm black stockings and low-heeled shoes. That semi-business casual style. She was such a beauty that passers-by turned around in surprise and whistled.
Karen herself wasn't used to being dressed like that.
«And she likes walking around in this? - She pulled back the fabric of the sweater with displeasure.
«Sort of. Have you ever worn anything other than your space uniform?
«Nope, almost. Sometimes I'd wear a shirt, a skirt and a robe. And these, uh, what are they, shoes. They're so uncomfortable.
«Okay... whatever. Anyway, it suits you," she said, a polite compliment, to which Karen didn't react in any way.
«Thank you," she replied dryly, shrinking her gaze down to Will's clothes: leather jacket, jeans, and sneakers with a hat. - You, on the other hand, look no better than a thug.
«Come on, it's quite unremarkable in Gotham," he fixed his jacket by the edges. - Why do we need your Peter, if it's no secret?
«He's the principal investigator at Newfewch. Every project we've worked on together, he's overseen. Peter should know all the answers to your questions, and I want to know why he lied to me.
«You think there's a special reason for that? People, you know... not everyone is honest.
«I know, but I want to hear the reason for the deception from his lips. Maybe he meant well for me.
Will sighed disappointedly, picking up on the faint hints of Karen's feelings for the cheating boyfriend.
"It wouldn't be polite to disappoint her prematurely. She probably has no idea of the value of her genetic material, which is being hunted by many of Superman's enemies."
Feeling like he'd gotten his ass handed to him, Will tried his best to relax before that very moment of total fucked upness arrived.
«By the way, I have a strange feeling. Before I saved you, I don't remember much," Karen said quietly.
«I noticed. It doesn't bother you at all?
«It's hard to say...I somehow feel like it's not a problem. Like it should be.
"Sounds like the effects of brainwashing. We should take her to Batman as soon as possible, but I don't think we can drag this beauty away by force. She's too strong."
And so they approached the New Fuchs Research Center. This time Will wasn't going to jump the gate and go in like a bandit in a restricted area. He and Karen decided to do the smart thing.
They would stand outside a brick building, right in front of a gate that had no guards at all.
«We can just go in there. I used to work there, so I think Peter will understand," Karen explained.
«You have a lot of faith in your boyfriend.
«He's not my boyfriend," Karen pursed her lips in mild embarrassment.
«Okay, whatever. We could go there directly, of course, but it's a little tense. Without the suit, I'd be burned on camera and exposed to your buddies," Will said.
«Did you get cold feet? - She grinned.
«No, of course not. But if we break the law, I'm the one who'll be held responsible. You're not even registered anywhere in this world, you're a freak. It's funny, because I'm the same way.
«A trapped girl? - she arched an eyebrow.
«Forget it... Anyway, you don't really exist in this world. If I can prove that you're not a clone or a criminal, Clark will protect you," Will explained.
«Peter may have kidnapped me and conducted experiments on me by deception. You don't think he broke the law?
«That's only if we can prove it.
Suddenly Will remembered his conversation with Vanessa, who should have found some information on the matter by now. But so far there had been no communication from her. He touched the earpiece Vanessa had fitted him and started to make contact.
«Hey, Vanessa, you in here?
«Will...we're in trouble. - Vanessa's voice shook from the poor connection.
«Trouble? - He asked excitedly.
«This lab is not what it seems....
The connection was suddenly cut off. Somehow the interference reminded Will of the same interference that he had experienced during the conversation between Batman and Martian Manhunter. Only now he suddenly realized why Vanessa still hadn't contacted him, even though it had been a whole day.
«Is everything okay? - Karen asked.
«I'm not sure.
Vanessa had managed to throw an image of her location into Will's transmitter, and from the looks of it, she was in the NewFuture Research Center. It was underground, and the walls that surrounded her were covered in dark metal that seemed to pulse with red energy currents. An army of goosebumps ran down Will's skin.
«Karen - one question. Do you remember where your research took place? Underground, maybe?
«That's a good question. To be honest, I don't remember very well," she held her head.
«Try using your x-ray vision. Maybe you'll see something.
Karen nodded glumly and began to look through the ground. Her eyes began to take in the incredible view beneath the ground, and then she froze and opened her eyes wide, as if she had seen some kind of monster.
«It's... an entire base. It doesn't look like a lab! There's a lot of people... no, some winged creatures and... some girl who fell into their hands.
At her words, Will laughed nervously.
«Oh man, and I wanted to believe until the last minute that it wasn't going to happen.
The realization of what was happening hit him sharply in the head like a select hop, and he froze in place with shock.
"It hasn't even been a year yet and it's already...? I don't want to believe it."
Will clenched his fist, infusing his own body with unstoppable chakra. The space around him vibrated with untold power, a hurricane that he summoned by his mere presence. At his presence, Karen recoiled easily and cowered in surprise.
«What's gotten into you?
«I'm sorry," he grinned nervously. - I'm a little freaked out by what's going on. It's like getting ready for a wedding in a couple months and then finding out that tomorrow the world might be ending. I mean, forget it, I'm sorry, I'm just talking out of my ass," he said, holding his head. - Anyway, my partner's down there underground. Change of plans, we're breaking into this place and getting her out as fast as we can.
«I wouldn't be in such a hurry," came a cheeky voice from above.
Superboy landed on the road, right in front of Karen and Willard. Demian, Starfire, and even Raven and Beastboy showed up after him.
All the titans were in attendance.
«Will...I'm sorry, we got orders to capture you along with that girl," Beast Boy said guiltily.
«Beast Boy? You too? Guys! This is completely idiotic! There's some fucked-up shit going on down there! The world may be ending soon, and you guys are doing nothing. It's not a cloning lab down there at all, it's a whole para-demon factory! - Will shouted.
«I'll kick you off first, then we'll deal with what's going on in there," Demian grinned, clenching his fists.
«Your sister's in there, and it looks like she's been captured," Will said firmly.
Damian hesitated for a second, but then frowned.
«Are you trying to mess with my head? Vanessa has no business being there. Harley Quinn and Ivy escaped because of your negligence. Vanessa must be up at the Watchtower freaking out, trying to kill you for a failed mission.
Will tossed the image Vanessa had forwarded to him into the air to the Liberty Van AI built into the suit. It showed a para-demon factory.
«This is an image she sent from inside the research center.
«Stop messing with my head, Light. These images mean nothing," Damien hissed. - We have orders to capture the criminal and you, and that's what we're going to do.
«I'm not a criminal," Karen said glumly.
The atmosphere heated up to unthinkable degrees, and finally reached its climax when Superboy flew into Pavergirl, smashing through the wall of the building with her and disappearing somewhere in the distance.
Damien and Starfire stayed on Willard Light.
«You've got to be kidding me! - Will shouted.
***
«Raven, where are you going, baby? - A concerned Beast Boy asked.
«I'll check the building, something tells me Willard Light isn't lying. I can feel the Great Darkness descending upon the Earth.
«You're not serious right now, are you?
«Seriously," Raven muttered, climbing into the air.
«So why don't you warn the guys about it?
«Those half-wits wouldn't listen to me anyway. You can try if you want," Raven grinned.
Beast Boy scratched his head, looked back at his fighting friends as Pavergirl pounded Superboy's head into the pavement, and pursed his lips painfully.
«I think I'll stay neutral! Hey, wait for me, baby! Hey, I said I'm coming with you! - and turning into a dove, Beastboy flew after Raven as she flew off into the sky.
