Chapter 12 - 12 The Panda’s Gambit

The swirling vortex of the teleportation array slammed shut, leaving a ringing silence in its wake.

It was the kind of silence that screamed *something's wrong*.

And, oh boy, was something *wrong*.

Mia, bless her perpetually-confused-looking soul, was clutching her chest, her usually pale face now whiter than a ghost wearing sunscreen.

Her spirit core, that precious little nugget of concentrated energy, was looking less like a stable power source and more like a cracked glowstick at a rave that was about to end badly.

Sora, the usually chill panda-like spirit beast, who normally resembled a furry, oversized beanbag chair, was suddenly *not* chill.

He let out a whimper that sounded suspiciously like a dial-up modem connecting to the internet, then proceeded to do the one thing no self-respecting, fluffy spirit beast should ever do: he started rolling.

Not playful rolling, mind you.

This was a full-on, barrel-down-a-hill, *oh-god-I've-lost-control* kind of roll, aimed directly at Ethan.

"Whoa, buddy! Personal space!" Ethan yelped, barely managing to sidestep the furry avalanche.

But Sora wasn't aiming *at* him, exactly.

It was more like...

*through* him?

Simultaneously, Ethan's "Eccentric Immortal's Handbook" system – which, let's be honest, had a personality more chaotic than a squirrel on an espresso binge – decided to chime in.

A bright red banner flashed across his vision: **"WARNING! DETECTED SOUL-BINDING CONTRACT! INITIATING... SOMETHING? (System is still working out the kinks. Please hold.)"**

The "Please hold" part was particularly unhelpful, considering Sora was now emitting a low growl, his normally gentle eyes flickering with a disturbing, golden light.

And within that light, for a split-second, Ethan saw a face.

Not Sora's usual derpy panda face, but the stern, almost cruel visage of Master Wei, the sect's resident control freak.

"Oh, *hell* no," Ethan muttered.

He recognized that look.

It was the look of someone who treated spirit beasts like disposable batteries.

Sora, meanwhile, had stopped rolling and was now swaying on his feet, his massive paws clenching and unclenching.

Then, with a heart-wrenching cry, he did the *unthinkable*.

He reared up on his hind legs, a thorny, glowing sprig of… *something* appearing in his paw, and plunged it directly into his own chest.

Yeah, you read that right.

The fluffy, adorable spirit beast just *stabbed himself*.

Ethan was frozen, his brain buffering like a video on a bad Wi-Fi connection.

"Dude! What the actual – ?"

But then, things got even weirder.

(Because, of course, they did.

)

Sora's golden fur began to… *recede*.

It was like watching a time-lapse video of a dandelion going to seed, only instead of fluff, it was replaced by a writhing mass of vibrant green vines.

The vines surged outwards, wrapping around Mia like a living cocoon, pulsating with a soft, emerald light.

Another system message popped up, this time a little more coherent: **"NEW SKILL UNLOCKED: SPIRIT BEAST SYMBIOSIS! You can now (probably) control the vines! Good luck with that!"**

Ethan blinked.

"Probably?" He cautiously reached out a finger towards the writhing mass of vegetation.

The vines, surprisingly, responded, weaving themselves into a surprisingly sturdy-looking defensive net.

Okay, so he had a vine-shield now.

That was… something.

But the cost… Sora's form was shrinking, the golden light fading, his powerful aura dimming like a dying lightbulb.

The only thing that remained unchanged was his goofy, eternally-optimistic smile.

It was a smile that said, "It's okay, I got this," even as his very essence was dissolving.

Ethan, fueled by a sudden surge of… well, he wasn't sure *what* it was, but it felt a lot like righteous indignation mixed with cheap instant noodles, used his Drunken Immortal Steps to weave *through* the vine barrier, landing beside the rapidly-diminishing Sora.

He activated the system's "Ancient Text Translation" feature, focusing on the fading remnants of Sora's spirit.

Fragments of memory, raw and unfiltered, flooded his mind.

He saw Sora, not as the goofy companion he knew, but as a *tool*.

A "Spirit Herb Guardian Puppet," created by Master Wei, designed to nurture and protect rare spirit herbs… by sacrificing its own life force.

But there was something else.

A flicker of rebellion.

A spark of defiance.

The spirit core *pollution* Mia had suffered from, the very thing that was now threatening her life, had also awakened something in Sora.

A desire to *choose*.

To protect Mia, not because he was programmed to, but because… he *wanted* to.

Ethan's jaw clenched.

Master Wei.

This was *all* his doing.

The spirit core damage, use Sora as a tool.

The last of Sora's form flickered and vanished, leaving only the faint scent of bamboo and a lingering warmth.

The vines around Mia pulsed one last time.

"Ethan...", A hoarse voice, barely audible.

"This power...it feels... familiar."

Ethan stared at the simmering cauldron, the pungent aroma of a thousand herbs tickling his nose.

Mia, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and… recognition?

… clung to his sleeve.

Sora, bless his fluffy panda heart, stood between them and the bubbling concoction, a low growl rumbling in his chest that promised a world of pain to anyone who dared mess with his girl.

"Easy there, big fella," Ethan muttered, trying to project an air of calm he definitely didn't feel.

"Nobody's gonna hurt Mia." Famous last words, right?

He glanced at the system notification flashing in his mind like a neon sign: `[Side Quest Initiated: Prevent Adorable Panda from Becoming Alchemic Fodder.

Reward: ?

?

?

]` Seriously, the system had a twisted sense of humor.

But the situation was anything but funny.

Master Wei, that creepy old coot, wanted to use Sora as some kinda… "spiritual core container" for Mia's awakening.

Apparently, being a thousand-year-old sentient spirit herb came with a price – a ridiculously complicated rebirth process involving panda sacrifice.

Typical.

Sora, surprisingly, seemed resigned.

He nudged Mia forward, nuzzling her cheek with his massive head.

A flicker of understanding passed between them, a silent conversation that made Ethan's gut clench.

These two had a bond that ran deeper than the Grand Canyon, and Sora was willing to… what?

Become a glorified battery?

"Absolutely not," Ethan declared, channeling his inner rebellious protagonist.

"There's gotta be another way!"

He racked his brain, the system helpfully (or not-so-helpfully) suggesting options like "Offer Lucas a lifetime supply of hair gel" and "Challenge Master Wei to a dance-off." Nope.

Nope.

And definitely nope.

Then, something clicked.

As the flames beneath the cauldron roared, casting dancing shadows on the walls of the药堂, Ethan noticed something peculiar about Sora's fur.

It wasn't just black and white; there were faint, almost invisible markings, like… runes?

He focused his spiritual energy (the little he had, anyway), and the system chimed in with a helpful `[Ancient Script Detected!

Auto-Translate Initiated.

]`

The runes pulsed with a faint light, revealing a hidden layer beneath Sora's seemingly simple panda exterior.

And what they revealed made Ethan's blood run cold.

"Those are… a puppet contract?" he whispered, his eyes wide with disbelief.

"But… with Master Wei's signature?"

He remembered the strange energy he'd felt emanating from Master Wei's prized puppets, the unsettlingly lifelike way they moved.

Could it be possible?

Was Sora already bound to Master Wei, unknowingly playing a part in some grand, sinister scheme?

Mia tugged at his sleeve, her eyes pleading.

She knew.

She knew something was terribly wrong.

Ethan made a split-second decision.

He couldn't let Sora become a sacrificial lamb, not when there was a chance – however slim – that they could break this contract.

He grabbed Mia's hand, his gaze hardening with resolve.

"Alright, fluffy," he said to Sora, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"Time for a little… *panda-monium*."

He grinned, the gears in his brain already whirring.

He had a plan, a crazy, reckless, possibly suicidal plan that involved a stolen artifact, a whole lot of bamboo, and maybe, just maybe, a chance to turn the tables on Master Wei.

After all, what's the point of having a bonkers system if you don't use it to cause a little chaos?
