The morning after the ball, the gates of the central court of Caer Thalas were opened to the public. The hall of public audience was packed. Nobles, soldiers, merchants, and peasants — everyone wanted to witness the trial of the "monster" who had caused chaos the night before.
Drayk entered escorted by guards. He wore no shackles. His mere presence was enough to silence the room. But the silence didn't last. Upon seeing him, part of the crowd began to shout:
"Murderer!"
"Monster, monster, monster!"
"Off with his head!"
King Elion IV was already present, seated on the throne above the tribune, but he was not presiding over the session. He merely observed. The trial would be conducted directly by the Order of the Eclipse — and the accusers would be none other than the three remaining generals.
Lady Ithriel maintained her composure. Karvoss, the brute, stood with arms crossed, and Velmhar, the eldest, took the first step, his dry voice echoing through the chamber.
