In the original story, Jiraiya wasn't skilled in genjutsu, though he excelled at breaking it.
However, as Jiraiya studied the training method described on the scroll, he found it surprisingly easy to understand. It didn't seem as difficult as he expected, and he was confident he could master it.
The Toad Confrontation Chant was one of Mount Myoboku's core senjutsu techniques, a unique genjutsu developed by the Great Toad Sage. It required a specialized sequence of symbols and the harmony of toad singing to execute.
"Jiraiya, the Toad Confrontation Chant requires a high level of talent in genjutsu to master," Fukasaku explained. "These rhythms and melodies were written by the Great Toad Sage based on the resonance of our toad sound field. It's nearly impossible for a human to produce these sounds. Don't push yourself too hard if you can't manage it."
"If you can't master it," Shima added, "we can practice synchronizing our senjutsu modes instead. That way, when we perform the Toad Confrontation Chant, you can move with us without interrupting the technique."
The two sages clearly believed the odds of Jiraiya mastering the chant were slim.
In the original story, Naruto's senjutsu mode was independent of the two toads', which left an opening for Tendo Pain to exploit.
"Don't worry. I think I can manage it if I dedicate enough time to the training," Jiraiya replied confidently.
While the chant was indeed designed for toads, making it difficult for humans to replicate, Jiraiya had a system on his side.
If he couldn't produce the required melodies, his system, always attuned to his needs, would likely provide a solution.
If Jiraiya could learn to replicate the chant, the three of them could synchronize their efforts and cast the genjutsu almost instantly, pulling enemies into the illusion space in mere moments.
"Well, Jiraiya, if you can master it, that would be ideal," Fukasaku said.
Mastering the Toad Confrontation Chant in a short time was, however, unrealistic. Combined with his recent grueling training in Bath of Boiling Oil, Jiraiya was already exhausted.
He decided to take a break and wait for his next system reward, hoping it would assist him in mastering the chant. He had been training at Mount Myoboku for some time, and the next system reward was only a few days away.
After a brief rest at Mount Myoboku, Jiraiya released his shadow clone and returned to the ninja world.
Upon arriving home, he noticed it was almost noon. Tsunade would likely arrive soon with lunch, so he planned to eat, relax a bit, and then visit the Hokage's office to request the training method for the Multi-Shadow Clone Technique.
It wasn't long before Tsunade arrived, carrying a lunchbox.
"I've got great news—I mastered a senjutsu technique today!" Jiraiya exclaimed as he pulled Tsunade into his arms, a broad grin on his face.
"So, I deserve a reward at lunch today," he added teasingly.
Due to his intense training at Mount Myoboku, he had been spending much less time with Tsunade recently. He planned to make up for that today.
"You've mastered senjutsu already?" Tsunade asked, her eyes wide with astonishment.
Having trained occasionally at Shikkotsu Forest, where a sage resided, Tsunade understood just how challenging senjutsu was.
"The only thing driving me forward is the thought of seeing you more often," Jiraiya said with a smile. "The sooner I master senjutsu, the sooner I can spend more time with you. Every day at Mount Myoboku, I push myself to the brink of collapse. But whenever I think of you, I find the strength to keep going."
Tsunade was deeply moved by his words. Her heart filled with warmth, she wrapped her arms around Jiraiya's neck and kissed him.
After a while, they broke apart.
"What kind of reward are you looking for?" Tsunade asked.
Jiraiya leaned close and whispered in her ear. Tsunade's face turned bright red. She had read enough of Jiraiya's manga to understand exactly what he meant.
"Fine. After lunch," she replied, nodding shyly.
Her agreement left Jiraiya ecstatic. He quickly finished his lunch and led Tsunade to the bedroom, where he set up a barrier for privacy.
After a spirited competition between the two, Tsunade ultimately conceded defeat.
After their time together, Jiraiya asked, "Have there been any missions from sensei lately?"
During his time at Mount Myoboku, Jiraiya hadn't informed Hiruzen Sarutobi of his senjutsu training, only saying he needed to practice a secret technique. As a result, he hadn't received any missions recently and was unsure if his ANBU teams had been assigned any tasks.
He wanted to gauge when the Second Shinobi War might escalate. If Konoha began attacking the Land of Rain, he wouldn't be able to stay at Mount Myoboku much longer.
"Recently, Sensei has sent our team on a few missions to escort supplies to the Rain border, but there haven't been any battles," Tsunade replied.
The fact that Konoha had begun transporting supplies to the border meant they were preparing for a full-scale invasion of the Land of Rain. As the saying goes, "An army marches on its stomach." Ensuring a steady supply line is critical to winning a war.
The Second Shinobi War was about to erupt, and Jiraiya saw it as an opportunity to earn fame and merit.
After spending a bit more time with Tsunade, Jiraiya left for the Hokage's office to request the Multi-Shadow Clone Technique. Meanwhile, Tsunade returned to the Senju Clan compound to continue her training.
With war looming, every Konoha ninja was doing everything they could to grow stronger.
