Chapter 8 - White Oak

Not wishing to get blood all over the back of his car, he opens Damon's back door and tosses him in, not bothering with his guts as it gets caught in the door hanging out.

"We'll take his, I don't want to get mine dirty. I'll have to come back later to get it," he said, getting into the driver's seat,

"We can always have Troy pick it up," said Sage casually slipping into the passenger seat and they drove off.

Finn frowned, "Who's Troy?"

Sage suddenly felt like she said something she shouldn't have and went deathly quiet.

"Sage, who's Troy?" asked Finn firmly.

"He's… a vampire I made," said Sage hesitantly.

"What!" He yells slamming the brakes, destroying the pedal.

They sit there in silence for what feels like hours as the car creeps along, Finn not wishing to lash out and say something he'd regret, and Sage out of fear of having him hate her.

When he spoke, it wasn't out of anger; it was far worse. He was disappointed in her. "I can't believe you did that. You're telling me I have a sire line of vampires out there."

"Yes," She choked through watery eyes.

He sighed, so much for his simple plan of getting rid of all vampires except him, and her. At least he would still have something to do afterward, and eat, he thought optimistically.

"It's fine we can deal with it," said Finn, pressing the gas, unconcerned with the missing break.

"By the way, what were you and Rebekah doing at the bridge anyways?" asked Finn.

"Ah, you don't know? She was burning the white oak," said Sage.

"White oak? Explain," ordered Finn, taking his foot off the gas.

"The tree that can kill you, it had a sapling that grew and was cut down to build the bridge," said Sage.

With a scowl Finn slams his foot at the missing break and then quickly turns the wheel, spinning the car out of control nearly flipping it.

"Finn! What's wrong? I told you she burned it," said Sage, bracing herself.

"White oak creates white ash that could still be useful and must be accounted for," Finn growled. Turning the car back around towards the bridge and hitting the gas.

"You need to slow down at this rate you'll overshoot it," said Sage.

Taking her advice, he takes his foot off the gas as the bridge comes into view.

"Use the parking brake," said Sage when they made it back safely.

Doing so, he jumps out of the car and speeds over to the dwindling bonfire. Taking the burnt oak logs, he tosses them into the trunk and wipes the ash away.

Hopping back in the car, they take off.

Just when he thought his sister couldn't get any dumber, he finds she left an entire bonfire of white oak alone.

During the drive home, they talk about everything he's missed, how the world has changed, and how vampires are still considered a myth. She explains that groups of vampires and some witches are out there in the shadows, controlling what the world knows.

He considers the possibility that the world may plunge into crisis should the vampires in control die, but ultimately decides it for the best.

"You're different than I recall," said Sage.

"Let's just say, I had some much-needed forced perspective, and I'm not planning on missing out on anything this time. I hope you're ready," Finn grinned.

"Absolutely I am," Sage grinned, surprised to find she could love him any more than she already did.

.

"Alright I'm at the bridge and I don't see Damon anywhere," said Stefan, talking on his phone.

"Something must have happened, he told us he was going there and that he would be right back with the white oak," said Alaric.

"I see what could be tire marks from his car and a dark burn spot at the bridge… damn it, it looks like all the white oak is gone," said Stefan.

"You think he got it?" asked Alaric.

"I think they got him and burned it," said Stefan.

"That's not good… So, now what?" asked Alaric.

"I don't know…" said Stefan, looking around feeling lost, "Wait, I see something, there's a car."

"Yeah so?" said Alaric.

"A new abandoned car out here at a closed bridge, don't you think that's a little suspicious?" asked Stefan, speeding over and shattering the driver's window with his elbow.

"Maybe, find anything?" asked Alaric.

"No, no ID, no receipts, no nothing," Stefan sighed, going through the glove compartment and other nooks and crannies.

"Hold on, aren't you restoring that sign for the bridge? That wouldn't happen to have come from the same wide oak by chance, would it?" asked Stefan.

"Why yes I am, and I believe it just might," said Alaric enthusiastically, rushing towards the sign, "But what about Damon?"

"Maybe we can cut a deal. Either way, we're going to need those stakes if we want a chance at saving him," said Stefan.

"I'm on it," said Alaric, ready to create a fresh batch of white oak stakes.

.

That night Bonnie received a knock on her door.

"Hello darling, may I introduce my…" was all Kol got out before he was flung away by her magic, rolling along the ground.

"Rude, there's no need for…" then once more he was flung to a tree.

"What are you doing here?" she asked with her hands raised keeping him pinned.

"Well, I was trying to introduce myself," he explained amusedly.

"Don't bother I know who you are, and if you don't want a deadly migraine, I suggest you leave," she threatened, emphasizing her point with a squeeze of her hand, his head erupting with pain.

"Argh, there's really no need for that, I come in peace," he said, squinting through the pain.

"Peace? After what your families done?" she spat, her nose bleeding given the strain of holding down an Original.

"But not me," he emphasized.

She snorts contemptuously, "I heard what you tried to do to Matt," but releases him, wiping the blood from her nose.

Landing unceremoniously, he gives a wiry grin, "Ah yes, the footballer, I honestly didn't mean anything by it. There was a bit of miscommunication with my sister and some misguided attempt at revenge against your doppelganger," he said dusting himself off.

"uh huh," she said in disbelief.

He grinned. "Let's not dwell on the past; let's talk about you. Your use of magic is crude at best and is being woefully wasted."

"I can always go back to throwing you around crudely," she scoffed.

"No need to be offended, I'm offering to teach you. Your raw use of magic, while impressive, Is mostly due to your incredible power rather than any notable skill, and though it has its uses, a witch's power has always lied in her spells," he explained.

"And what do you want?" she asked, growing tired of him.

"How would you like to help me get back at Niklaus once and for all?" asked Kol with a wicked grin. He's never met a witch he couldn't woo, Bennett or otherwise.

"And why should I believe you?" asked Bonnie skeptically.

"Why shouldn't you?" asked Kol innocently.

"I don't know, maybe because he's your brother, not to mention how every one of the members of your family we've dealt with has gone back on their word," she spat.

Kol frowned. "You don't put those you love in boxes, and I should hope you don't lump us all as one."

She couldn't help but feel her heartstrings be pulled by the hurt in his voice.

"Okay, say I believe you, what exactly do you have in mind?" she asked, somewhat intrigued and with little to lose.

Kol grinned, "First, you need to help me find a diamond."
