Chapter 39 - Welcome to Atlanta Part 1

Two lovely mermaids, one with blue hair and the other with jet black hair and attire (a rather gothic mermaid), enjoying today's weather on a small island.

As they talk and converse, the blue-haired mermaid perks up in excitement as she sees a commotion in the ocean.

Breaking out her telescope to get a better view of the action, she sees a circle of sharks busily fighting and tearing apart some piece of meat so that they can feast.

Zooming in on the brutal biting, the blue-haired mermaid gasps in terror as she sees what they are tearing away at is a human.

"Ohh my," she says, saddened at the gruesome death. The sharks all swim away, but the body is still there. "That's weird, that many sharks and still a body floating around?"

"I've never seen a dead human before. Let's bring it over here," the goth friend suggests.

"Eww, no!" Blue hair objects, but the goth has already started chanting and waving her hands around, forcing the waves to pull towards them.

"I see those magic skills have gotten better."

"Yeah, my grandmother makes me practice a lot, but they always give me the munchies, " the goth friend says, holding her stomach.

With the body coming closer, the girls notice all the white fragments in the ocean that pulled towards them as well. "These are shark teeth," Blue hair mentions after a quick examination.

"Souvies," the goth girl says unexcitingly. Then, the body washes up. "Speaking of Souvies, if he were still alive, I would take him home, too, " the goth girl says, getting a close look at Cordayl.

Blue hair agrees, too, and notices that he doesn't have a single bite mark on his body. "How does he even still have limbs?" She wonders.

Continuing to look over him, he seems to have no injuries at all. In fact, he looks like he's sleeping. Curious, she touches his chest right where his heart would be.

"Eww, gross," the goth girl says. Blue hair ignores her, and his heart is still beating, to her surprise.

"He's alive!" She shouts.

"No way. How?" Goth girl asks.

"I don't know, but he seems to be comatose right now. Put a spell on him so I can take him to my office," Blue hair tells her.

"What! Are you crazy? I know you're a little ditzy, but heck no. Humans don't get to come to the bottom of the sea. They aren't supposed to," the goth mermaid tells her.

"It is my duty as a doctor to make sure all those in need receive the proper care and medical attention needed until nursed back to health," the blue-haired mermaid reminds her friend of her professional code.

"You're a veterinarian," The goth girl corrects her with a straight face.

"Yeah, but leaving him here would still be neglectful and unethical," blue-hair stands firm.

The goth mermaid isn't convinced, though. "Save the big words. You just said he doesn't have a scratch on his body. He isn't hurt," she restates her friend's analysis.

"But he's still unconscious, which means whatever damage he has sustained isn't healed yet. And I won't leave him up here to be seafood." the blue mermaid states, staring her friend right in the eyes to let her know she is serious.

The goth girl whimpers, "Come on, I just told you using magic gives me the munchies."

"Girl, I will cook you something back at the dome. Just cast the spell quickly before we end up lost because of this storm, " the blue-haired mermaid demands.

The goth girl sucks her teeth and then sucks in a gale of air in preparation for her spell. Letting out her long incantation, the spell is cast on Cordayl. Breathing hard, with a stomach growl you could hear from underwater, the gothic mermaid ask her friend, "Are you happy now?"

The blue-haired mermaid smiles as she responds, "Very. Don't forget to cancel your first spell, or the wind will continue to push the water," she reminds her, grabbing Cordayl and swimming away.

"Ohh, you mean like how you forgot the rules of Atlanta?" Goth girl says, canceling her first spell and following after her friend back home.

Cordayl awakens to find himself on a strange table of some sort. Sitting up, he looks at his surroundings to see many schools of fish swimming around him as if he weren't there.

As he watches the fish merrily swim around the giant glass dome, he notices an exotic and pretty mermaid swimming around with a clipboard. When she finally notices Cordayl, all her movement stops as their eyes lock for the first time.

She swims over to him and speaks, and Cordayl instantly loves her aquatic voice. "I see you're finally up. How are you feeling?" she asks, checking his vitals with her doctor's tools.

"Fine," Cordayl answers. "Well rested and starving. How long have I been asleep?" Cordayl ask.

"About 30 hours since I found you," the mermaid says, still checking his vital functions.

"Cool, cool. So, next question, I can see that I'm underwater… but how am I breathing down here?" Cordayl questions.

"I had my friend cast a spell on you. You should be able to function down here for as long as she keeps the spell up. Which might be forever because, knowing her, she probably has already forgotten she has cast it. So yeah, you breathe underwater now," the pretty mermaid informs Cordayl, smiling as she finishes her quick check-up.

"You're one tough saltine, though. About five sharks were trying to snack on you when I found you," she lightly jokes.

"Lucky I was sleeping, or I would have had shark for dinner," Cordayl comments.

Every fish in the dome stops swimming as they hear this. Cordayl looks back at them. "It's just a joke," Cordayl chuckles. "There aren't even any sharks here."

Suddenly, a giant looming creature is behind him, and Cordayl can feel the vibrations on his neck as its threatening presence tickles his hair.

Turning around, Cordayl sees a giant black shark snarling at him with its giant rows of teeth.

"You must be dinner," Cordayl states, not intimidated in the least.

The shark roars in his face, scaring all sea life in the dome, inspiring them to swim away quickly. As the shark's booming roar concludes, so does Cordayl's yawn, unfazed by the smell of tuna blown in his face.

The shark, feeling disrespected, opens its jaws wide to swallow Cordayl whole, but the mermaid appears and smacks the shark and tells it that it is being very rude to her guest.

The shark pouts at the unexpected hit, and suddenly a large merman jumps from off the shark's back, and lands with a thud on the seafloor. "Relax Eursala. Shamua was only playing. Besides, your guest is an uninvited one," the merman says, sizing Cordayl up after seeing him with his own eyes.

"He isn't a guest, he's a patient. And while he is under my care, I ask that you show him the proper respect during his visit," the mermaid named Eursala defends Cordayl's stay.

"A patient? He's one funny looking fish," the merman mocks her. "Look, I was sent to remind you that Father will be here soon with his diplomat buddies. He told me to remind you to have the fleffer fish in excess, as the diplomats seem to take a liking to them most."

Eursala slaps her forehead. "Dang! I forgot that was today. He's gonna flip if he sees him down here. Eurick, please help me out. He really is down here for medical reasons. I found him floating unconscious on my day off. I had to save him." Eursala states.

Eurick opens his mouth wide as if he is about to scold his sister but lets out a simple "No."

"If you get in trouble for getting caught with this air breather, you deserve every part of your punishment," Eurick states, crossing his arms.

Eursala takes a breath to give her angry thoughts to Eurick, but she pauses as she remembers her prior task and swims away in a hurry. Quickly reaching the top of the dome, she pushes the top gently, and it slides apart quietly.

Swimming out into the open sea, Eursala throws out some colorful fish food and swims back down to the dome floor, leaving a trail of flakes behind her. Returning to the dome, Eursala straightens up the dome.

While she cleans up, Eurick and Shamua examine Cordayl like he's a puppet. "So this is a human? Rather small," Eurick observes.

Cordayl sits there in boredom as he watches four mermen in suits swim into the dome. One of the mermen, the one with a tinted monocle in his eye, swims out in front of the posse and is met by Eursala and Eurick.

"Hey, Daddy!" Eursala hugs and kisses her dad on the cheek. "Welcome guest to Atlanta's top veterinarian provider. I'm Eursala, the facilities head doctor. And this is my brother Eurick. A general of Atlanta. Please feel free to explore the facility and ask any questions that come to mind," she smiles.

Opening her eyes, she sees that only her father is present after her introduction, as everyone else has surrounded Corday.

Cordayl nervously shakes their hands and allows them to examine him like Eurick did. Then he meets the father.

"Forgive them. They aren't as traveled as I am, so this is their first encounter with a human. A pleasure to meet you," he says, shaking Cordayl's hand. "If I may ask. How did you get here?"

"Ohh uhm, Eurs-" Cordayl goes to answer before he is loudly cut off by Eurick.

"He's my sparring partner," Eurick says to his father, who has his monocle cut towards Eursala.

"Really? You ran out of competition in our water, so you had to break the rules to find a good opponent?" his father asked.

"I wouldn't say that. I uhh got a tip about a strong warrior out at sea and thought I could sneak him in for a bit." Eurick answers nervously.

"A general sneaking in outsiders? That's a first even for me." The father says.

Eursala jumps in, silently thanking her brother for trying to cover for her. "Look daddy, I found Cordayl floating unconscious on the waves. Sharks had attacked him, so I thought it would be safer to bring him down here while he recovered."

"Sharks you say? The lad looks like he just woke from a nap." The father observes as he watches Cordayl being tortured in his interview with the diplomats.

"I never said it was a successful attack," Eursala mutters as her father returns his attention to Cordayl.

"I'm sorry if I am trespassing. I'm feeling better now, so I'll leave whenever you want me to." Cordayl says, blocking a hand from touching his hair.

"Oh, don't worry about it. I'm sure between me and these gentlemen behind you, we can work out a good reason for your visit. Right, fellas?" The father asks his diplomat friends, who all quickly agree.

"You have to come see the city." One invites.

"Yes! Think of the headlines! Our first land visitor in centuries!" Another agrees.

The father smiles through all the political brainstorming. "If only these sports knew you were a Melatonin, eh? " he says, patting Cordayl on the shoulder.
