Colonel Haydn tipped his hat in salute, turned his horse, and rode off to relay the orders to the courier.

General Wilmze drew the curtains, smiled at General Ernst, the Bavarian commander seated opposite him, and said, "The Marquis of Walschstaet's army was still in Cologne yesterday; he certainly did not expect us to reach Liege this quickly."

The Marquis of Walschstaet was none other than Blucher, the Prussian general who had previously led troops to intervene in the Dutch Patriot Party's uprising. He was currently serving as the vanguard commander for the Duke of Brunswick's forces.

General Ernst nodded in agreement, "Even if the Prussian Army marches at full speed, they will encounter Colonel Muzil's blocking force at Luneburg. That gives us at least a week to deal with Liege's rebels."
