Damon pulled the blanket up to Emily's shoulders, making sure she was snug and comfortable. The dim glow of the nightlight casted a warm, peaceful aura around the sleeping child.
He watched her for a moment, a faint smile playing on his lips as he listened to her steady breathing. She looked so content, so safe, and it made something in his chest tighten as it did every time he watched her sleep.
He couldn't believe how much time had gone by already since she came into his life. His precious little girl. She was growing so fast and it made his heart ache a little even though he had and was still looking forward to all her milestones.
He brushed a stray curl from her face, then leaned down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"Goodnight, princess," he murmured before rising to his feet.
He stepped out of the room, pulling the door halfway closed behind him. His feet carried him down the hall and he found himself standing outside Jessica's door.
