"If you understand, that's okay. I'm about to leave, baby. Bye," Matteo said as he walked away. He got into a luxurious Mercedes, and his driver drove toward the gate.
Luna immediately grabbed the gown in the living room, threw it over the back of a chair, and put on the one she had kept for her disguise. She quickly went outside and waited for the gate to open as Matteo's driver pulled the car out. The moment the car left, she rushed out and sneaked away before the gatekeeper could notice.
She called the taxi driver. "Come near the gate! Come now!" she said urgently.
The taxi driver immediately drove closer. She got in and told him, "Follow that man! Follow him!" Luna shouted.
The taxi driver followed Matteo's car.
"I hope I find some evidence. I hope I find proof. Maybe I can tell him to stop this. I don't really understand what it means to be the head of a mafia, but I know it's a cruel life. I don't want him to live that kind of life. When I find out everything he has been doing, I'm going to stop him. I'll tell him I know everything. And I know he loves me, just like I love him. That's why I need him to stop," Luna said, speaking to herself.
"Madam, for the past 30 minutes, I've been following this man. Where are we going? Give me a destination. I have a family to feed. I can't just keep following someone without knowing where we're going. I'm not going to earn any money like this," the taxi driver said.
"Don't worry about that. Just follow him. Is it money you want?" Luna said, opening her purse. She took out a large sum of money and gave it to him.
The taxi driver was shocked. He knew she was rich because she came from a mansion, but he didn't expect her to be this rich. The money she gave him was enough to buy a taxi. Enough for him not to work for three months.
Tears rolled down the driver's face as he took the money. "Thank you, ma. I'll follow him for a whole week if you want. Don't worry," the taxi driver said.
"No need to cry. Just follow him," Luna said.
"No problem," the driver replied as he continued following Matteo's car.
Suddenly, Matteo's car stopped. The taxi driver immediately pulled over.
Matteo got out of the car. Luna quickly put on her sunglasses, the round hat she had bought for her disguise, and grabbed her purse, which had a newspaper inside.
She watched as he entered a restaurant.
She got out of the car and followed him into the restaurant, watching as he walked toward Lorenzo. She tried to hide her face, turning to one side as she walked.
She went behind the chair where they were sitting, pulling out the newspaper to cover her face just in case. She didn't want to leave any trace that could get her recognized. Even if Matteo saw her, he wouldn't be able to see her face and realize it was her.
"Lorenzo, how is it? I hope it's looking good," Matteo said.
"Yes, sir. The drugs we smuggled in from the other country have been shipped to Italy and are on their way. They should arrive at the usual warehouse in two or three days," Lorenzo replied.
"The drugs are worth millions. People are willing to pay millions of dollars for them, and we're going to benefit even more from this. But it won't be easy. We still have to pay off some people—like the police and other law enforcement officials—because the government works with us, and the police do too. That's why we're untouchable. Things have been going well these past few years since I took over as the head of the mafia. It hasn't been hard," Matteo said.
"Yes, it hasn't. Things have been better for me too, and I'm lucky you made me your right-hand man for the job," Lorenzo said. "Now, about the file. That's what I wanted to discuss with you."
"Yes," Matteo nodded.
"The file showed the money that was stolen from the former boss of the mafia—a very large amount. Some of the mafias are fighting to get that money, so we have to get it at all costs. The only thing we know is that it's buried underground. But we're going to have to send someone, and I've been waiting for your order, sir. Just give the order, and we'll start searching for it. Because even if you're the head, money is what fuels power in the underworld. We really need to find it," Lorenzo said.
"You're right. We have to, and we will find it. That isn't the issue," Matteo said. "The problem is, we need to be prepared. You know that when we take, there's going to be bloodshed. If we find that money, the people who worked under the former boss before I dethroned him—some of whom my men killed—are going to want it. Since they were loyal to him, they'll see it as theirs. And if I take it, it could start a war. That's why I've been hesitating," Matteo admitted.
"But that isn't the issue. Don't worry about that. We will kill anyone who gets in our way. But we still have to be prepared. You know most people don't know you are the head of the Mafia because the leader's identity must remain hidden. I'll be the one handling everything while you just oversee it. Lead me, and we'll execute this," Lorenzo said.
"But sometimes I wonder… should we really take the money? I already have enough. I have billions. Maybe I don't need it," Matteo said, pausing. "But if I leave the money and someone else takes it— even if it's just millions— they might have enough to challenge me. And I can't allow that. So we are going to take it at all costs."
"You're right. It doesn't matter if the former head's loyal dog wants it. He worked for the old boss, but that means nothing now. If he gets in our way, we will have to kill him," Lorenzo replied.
"We'll need to send more men, too," Matteo continued. "And now, I'm giving you my order. Start the operation. Search every house he owned. They say the money is buried underground— it might be in a cemetery or a graveyard. We have to check everything."
Luna was in shock. What does he mean? Why is he like this? She had never seen her husband talk this way. She had followed him because she wanted to be sure, but now she was afraid— afraid of her own husband.
I have to be strong. I have to see this through. I need to know why he joined the Mafia. We already have more than enough money. We were already rich before I even married him. So why does he want more? My life was perfect before I found out about this. If I hadn't seen those documents, I would have been happy. But now, I know he's in pain. His life is a living hell— people are after him, and he's hunting others. Killing people… this is wrong, Luna thought, trembling slightly.
"Any time you get the money or find a way to retrieve it, tell me. I want to be there when it happens. Let me know because I have to be around," Matteo said.
"Okay, I'll let you know," Lorenzo replied. Then he hesitated before adding, "But there's something else… Your wife. The last time she came to my house, she was acting strange. I don't know, but something felt off about her behavior. I just thought I should mention it. She doesn't know anything about the underground house, does she?"
Matteo let out a small chuckle. "No, she doesn't know anything about this, so don't worry. Sometimes she just gets nervous. It was her first time coming to that place— that's probably why she seemed uneasy."
Luna felt her heart drop. Not only had her husband noticed her odd behavior, but so had Lorenzo. He had even brought it up. She was relieved they hadn't figured out the truth, but the fact that they already found her suspicious made her uneasy.
