Chapter 5: Messi's Test

June 8, 2017 – Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, Indoor Facility

The echo of a ball smacking against a wall repeated in perfect rhythm. Thump. Thump. Thump.

Lionel Messi stood barefoot in the indoor training room, sweat already darkening the collar of his tee. He didn't look up when the door opened behind him.

Noah stepped inside quietly, letting the sound guide him closer. He stopped a few meters behind the captain.

"I figured you'd be the first one in."

"I always am," Messi replied without turning. "That's why I'm still here."

A beat of silence passed. Then he stopped juggling and turned, finally facing him. "So. You're really the coach now."

"I am."

"Doesn't mean I trust you yet."

"I wouldn't, either."

Messi raised an eyebrow.

"I haven't earned it," Noah said. "But I will."

They sat across from each other on a bench near the wall, the soft hum of overhead lights filling the space between questions that hadn't been asked yet.

"You've changed everything," Messi said finally. "The training. The staff rotation. Even the academy. All without saying much."

"That's because what I want can't be explained. It has to be shown."

Messi leaned forward. "So show me."

Later – Tactical Simulation Room

Noah dimmed the lights and connected his AI Tactical System tablet to the wall monitor. The projection flared to life.

SIMULATION: Champions League Final

Opponent: Bayern Munich

Season: 2019–20

Outcome: Barça wins 3–1

Messi: 2 goals, 1 assist

Formation: Asymmetric 4-3-3

Role: Free Pivot Right Channel

Messi watched in silence as the simulation ran, showing him exactly where he'd move, when he'd drift wide, when to cut inside. Everything flowed like art—but guided by science.

"You made this?"

"I lived through it."

Messi turned to him, eyes narrowed slightly. "You speak like a man who's already seen the future."

"I've seen what happens if you leave," Noah said. "I've seen what happens when they stop building for you, and start building without you. You become a passenger. A problem. A shadow."

Silence.

"But that's not how it has to go."

Messi's Flashpoint

Messi stood and walked toward the center of the room.

"You don't know what it's like," he said softly. "To carry this club every season. To feel the pressure, the weight, the hate when we lose."

"I do," Noah answered. "Because I saw what happened when you left. And I saw what happened to this club without you."

Messi turned, jaw clenched. "Then prove it."

Noah stepped forward and handed him the tablet.

"Pick any game from the next two seasons. I'll show you how to win it."

Messi didn't take it.

"I don't want tactics," he said. "I want belief. Family. That's what this club lost."

Noah nodded. "Then help me rebuild it. Be the heart. I'll give it the spine."

Training Ground – One Hour Later

Noah stood at the halfway line. Messi stood at the top of the box. No cameras. No staff. Just two men and a football.

"Alright," Noah said. "Let's talk football."

Messi passed him the ball. Noah returned it. They moved closer. One touch. Then another. Quick, sharp. Patterns forming.

Messi smiled faintly. "You play?"

"Enough to understand."

Messi picked up the ball, placed it down, and took a step back.

"Then stop talking. And defend."

He fired a dribble—low center of gravity, one step fake, quick shift left.

Noah didn't fall for it. He shadowed.

Second move—cut inside.

Noah read it. Blocked the angle. Forced him wide.

Messi paused, then laughed.

"You're not bad."

Noah straightened. "I'm better without the ball."

Final Moment

As they walked off the pitch, side by side, Messi asked quietly:

"Why are you really here?"

Noah hesitated.

"To bring this club back. Not to what it was… but to what it should've been."

Messi didn't answer immediately. Then he nodded, just once.

"I'll give you one season. Show me you're real."
