Chapter 17 - The World’s Pulse

Lucius pushed open the heavy wooden door of the city's archive, the scent of old parchment and dust greeting him like an old, silent companion. This place held more than just knowledge — it held the weight of centuries, the history of empires and kingdoms long past, and the whispered secrets of power.

He had come seeking answers.

The library was vast, silent except for the soft rustle of pages and the occasional creak of wooden beams. Rows upon rows of books and scrolls stretched before him, each a fragment of the world's complex puzzle.

Settling into a worn leather chair, Lucius pulled open a thick tome titled "The Essence of Mana and the Architecture of Power."

His eyes scanned the dense text, diagrams of glowing orbs, lines of force, and intricate runes that hinted at a language beyond ordinary understanding.

Mana — the invisible thread binding all life, the source of all magic and strength.

The book explained that every living being was born with a mana core, a latent reservoir of this energy nestled deep within the body. The core's size and purity determined how much mana one could store and how easily they could shape it into spells or physical enhancement.

Some were born with vibrant, easy-flowing mana — gifted mages and warriors capable of spectacular feats. Others, like Lucius, started with cores that were sluggish or dormant, requiring patience, nurturing, and discipline to awaken.

The fruit he had consumed was an ancient relic designed to crack open the dormant core and release the first flickers of mana. But awakening was only the beginning. To harness true power, one had to shape mana carefully — a process called shaping — bending raw energy into forms that could shield, destroy, heal, or enhance.

The text warned of those who sought to force mana too quickly, their cores shattering like glass under pressure. True strength demanded slow and steady progress.

Lucius exhaled softly. That fit him perfectly.

Beyond the personal, the book unfolded the grand tapestry of the world's political landscape.

At the top was the Empire — a sprawling realm ruled by the Emperor, whose bloodline was said to possess the purest mana core of all. The Emperor's word was law, but the Empire was vast, and control relied on a delicate balance of power.

Below the Emperor were the Kings — rulers of semi-autonomous kingdoms within the empire's borders. Kings maintained their own armies, courts, and nobles, but pledged fealty to the Emperor.

Dukes held domains within these kingdoms — minor lords overseeing smaller regions, towns, and lands. Some were loyal and just, others corrupt and ruthless, using their power to traffic in secrets and forbidden trades.

The nobles beneath the dukes were the intricate gears in this machine — knights, merchants, scholars, and spies all vying for favor and influence.

It was in these shadows that the rare and dangerous dealings thrived. The minor duke's estate Lucius had seen from the cliffs was a perfect example — a hub for illicit trade in rare beastkin, forbidden magic, and secrets best left buried.

And it was here that power whispered most dangerously.

Turning the page, Lucius found a section on the Veilborn — a legendary breed of dragons born with the ability to become completely invisible. Their scales absorbed light, their breath left no scent, and their mana signature was nearly undetectable.

Kael was one of these rare creatures.

A Veilborn dragon's gift made it an unparalleled scout or assassin. But such power came at a price — isolation, suspicion, and a dangerous loneliness.

Lucius closed the tome, feeling the weight of the world settle on his shoulders.

Magic was not simply flashy displays of power. It was a complex dance — politics and power, patience and pain, trust and betrayal.

And in this game, raw strength was never the only factor.

Slowly, deliberately, he would learn to bend the currents of mana and politics alike.

One cautious step at a time.
