Chapter 1 - Flashback back

One day, Mary was in the kitchen preparing dinner for the family, while her nine-year-old son, played outside on the porch with his toy car. Their home was modest but elegant, with a neatly mowed lawn and a large tree standing proudly in front. Atop one of its branches sat a bird's nest, home to three recently hatched nestlings.

Suddenly, a strong gust of wind shook the tree. One of the chicks was blown from the nest and tumbled to the ground, landing near the boy. It had struck a stone during the fall and was severely injured. The little bird bled profusely, shrieking in pain.

The little boy approached the chick and silently observed its suffering. Though the scene was gruesome for a child his age, he appeared disturbingly calm. His gaze shifted between the injured bird and his remote-controlled car. Without hesitation, he began driving the car over the bird, crushing it repeatedly while coldly watching its agony.

Just then, his father, Michael, arrived home from work. Frozen by the sight of his son tormenting the dying bird, he dropped his bag in shock. Startled by the sound, the boy quickly put on a scared and tearful expression. Michael rushed over, snatched the remote from his son, and turned him to face him. But his anger melted away upon seeing the boy's distressed face.

The boy hugged his father tightly and began to cry. "Daddy," he sobbed, "this birdy fell from the tree. I didn't think it would survive, so I wanted to end its pain—like our scoutmaster did in the woods. I didn't know how to kill it, so I tried using my car. People die when cars hit them. I don't understand why it's still alive. Please help him, Daddy. I did everything I could."

Holding the inconsolable boy, Michael turned the boy away from the bird and quietly ended the creature's suffering. But he peeked over his father's shoulder and watched with a chilling sense of satisfaction as the bird took its final breath.

Michael then picked up his bag and carried his son into the house. As he set him down on a chair in the living room, he returned to the lawn to bury the bird. The boy watched through the window, eyes tracking his father's every move. Then he noticed Caleb, a boy from next door, staring from his balcony. Realizing Caleb had seen everything, he made a threatening gesture, warning him to stay silent. Terrified, Caleb hurried inside and slammed his door shut.
