Chapter 1 - Rebirth

"So, I'm just going to go out on a limb here. But you're not completely Sane, are you?" It took me a couple of seconds to process the words that came out of nowhere. "Is that a pun?" I groan realizing the man was talking about my stupid act from just moments before. I was a tree remover by profession. In my last moments I decided to take a job for trimming limbs out on a bigger tree. After climbing to the top, I stepped on a branch to better position myself and found it snap below me. Normally the harness should have done its job and saved me. Unfortunately, I fell and got sent back towards the tree and headfirst into another branch I had just trimmed. The result... well let's just say I understand the agony of facing a spearman in death. "Sorry, sorry." The man spoke with an insincere smirk. "It's just some people love to take some expressions too literally in life sometimes and I can't help but have a little bit of fun with this job at their expense. Especially when some people's deaths are the literal saying of out of the frying pan and into the fire. I mean seriously imagine it now. Some dude on this planet made a giant skillet to cook for a group of people for community events. The dude trips and falls in. He gets out by crawling over the side only to fall into the fire he'd been using to cook the giant contraption. Its gruesome, but sometimes some deaths just deserve a comment."

"I see." The words coming out of my mouth before I can really think too deeply on the information overload throwing in a couple good nods for measure. "I don't suppose there is anything else you need to get off your chest before we deal with my, you know, DEATH!!!" My voice coming out in a slight crack. Death honestly hurt, and then getting made fun of for it, just seemed to get a person riled up. "Your right, again sorry about that." Placatingly the men goes behind a desk he's sitting at and pulls out a few files likely about my life as I sit across from him. Honestly, they could find more comfortable chairs for the afterlife, but maybe the flow of souls is too severe here for that or something. Putting them on the table he opens them to show me my good and 'evil' deeds throughout my life. Afterwards came the process of weighing and judging them. Saving a friend's life in my earlier years had turned out to be my biggest accomplishment and point generator.

"So, as you can see here this leaves you with a total karmic point value of 937. Since you haven't made this entire exchange a drag and you listened properly. We'll tip you an extra 3 and help round it up to 940. Of course this isn't enough to guarantee a perfect life. But you can use these points for some boons in your next one." Honestly, thinking on it, this wasn't really a bad situation now that I was calming down. I wasn't sure if this was a lot of points, but I was pretty confident that 'evil' individuals wouldn't be receiving at many benefits when they started a new life. I was way more confident that I wouldn't have to deal with truly bad people. Sure, lots of people had flaws, but truly very few people were 'bad.' "So, what all can I get with these points?"

"Well, that depends really." The entity once more entered explanatory phase. "Most people only have the privilege of maybe choosing a talent or multiple. Lots of people like to diversify their abilities since most have no clue what kind of family or life, they could end up going into. After all, just because you put all your talent into Swordsmanship doesn't mean you won't end up in an artist family." "I'm noticing a 'But' somewhere in this coming up." I couldn't help but voice the obvious.

"Well, you see. We've kind of been running low on systems to give out to people. Official multiversal systems given out by our department is run by individuals that gave up a new life for one here with us. They work as governmental bodies to our business. As you could say. What I am getting at, is that you have the chance to join this department. Obviously, you won't just be able to become whatever kind of system you think of. We got a list. If you agree to this offer, we'll let you look through the list and settle payment with you. As a 'System' from now on you'll also gain a wage in Karma. The same points you just gain in this life from any 'Heroes' you raise. So, what do you say?"

I couldn't help but smile at the idea. "Well, why would I refuse such an offer. I always preferred Tycoon games. What can I say?"
