Chapter 38 - [Chapter 38: The Day After Desire]

[Chapter 38: The Day After Desire]

The morning sun filtered through the partially drawn curtains, casting golden stripes across the room where Ryan Carter lay sprawled out beside Celeste Moreno. Her sheets were twisted, clinging to their bodies like remnants of the night before. Ryan's chest rose and fell with steady breath, the tension of the previous day thoroughly wrung from his muscles.

Celeste stirred beside him, her brow furrowed even in sleep. Her hand moved across the bed, finding the warmth of Ryan's torso. She let out a soft sigh, eyes still closed, but her body shifting closer.

Ryan cracked open an eye, feeling the pressure of her palm. "Morning, Doctor," he murmured, voice husky with sleep.

Celeste blinked herself awake. Her sharp, usually calculating gaze was softer in the morning light. For a moment, she said nothing. Then her lips curled faintly. "That was highly unprofessional."

Ryan chuckled, stretching. "Good thing I'm not one of your patients."

She turned on her side, watching him with a measured expression. "Yet I feel like I've told you more than most people I've counseled."

He met her gaze without flinching. "Guess I have that effect."

Celeste sat up, letting the sheet drop as she swung her legs off the bed. Her back was smooth, strong, and her presence even in casual nudity was commanding. Ryan watched her, not with hunger this time, but quiet appreciation. She didn't rush to cover herself. She didn't need to. She was the kind of woman who wore confidence like armor — even after being thoroughly undone.

She glanced back at him. "You can use the shower. The one in here has better water pressure."

Ryan smirked. "Generous."

He got up, still naked, and crossed the room with easy, unhurried steps. As he passed her, he leaned down and placed a kiss on her bare shoulder. She didn't stop him. But she didn't lean in, either.

He entered the bathroom, closing the door behind him. The scent of sandalwood still lingered in the air — her scent. The water hissed as it warmed, and Ryan stepped under the stream, letting it rinse away the sweat and scent of the night. His mind drifted.

He smiled. "That's going to come in handy."

When he came out, a towel slung low around his waist, Celeste was dressed again — dark jeans, a fitted white blouse, and a thin black belt. Her hair was up again, tight and neat. The transformation from vulnerable to professional was nearly instant.

"Breakfast?" she asked.

Ryan blinked. "You cook?"

"I scramble eggs. That's the extent of it. Don't read into it."

"I wasn't," he said, pulling on his t-shirt. "Much."

They ate together at her minimalist kitchen counter. The eggs were fluffy, the toast slightly burnt, but Ryan didn't complain. The silence between them wasn't awkward — more like two people trying to find the new rhythm after a shift.

Celeste sipped her coffee, observing him over the rim of the mug. "You're not the kind of man who gets attached, are you?"

Ryan paused, fork halfway to his mouth. "Depends. You trying to warn me off?"

"No," she said, setting the mug down. "Trying to see if I have to do it myself."

He met her gaze evenly. "I don't chase. But I don't disappear either."

A moment of silence. Then she nodded. "Fair enough."

Later that day, back in his own apartment, Ryan finally flopped down onto the couch. The system had been quiet for most of the day, only sending the occasional notification about stats stabilizing. His body still ached, but in the best way possible.

Ryan grinned. "So even the system needs a nap, huh?"

He leaned back, flicking on the TV for some background noise, but he wasn't really watching. His mind was elsewhere — still turning over Celeste's cool confidence, the way it had melted in his hands, and how she immediately rebuilt it the next morning.

She was different. Not because she was hard to get or icy. But because she was layered. Like a puzzle that didn't want to be solved — but still gave you a piece every time you looked closer.

A low chime followed the message. Ryan sat up.

He chuckled. "A slow game this time, huh? I can play those too."

That evening, he wandered outside, hoodie zipped up and hands in his pockets. The air was crisp, the sky painted with soft blues and pinks. As he turned the corner near the park, he heard footsteps approaching.

A familiar figure came into view — long coat, honey-blonde hair, and a bag of groceries in hand.

"Ryan?"

He blinked. "Vanessa?"

She looked surprised. Then smiled, the kind that reached her eyes. "Fancy running into you."

He took the bag from her hand without asking. "Need help with this?"

"Chivalrous today, huh?" she teased.

He laughed. "Just trying to keep my streak going."

"Wanna come up?" she asked, casually. "I just bought wine and I'm making that pasta you liked."

He gave a crooked smile. "You know I'm not saying no to that."

And just like that, the next chapter of his chaotic, desire-fueled life clicked into motion.
