Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: The Calm Before The Storm

In a world where Humans, Vampires, Werewolves and Witches and Mermaids coexist…a prophecy was spoken in whispers; "A bloodstained child of tide and spell destined to give immortal powers to those who dare wield her soul"

A witch and a mermaid needed to procreate to fulfil the prophecy. For centuries, many witches captured mermaids and laid with them but they were never able to make a child. This resulted to the killing of mermaids. The queen of the merfolks gathered her people and vanished them from the easy sight of the world. Many tried to fulfill the prophecy out of greed but to no avail. Or so they thought…..

"Mummy, mummy, look what I found!!!" The voice of a little girl of about nine years rang through the air as she ran towards her mother. Her feet covered in mud, her dress, stained with what looked like clay.

"Eloise darling, careful! Don't run or you'll fall! Slow down" her mother said trying to calm her down.

"I'm sorry mummy, I was just so excited! I found this butterfly in Mrs. Ackers garden. Can I keep her? Pleaseeee…" she said with with puppy eyes

Her mother looked down at her chuckling and said; "no my little dove, you can't keep a butterfly as a pet. Butterflies are supposed to be free to move around, caging them will only hurt them"

"Oh- I didn't know that…bye bye pretty butterfly" she said before letting it go with tears in her eyes.

"Come now Elly, we must head back home immediately. Your sister and grandparents must be waiting.

The little girl took her mothers hand and walked without a care in the world. As they walked, she noticed some villagers sneering at her mother as she didn't understand why but she was curious to know.

"Mummy, why are they looking at us like that?"

"It's nothing El, let's just go" her mother replied as she turned her neck to glare at the villagers staring. Her eyes turned dark for a moment and it held no calmness but only hatred and terror and immediately, it disappeared like it was never there.

Selma, her mother, was used to being glared at by the villagers. She was used to the terrible names they called her.

"Prostitute, Uncultured Woman, etc" she had heard all of them before.

She was a single mother of two girls; Eloise and Lillian. They were twins but looked nothing alike! Eloise was a very outspoken and caring little girl, bold in nature but a very soft heart, she was a big crybaby to say. Lilian was shy, didn't speak much but slightly mean and harsh.

The two girls were constantly being compared by the villagers and this made Lilian feel inferior, hence, her shyness.

Eloise was a very pretty little girl with long wavy ginger hair and blue eyes, her pink lips complimented her beautiful white skin.

Lilian, on the other hand had a short straight black hair and brown eyes and although she was beautiful, she wasn't as beautiful as her sister.

"Those girls can't be related. One must be a bastard" the villagers would snicker.

They usually question if Selma had an affair with another main because there was no way those two girls had the same father.

Matter of fact, no one had ever seen their father. He had abandoned them when they were five. He went to a fair and never came back. Everyone wondered what happened to him but never found out. His parents felt guilty about the situation and decided to move in with Selma and their grandkids to help them.

Selma snapped out of her daze when she saw Eloise running towards their little cottage.

"Grandma, Grandpa!!!" She screamed excitedly

"Ellyyy! My sweet girl" Her grandmother said

"Welcome back Selma, you look tired. Come my child, drop those baskets while I get you something to eat"

"Thank you so much mother" Selma said tiredly

"Lily! I caught a pretty butterfly today but mum said I couldn't bring it home, it was so colorful" little Eloise said excitedly

"Elly, you're always so energetic arent you tired" Lily said to her

"Never! A princess never gets tired"

Her grandmother chuckled and said; "Enough now girls, go wash up, it's time for dinner."

After dinner, it was getting dark outside so the two girls sat in thr door way and begged their grandmother to tell them a story.

"Okay girls, just one story…Long ago in a far away land-" grandma starred while they listened carefully.

In her room, Selma searched anxiously for something. She looked under her bed, in her drawers and then she checked her wardrobe then she saw it…an old looking wooden box. She sighed with relief, opened the box and brought out a beautiful emerald necklace, she put it in her pocket, looked outside her window and said "I'm running out of time…"

Meanwhile, grandma had just concluded her story when Eloise remembered she had to feed her cat friends.

"Eloise, don't stay out for too long, make sure you get back before it's too dark!" Her grandmother yelled as she ran with a basket in her hand.

She arrived somewhere in the quiet place of the town, halfway through a forest and whistled. Immediately, three cats ran towards her; she hugged them and laid out their food as she began to pet them and tell them all about her day.

Suddenly, she heard screaming, she turned and saw what looked like smoke coming from a fire. She ran back to the village and saw the village was in wreck.

"No…no…" she whispered.

Back in the little cottage, Selma looked outside and she sighed in shock. "Mother, Father, take Lily, go! Now!" Everyone was confused and looking for a way to escape.

"Mum, what about you?" Lilian cried

"I'll find Eloise, just go with your grandparents, I'll be fine. I love you."

Selma ran out of the cottage and tried her best to not be seen. The village was in shambles. It had been invaded by some masked men in horses who were burning down houses, killing adults and capturing children.

"Eloise, please be okay" Selma whispered to herself

Eloise had just been captured, she kicked and screamed at the man to let her go.

"Let me go! I don't know you!" then she bit him, causing him to shriek in pain as her involuntarily left her. She ran with all her strength and then she saw her mother.

"Mummyyy!!!"

Selma heard her daughter's voice and then she saw a man behind her daughter walking to hit her.

Her eyes turned a void black that no light reflected in her eyes, no mercy…and the air seemed to hold its breath. And all of a sudden, She flew and attacked the man.

Eloise gazed at this sight in horror, her mind unable to comprehend what she had just seen; her mother had just flown…she was shocked as she stared.

Selma stabbed the man and he dropped dead. Then she ran to hug her daughter.

"Eloise, honey, take this necklace and run! Never lose this necklace, run with all your might and you must survive! You are the key."

Eloise was confused. "Mummy, I don't understand"

"I know my dove, but one day you will…now go! Run and don't look back no matter what you hear"

She stared in horror as a masked man struck her mother with a sword from behind and sliced her from the heart up cutting her in half.

She screamed with tears in her eyes and she held the necklace tightly and began to run.

She ran faster than she ever thought she could, her vision blurred by tears. She ran without knowledge of where she was going. Branches whipped at her skin but she didn't stop. She couldn't.

She ran as fast as she could till she got lost in a forest and laid there to sleep as she was tired. It had been a long day for her and she needed her strength to survive.

"Mummy" she cried with tears rolling down her cheeks.

The last thing she saw was the shimmer of the emerald in the moonlight. And with that, exhaustion claimed her.
