Prologue

The rain landed in large drops on the floor as the little girl padded her little feet on the ground in the dark, running with no direction. From alleys and gutters, she found herself in a place filled with nice houses. Confusion filled her little mind and she began to walk while looking around for where she should continue running to. She had hit a dead end. Slowly, tears began to roll down her little face, she fell on her knees and began to cry. Seconds turned to minutes and minutes turned into an hour. The tears had stopped and she was sitting by the side of the road with her head hanging low. She was tired and hungry and barely remembered anything

She had run away from home. Home. She didn't even remember where that was.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps. Looking from her angle on the floor, they were shoes, shoes that looked rather odd and uncomfortable.

"Hey darling, why are you out here in the rain?" It was a woman. The little girl turned to look up on hearing the unfamiliar voice, she got up but made no attempt to reply. They stood there for a few seconds in silence until the last spoke again.

"Come with me, I'll get you something dry and warm to wear and a cup of hot chocolate, yeah?" The little girl still didn't move, she sat there watching the lady, skeptical about following a complete stranger. The lady held out her hand patiently for the girl with hopes that she'll accept the offer and come to warmth. She could find her something to eat and dry clothes while the police looked for her parents.

After waiting for almost two minutes, the girl decided to take her hand; she knew nowhere else to go anyways.
