Chapter 1 - PROLOGUE

Has Earth's night sky always been like this?

Her mind drifted as she watched the stars glitter around her. She sat at the door of her standard silver TARDIS with her legs dangling down towards the city below. London, 2019 to be precise.

As she hovered, she took care to feel all of her surroundings. Her bare feet were frozen from the chill of the cold wind and the breeze itself smelt like flowers and smoke. She had no idea what types of plants even grew on earth, just that the smell was pleasant and plant-like. Who would have thought that her first trip to earth would be so peaceful? What humans would call basic or nothing special was as precious to her. Like if humans had the chance to walk on Mars like it was normal, it was special and unique.

From the long black leather coat she wore, she pulled a sonic screwdriver from the right-side pocket. It looked shiny and brand new. She pointed down at the city and started scanning the area below.

This screwdriver had a pleasant hum to it and its purple lit shone and pulsated as it worked its magic. She always loved the aura of a purple light. Her screwdriver was nothing like the old casings she was used to which could only be described as functional and unimaginative. Hers was shaped like a mystical wooden wand with a purple-jewelled tip and veins running through its silver and mixed-colour casing. Blue, purple, pink and green all blending and reflecting from the moonlight nearby. It was as if the aurora borealis was harnessed into a metal casing and shone brightly enough to be called enchanted ice.

A beautiful device with the power to scan, alter items on a molecular level, hack and so much more in just one small case. Best intergalactic multitool around, in a manner of speaking.

As she listened, her slight smile slowly disappeared into a heavy frown. She shook the screwdriver vigorously before holding it to her ear, listening closely in disbelief.

'This can't be right. Not now' she mumbled to herself as she fiddled with its settings with the screwdriver turning on and off like a flickering lightbulb.

In a sudden jolt, she stopped moving completely. It was like she became a statue or felt something touch her and made her freeze in fear. She could feel her feet prickle, but it wasn't just the weather. The cogs turning within her mind started to click and churn. Tic-Tic-Tic-Tic. Then the realisation finally kicked in. Tock.

She jumped to her feet and stared down at the city below without breaking eye-contact. It was almost as if she was looking at a sworn enemy dead in the eye.

The wind grew stronger and it blew her long coat backwards as well as her long scarlet hair bound in its long ponytail. Her silky lavender blouse was nowhere near warm, but that fact was simply unregistrable to her right now. She remained practically locked into a death stare with the sight below. In particular, the Thames river.

'My first real trip to Earth and you're throwing a welcome party for me. I can hardly wait.'

Turning away from the city, she started dashing towards the console. I need to fix this interior someday. She'd always think this same thought every time she looked around at the standard control room for her TARDIS. Type 40. Round things and white. Nothing inspirational at all.

Her hand was just inches away from the main lever when the TARDIS briskly lurched sideways. She was violently thrown onto the hard floor.

'What the hell?' she exclaimed as she started to haul herself to her feet using the console for balance. She was nearly standing when something struck her TARDIS once again, this time throwing her over the console and flat on her back on the other side.

In the sky, the silver cylindrical TARDIS was slowly dropping downwards with every hit. Bright balls of green energy stuck the side of the time machine at timed intervals. It was clearer than ever by looking at it that it was going to fail and fall.

Instinct hit. The woman made a giant leap for the console just before the next impact but unfortunately for her, the worst one struck. It would only take one more hit to take her precious time machine down. As the TARDIS was hit, the Huntress was flung far backwards towards the door and in a flash she was gone.

The TARDIS was hit once more after she fell through the door and all she could do was watch as it started falling down, descending in the opposite direction and out of sight.

The woman was falling at an incredible speed, plummeting towards the ground. As she fell, her mind flickered back. It involuntarily started reflecting and it was the last thing she every wanted to do in her last moments. She could feel her freedom slipping from her grasp as the wind grew colder and colder and the air rapidly thickened. Her whole being was fading away like ashes in the wind.

Damn. I run away and what happens, I'm shot down in the first place I arrive. I've only just started. I was finally free...

In the eyes of her mind, a face started appearing. An old man who had changed her life a long time ago and practically killed her in the process. Then it changed another. The person she used to be and the faces that she has stolen from the universe long ago. An endless list. Endless regret and shame.

By now she'd passed through the clouds and her speed was increasing. Death was nearing and that meant regeneration.

Before she hit whatever was below, one last face appeared. Another old man, but she knew his face best of all even in such a short time. Once many, many years ago and now having reunited only a short time ago. The man who freed her from her supposed-to-be eternal mental prison. A man who everyone knew and spoke of like a god, though he is just a runner like her now. A doctor.

With an almighty splash, she hit water. The Thames river.

As her broken body started sinking, she saw something from the corner of her eye. She wanted to react but couldn't move. Her vision blurred and her mind started fading. She could feel the murky water seeping into her mouth and into her burning lungs. She was helpless until she could regenerate. Forced to watch as two glowing aqua eyes slithered towards her broken body.

Everything went black.
