Chapter 40 - Conclusion

A portion of the witch doctors were setting up static traps at the rear of the troops, while several of the more powerful witch doctors retrieved bottles and jars from their lower backs, preparing to unleash voodoo magic.

The trolls were preparing to force their way through the canyon pass, breaking through the defense lines of the two watchtowers.

Omar understood the troll language, and he heard the command of the troll leader, knowing they were preparing to fight to the death. He had to stop them.

"Infantry squad, advance!"

After saying that, he led his squad of infantry to join the opposing infantry squad, raising their shields and slowly advancing, blocking the very center of the canyon exit. The canyon pass was about two hundred meters wide, and excluding the two watchtowers on either side, the infantry squads tightly blocked the remaining space.

They would become the primary target of the troll witch doctors, and would likely suffer heavy casualties. Even so, the two squads of base infantry still fearlessly strode forward.

There were also three enormous blue creatures walking in front of the infantry formation. They were water elementals summoned by Gandalf. The nearly three-meter tall water elementals helped the infantry block many of the spears thrown by the headhunters, and continuously fired ice arrows at the main troll force.

In theory, as Gandalf's abilities improved, given time, he could summon an army of water elementals. Currently, his water elementals had a time limit, and three were already his limit.

As the two sides approached, Omar roared, "Scarlet Flame's Will, To the death!"

This was the Scarlet Flame Legion's battle cry, given by Galen to boost morale and unite the army's soul.

"Scarlet Flame's Will, To the death!"

Omar's roar caused the infantrymen around him, who were raising their shields and holding longswords, to erupt in a frenzy of shouts. Although the infantrymen were few in number, they also unleashed a powerful aura.

In the distance, on the city gate, Galen and Amor were overlooking the situation at the canyon pass from the city walls.

Amor had originally wanted to personally join the battle, but Galen stopped him. The troll ninth-order powerhouse, Rak'zan, had already been executed, and he hoped that the Scarlet Flame Legion could resolve the remaining troll forces themselves.

Today would be the Scarlet Flame Legion's first battle to take flight.

Watching the two sides about to engage in melee combat, Amor reminded, "Your Highness, the cavalry can attack now."

Galen quickly turned around and came to the other side of the city wall, issuing an order to Karol Karl, who was waiting at the city gate: "Cavalry, attack! Infantry, follow out of the city!"

With a command, the city gate quickly opened, and Karol Karl took the lead in lowering the visor on his helmet, leading the charge out of the city gate.

The two sides at the canyon pass had already clashed.

The numbers were vastly different, with the trolls outnumbering the humans by almost two to one, but the defensive formation of nearly two hundred human infantrymen was like a reef, steadfastly standing firm against the onslaught of the troll horde.

In the sky, the bullets fired by the musketeers, the spears thrown by the headhunters, and the fireballs launched by the witch doctors summoning flame totems, attacked each other's formations, and the battle situation was extremely intense.

Suddenly, a rain of ice arrows fell from the sky, landing directly in the center of the troll forces. A large area of densely packed troll headhunters were within the attack range, and a chorus of wails instantly erupted. Some were even killed by the ice rain due to the slowing effect of the freezing.

"The humans have a high-level mage!"

The elder troll noticed the damage from the ice arrow rain and exclaimed loudly. He had been shocked enough times today, but he never expected to encounter a high-level human mage here.

He quickly turned his head and looked towards the canyon pass, locking onto Gandalf's location: "In front of the watchtower on the right side of the canyon!"

"His casting distance is too far. Our spell distance isn't enough. We need to advance fifty yards!"

The witch doctors quickly made a judgment and informed their current unit commander, the acting overseer after Rak'zan's death.

The troll, whose military skills were sufficient but whose strength was insufficient and could only serve as the unit's second-in-command, immediately made a decision, dividing a squad of shield guards to lead the elder witch doctors closer to the right watchtower at the canyon pass, using voodoo magic to counter the human high-level mage.

The troll acting overseer saw that a solution had been found for the troublesome spell attack, and that the humans blocking his side had also suffered heavy casualties. The opportunity to break through was close at hand, and he quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

As a result, the acting overseer hadn't been happy for more than a few breaths before he faintly heard the sound of horses galloping in the midst of the shouts of killing. It was at least the sound of a hundred warhorses charging.

He looked back and saw that there were more than two hundred human cavalrymen charging towards his side from both sides of the canyon. A large number of human soldiers were also pouring out from the city gate behind them. Due to the hasty retreat just now, the witch doctors had only set up static traps in the center. The human cavalry charged along both sides of the valley, avoiding these static traps.

The troll acting overseer felt a burst of wailing in his heart. He felt that from the moment he entered the canyon, he had been led by the nose by the humans. More than half of his clansmen had already been killed or wounded. The stalemated battle would give the cavalry a good attacking environment, and he didn't know how many more of his clansmen's lives it would take to solve this cavalry.

What worried the acting overseer the most was whether the humans had any other tricks up their sleeves after the cavalry?

The cavalry gathered behind the trolls, forming a cone-shaped formation and fiercely piercing into the rear of the troll forces. The enormous impact force was too much for even the strong troll shield guards to withstand. Most of them spat out blood, and fell backward along with their shields.

This cavalry squad was composed of Highland citizens. The warhorses were excellent Highland warhorses purchased from several nobles' horse farms. Their powerful load-bearing capacity and Highland off-road capabilities, coupled with the strong Highland cavalry, formed a heavy cavalry squad.

Judging from the damage caused so far, the effect was excellent.

On the other side, the witch doctors, protected by a shield guard, approached the right watchtower amidst a hail of bullets and spears. The elder witch doctor, seeing Gandalf about to enter his maximum casting range, revealed a joyful smile on his ugly face: "I'm going to kill you, and then eat you. Gaa gaa gaa!"

He raised his hand and prepared to release a static trap at the feet of the Archmage, only to see Gandalf wave his hand, and another huge water elemental appeared. Then, a flash of white light appeared on his body, and he disappeared in the white light, but left the water elemental in place, launching an attack on the witch doctors.

The three water elementals that had appeared at the beginning had just been scattered by the trolls' concentrated fire. They had helped the infantry block many attacks, reducing many casualties.

The elder witch doctor watched Gandalf's disappearing figure, his laughter abruptly stopping, and he wailed:

"No!!!"

The battle situation would not shift due to the will of a certain individual, and his wail was drowned out by the fierce melee combat.

Gandalf's figure appeared behind Galen, and a fully organized squad of two hundred and forty people was already prepared.

The infantrymen in the battle were still struggling to hold on. Their numbers were already less than half, and the addition of the cavalry gave them a shot in the arm, and their morale was rekindled.

"Reinforcements are coming soon, just a little while longer. Brothers, hold on! Victory is in sight. Scarlet Flame never gives up!"

Omar swept his sword, clearing the trolls around him, and then raised his sword and roared.

These infantrymen who participated in the blocking action were soldiers from the base. They had the belief that they would fight to the death and never retreat. Even if the casualties were heavy, they still did not retreat half a step. Their belief was also where Galen's confidence in the Scarlet Flame Legion lay.

"Fight to the death and never retreat!"

I don't know how long it had passed, it seemed like a few seconds, or it seemed like a long few hours. In the midst of the infantrymen's tragic roars, the magic array on the watchtower on the left flashed, followed by a white light below. Gandalf arrived with the second squad of infantry, and they quickly ran to join the battle, reorganizing their formation.

The troll acting overseer was dumbfounded. He finally knew how the hundreds of humans in the two watchtowers had bypassed the witch doctors' sentry guards and appeared in front of him.

What a powerful group teleportation spell!

Finally, not long after Gandalf teleported over, there was movement at the canyon pass.

Reinforcements, have arrived.
