Chapter 4 - Mining

Elara stood within the command center of the fleet base in the Cygnus 0476 star system, gazing through the thick observation window at the floating asteroids surrounding her. This base was not built on the open surface of a planet but concealed deep within an asteroid belt, resembling a massive space assembly plant suspended in the void. Its exterior was composed of countless steel frames and modular structures, like a sleeping mechanical behemoth, its surface covered in mottled gray coating that blended seamlessly with the rocky asteroids. Gigantic mechanical arms extended from both sides of the base, moving with precision as if ready to assemble ships or devour resources. Faint lights flickered through cracks in the structure, casting an eerie glow amidst the sea of stars—mysterious yet brimming with power.

Upon arriving in Cygnus 0476, Elara chose to hide the base within the asteroid belt, utilizing the natural barriers for defense while staying close to abundant mineral resources. She directed engineering drones to weave through the asteroids, skillfully embedding the base's modules into rocky crevices, completing the construction of this space assembly plant. Inside the base were patrol ship production lines and combined production lines—the former dedicated to manufacturing warships, the latter capable of flexibly producing engineering vessels and support equipment. As she studied the holographic projection displaying the base's structure, a flicker of satisfaction crossed Elara's eyes—this was a hidden yet formidable fortress.

Her gaze soon shifted toward the core region of the asteroid belt, where high-purity crystal deposits lay buried, vital to the rise of the Nova Alliance. Elara decided to begin mining operations immediately. She summoned a team of X8 engineering ships, technological marvels of the Nova Alliance designed specifically for the harsh environment of the asteroid belt. Each X8 engineering ship was equipped with a drone mining system; small, agile drones efficiently penetrated mineral veins for precise extraction. They also featured reinforced protective systems to withstand meteor impacts and autonomous navigation for swift evacuation in dangerous situations.

"Activate the X8 engineering ships, target the core region of the asteroid belt," Elara commanded from the command platform, her voice calm and resolute. "Prioritize the extraction of high-purity crystals and monitor meteor activity."

"Aye, Captain!" Kiera responded swiftly, her fingers flying across the control panel. Moments later, several X8 engineering ships slowly emerged from the base's dock doors, their engines emitting a blue glow before disappearing into the shadows of the asteroids.

Elara turned to the holographic display, which showed real-time updates on the X8 engineering ships' movements. They navigated deftly between floating boulders, their drone mining systems humming audibly. Small drones launched from the ships, darting like nimble swarms of bees into asteroid fissures. Mining arms cut precisely, drawing fragments of ore into storage compartments, which were then transported back to the base. Gigantic mechanical arms extended from the sides of the space assembly plant, receiving the ore and delivering it to internal storage areas. The resource counter ticked upward, and a faint smile curved Elara's lips—this was the beginning of victory.

However, she remained vigilant. While the asteroid belt provided natural cover, it also harbored dangers—random meteor collisions and potential enemies could shatter the tranquility at any moment. Turning to Kiera, Elara ordered, "Activate the patrol ship production line. Manufacture three FG3000 Multirole Frigates and deploy them around the asteroid belt."

"Understood, Captain," Kiera replied. "The first frigate will be completed in approximately forty minutes."

Elara nodded, strategizing her defenses. The FG3000 Multirole Frigate was the Nova Alliance's mainstay warship, equipped with three SG-1500 cannons, combining mobility and firepower, making it ideal for protecting the base. She instructed setting up sensor arrays at the entrances of the asteroid belt to monitor unusual activity and directed the combined production line to manufacture defensive drones, enhancing the base's shields and cannon systems. The low, powerful hum of the patrol ship production line echoed from deep within the space assembly plant, bringing her a sense of reassurance.

As time passed, the efficiency of the X8 engineering ships increased. High-purity crystals piled up in the storage compartments, providing ample energy and materials for the base's operations. Just then, Kiera's voice rang out: "Captain, the first FG3000 Multirole Frigate is complete, and the second will roll off the line shortly."

"Excellent," Elara straightened, her tone firm. "Deploy them to patrol the edges of the asteroid belt and ensure the safety of the mining ships."

On the holographic display, three FG3000 Multirole Frigates emerged from the space assembly plant's dock doors, their sleek designs shimmering under starlight. They quickly assumed positions, turrets rotating as they scanned the surrounding void. Watching this unfold, Elara felt a surge of pride—these warships would become her swords and shields.

The combined production line also sprang into action, manufacturing a squadron of stingray-shaped defensive drones. They orbited the base, forming a flexible protective net that blended seamlessly with the rocks of the asteroid belt. Elara's gaze shifted from the holographic projection to the asteroid field outside the space assembly plant. She knew this was only the beginning. With these resources, she could construct refineries to process ore or even expand the shipyards to build a more powerful fleet. Cygnus 0476 was merely one stop on their journey; countless challenges awaited deeper in the stars.

"Captain, the sensor arrays are in place, and there are no abnormalities detected so far," Kiera reported. "Mining progress is stable, and we expect to fill the first set of storage compartments within three days."

"Continue advancing," Elara said, resolve flashing in her eyes. "Prepare for the next phase of our plan. We won't stop here."

Inside the space assembly plant, lights flickered as X8 engineering drones buzzed through the asteroid belt, and the roar of FG3000 Multirole Frigate engines echoed in the vicinity. Elara turned, gazing at the starry expanse, her heart ablaze with determination. Whether facing enemies or the unknown, she would lead the Nova Alliance to carve out their legendary chapter in the cosmos.
