Chapter 4 - Chapter 004: I Want to Live

The weather was gloomy and gusts of cool wind blew, carrying a stuffy, fishy smell in the air that made one feel somewhat oppressed.

"Looks like it is going to rain today."

"Yeah, maybe they will end exercise early today. I do not want to get soaked."

"Hmm, agreed."

The soldier spoke, took a whistle from his pocket, put it to his lips, and blew. The high-pitched, clear whistle sound echoed across the square. Hearing the whistle, the Eldians consciously walked back without the Marleyan soldiers giving orders.

And unnoticed by anyone, in a corner of the barbed wire fence, Rayan's petite figure was lying in the weeds, pulling at the wire, revealing a small hole. This hole was definitely too small for an adult to squeeze through. In fact, even Rayan had a hard time getting through it. This was also the reason it had not been discovered. If the hole had been large enough for an adult to pass through, it probably would have been noticed long ago.

He carefully used his hands to prop open the barbed wire, trying to make the hole as large as possible, and then squeezed out. After all, he did not want to get his skin scratched by the rusty wire. If that happened, he might not be killed by the Marleyan soldiers but instead by tetanus.

It took him half a minute to finally squeeze through the barbed wire, and then he quickly ran towards the nearby buildings.

Outside this barbed wire fence was actually a series of intricate passages. Even if the Eldians ran out, they would not be able to figure out the route. Once they bumped around the internment camp like headless flies, they would definitely be caught.

But Rayan, having learned from his previous experience, knew which way was correct. So he quickly ran to the back of a house at the end of a small path on the left, then poked his head out to look around.

In front of the house was an open area, and several Marleyan soldiers were walking around. Behind this open area was a tall iron gate, which was currently open.

Last time, Rayan had recklessly run straight over, and although he had made it out of the gate, he was discovered by the soldiers. Once that happened, running was useless. After all, they had vehicles, and no matter how fast you ran on two legs, you could not outrun them. So he had to think of a way to escape without being discovered.

Rayan thought, looking up. The house in front of him was the Marleyan soldiers' rest room. He pressed his ear against the wall and listened. There was no sound inside.

Hesitating for a moment, he finally made up his mind. He looked at the window less than two meters above the ground, took a few steps back, then took a running start and jumped up, grabbing the windowsill with both hands. He used all his strength to climb up and jumped into the window.

Thump

The sound of landing was a bit loud, but fortunately, no one was in the room.

He looked left and right. This was a second-floor room. Since it was a common soldier's rest room, there was not anything valuable. There was only a single bed and a table.

He opened the drawer of the cabinet. There was paper and a pen inside, but nothing more important.

He turned and left the room, heading straight for the stairs down to the first floor. He went down, and as he looked up, he saw a Marleyan military uniform hanging on a coat rack next to the door.

Great. As long as he had that as a disguise

He quickly went downstairs and walked over. Just as he raised his hand to touch the collar of the uniform, a voice suddenly sounded from behind.

"Who are you"

In an instant, goosebumps rose all over Rayan's body, but the next moment was despair. He turned around stiffly and was stunned by the person he saw.

On the single bed opposite, a little boy was rubbing his sleepy eyes, yawning. He had obviously just woken up.

No wonder he had not heard any sound outside earlier. He was sleeping

Rayan's mind raced. He had originally thought there were Marleyan soldiers in the room, thinking everything was over. But if it was just a child, it would be easier to handle.

"I am a soldier here," Rayan forced a smile, trying to make his voice sound natural.

"Soldier" The boy frowned. He looked a bit older than Rayan, probably fourteen or fifteen. "Are there soldiers this small And why were you trying to take my dad's clothes"

"Uh, that, your dad asked me to help him get them. He"

"You are not a soldier You are a devil" The boy suddenly screamed, jumped out of bed, and pointed at the black cloth clothes on Rayan. "The devils locked inside all wear these clothes"

Damn it How could he have forgotten that

Rayan's face instantly darkened. Indeed, the clothing of the Eldians locked in the internment camp was a uniform black linen, which the soldiers could recognize at a glance.

Whoosh

Rayan lunged towards the child in one step. He had already been exposed, so there was nothing more to say. He had to subdue this boy first

"Damn devil"

The boy screamed, quickly pulled open the drawer of the table beside him, and then took out a handgun

Thump thump

The moment he saw the handgun, Rayan's heart jumped. It was over

"Die, devil"

The boy's face was filled with deep hatred. He shouted and pointed the gun at Rayan, who was lunging forward. His finger pulled the trigger without any hesitation. The next second, a crisp click click sound rang out.

The boy was directly stunned, while Rayan, under the threat of death, became fiercely aggressive. He had already drawn the dagger during his rush, and now he pressed the boy down on the bed and directly raised the dagger, stabbing it into his chest.

Pu Pu Pu Pu

He stabbed several times in a row. The boy let out a high-pitched cry of pain, then Rayan covered his mouth. The following sounds were muffled groans, and then, as his pupils dilated, he finally fell silent.

Clang

The dagger fell to the ground. The ferocity in Rayan's eyes faded, and looking at his blood-soaked hands, he instantly knelt on the ground and dry-heaved.

This was the first time he had killed someone. He had no choice. If he had not done it, he would have died. He had to do it, he just had to

He glanced at the boy's body, whose eyes were still wide open. Rayan pinched his softening legs and forced himself to stand up, taking the handgun from the boy's hand.

Looking at it carefully, although he did not know much about guns, he realized that the safety was still on, which was why the bullet had not left the chamber and pierced his body when the boy pulled the trigger.

"If you had known to turn off the safety before shooting, then I would be the one lying on the ground now, would I not" Rayan murmured, looking at the boy's face. "And you would have been rewarded for killing a fleeing Eldian, becoming a young hero or something, right"

Rayan's expression turned cold and hard. Those who want to kill must also be prepared to be killed. So all of this was the boy's own fault.

If the boy had not resisted so violently, Rayan would not have killed him. Of course, he did not want to justify his killing, nor did he want to find a plausible reason to comfort himself. It was just a difference in stance. If he had to give a reason, there was only one.

"I want to live."

Rayan said firmly in a low voice, gripping the pistol tightly in his hand. He picked up a set of clothes from the wooden chair beside the bed, a boy's military uniform. Clearly, this set was a better fit for Rayan than the adult one hanging by the door.

He dressed himself. The clothes were only slightly large. He wiped the blood off his hands, tucked the pistol into his pocket, took a deep breath, turned, walked to the door, and opened it.
