Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Preparations & Tribulations

Anzari's mind was consumed by doubt as he contemplated the immense task that lay before him. How could he possibly defeat an adversary even his father, the previous Black Panther, had failed to overcome? The weight of expectation bore down on him, threatening to crush his spirit.

In the midst of his internal struggle, Anzari found himself in a secluded corner of the hidden base, engaged in intense training with the Dora Milaje. Their precise movements and unwavering discipline were meant to sharpen his skills and prepare him for the battles to come.

Anzari's voice trembled as he paused, questioning aloud, "Is it enough? Can I truly live up to the legacy of the Black Panther?"

One of the Dora Milaje, Ayo, locked eyes with Anzari, her tone steady yet compassionate. "Anzari, being the Black Panther is not just about physical prowess. It is about embodying the spirit of our people, carrying their hopes and dreams within you. Your doubts are natural, but you must find the strength to rise above them."

Her words resonated within Anzari, instilling a flicker of determination. He knew he couldn't allow doubt to paralyze him; he had to find a way to overcome it.

Meanwhile, Xavier, having returned to Shuri's side, was engrossed in strategic planning for their upcoming challenges. As they discussed their next course of action, a subtle ripple of thoughts passed through Xavier's telepathic senses. His brows furrowed, and he turned to Shuri.

"Shuri, I sense the presence of X-23 and Rogue on the other side of Wakanda. They are searching for Shay, the hospital room where our young member is being treated," Xavier conveyed, his worry for Shay still lingering.

Shuri's expression shifted, a mix of concern and urgency. "Xavier, the situation has become more complicated. We cannot risk contacting Rogue and X-23, as it could lead our enemies to the location where we are currently stationed. We must prioritize the safety of our operation and everyone here. We have to trust that X-23 and Rogue will handle the situation while we continue our preparations and search for your missing team."

Xavier nodded, his concern for Shay weighing heavily on his mind. He understood the need for caution, even as his heart longed to reach out to X-23 and Rogue, to provide them with guidance and support.

Within the hidden base, the atmosphere buzzed with activity as plans were refined and resources mobilized. The air resonated with the hum of advanced technology, the clatter of equipment being readied, and the muffled conversations of their strategists. Anzari, fueled by a newfound resolve, immersed himself in the preparations, channeling his doubts into unwavering focus.

As the sounds of purposeful activity filled the air, Anzari couldn't help but feel a connection to the events unfolding on the outskirts of Wakanda. The arrival of X-23 and Rogue, their quest to find Shay's hospital room, signified a turning point, a convergence of paths that would shape their collective destiny. And while they trusted in the capabilities of their comrades, Anzari knew that their search for Xavier's missing team held the key to their ultimate success, and a glimmer of hope for Shay's recovery.

Present Day:

As the first rays of sunlight peeked through the window, signaling the arrival of a new day, Rogue slowly stirred from her slumber. Stretching her limbs, she let out a contented sigh, momentarily forgetting the weight of their mission. Then, remembering the events of the previous day, she turned her attention to X-23, who was still curled up in her makeshift bed on Rogue's lap.

"Nudge, nudge," Rogue said, gently prodding X-23. "Time to wake up, darlin'. Can't sleep all day."

X-23 groaned softly, resisting the call to consciousness. Her body still yearned for more rest, but the urgency of their situation compelled her to rouse herself. Reluctantly, she opened her eyes, adjusting to the soft glow of the morning light.

Rogue, now standing by Shay's comatose body, turned her attention to X-23 with a warm smile. "Mornin' sugah," she greeted Shay in a soft voice, a hint of sadness lacing her words.

The hospital room, adorned with Wakandan technology and design, exuded an aura of serenity. The walls were adorned with intricate tapestries, depicting the rich history and culture of Wakanda. The sound of gentle humming filled the air, emanating from the advanced medical equipment surrounding Shay's bed.

X-23 pushed herself up from Rogue's lap, rubbing her eyes to clear away the last remnants of sleep. She glanced around the room, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings, her mind still processing the chain of events that led them here.

"Rogue," X-23 began, her voice still tinged with fatigue, "last night, when you fell asleep, I heard heavy footsteps from the floors below. I couldn't ignore it. I had to investigate." She paused, her eyes flickering with a mixture of weariness and determination.

"I followed them quietly, took out a couple of guys," X-23 continued, recounting the events. "When I searched their unconscious bodies, I found this." She held up the unusual keychain, its unique design catching the light.

Rogue's eyes narrowed as she examined the keychain more closely. "Well, now, that ain't somethin' you find just lyin' around," she remarked, a sense of unease creeping into her voice. "And you're right, darlin'. It's mighty strange that the other X-Men ain't shown up or even contacted us since we arrived."

X-23 nodded, her instincts sharpening. "Exactly. It's like we're alone in this. I can't shake the feeling that something's not right," she admitted, her voice filled with a mix of caution and curiosity.

The two mutants exchanged a meaningful look, understanding the need to proceed with caution. Their search for answers had taken an unexpected turn, and the web of mystery surrounding Shay's condition and the keychain deepened.

X-23 gazed out of the window, her keen eyes spotted a scene of panic unfolding in the streets below. A group of Jaguar soldiers held a crowd of innocent people at gunpoint, interrogating them relentlessly about the whereabouts of Xavier and Shuri. The soldiers pressed their weapons against the chests of the terrified individuals, demanding answers with a menacing air.

Rogue, hovering angrily over the hospital floor, clenched her fists, ready to intervene. But X-23, sensing the urgency yet realizing the futility of the situation, gently grabbed her arm, pulling her back. "Hold on, Rogue," she said firmly. "Jumping in now will only make things worse. These people know nothing, and the soldiers will eventually give up. We need to remain hidden and do some investigating of our own."

Rogue, her frustration evident in her voice, retorted, "But X, we stick out like a sore thumb! How are we supposed to investigate when everyone's on edge and the soldiers are running rampant?"

X-23's gaze remained focused as she explained, "We'll find a way. We'll blend in, gather information discreetly. We can't afford to draw unnecessary attention. Patience and strategy will be our allies in this."

Reluctantly, Rogue nodded, realizing the wisdom in X-23's words. Taking a deep breath, she calmed her racing emotions, a steely determination settling in her eyes. They needed to tread carefully, unseen, as they unraveled the mysteries surrounding Xavier, Shuri, and the chaos unfolding in Wakanda.

Meanwhile, down in the streets, the crowd's desperation mingled with a faint glimmer of hope. The people, unaware of the true situation, fervently refused to cooperate with the soldiers, defiantly declaring that even if they knew anything, they would never reveal it to "monsters" like them. They clung to the belief that their king, T'Challa, would come to their rescue.

The soldiers, cruel and callous, laughed at their claims, mocking them. "Your precious king is dead, fools!" one of the soldiers sneered sadistically, relishing the despair that washed over the crowd.

A surge of anger and disbelief rippled through the people, their resolve strengthening in the face of adversity. They shouted back, their voices echoing with defiance, challenging the soldiers' claims, and clinging onto hope that T'Challa was still alive.

In the midst of the heated exchange, Rogue, unable to contain her fury any longer, broke free from X-23's grip. With a burst of superhuman speed, she swooped down, her fist slamming into the ground with a resounding impact. Her voice, infused with a fiery Southern accent, boomed across the scene. "Y'all pickin' on the wrong folks, now! If it's a fight you want, you'll find I've got plenty of bite!"

The Jaguar soldiers, taken aback by Rogue's sudden display of power, sneered at her. "Foreign devil," they spat, their disdain evident.

Rogue shot back, her voice dripping with defiance, "I may be foreign, but you fellas are the devils here!" With unmatched strength and agility, she launched herself at the soldiers, a whirlwind of fury. Her fist collided with the gut of one soldier, shattering his high-tech chest plate, and sending him hurtling through the air. Swiftly, she spun, sweeping the legs of another soldier charging at her with a glowing purple plasma spear. With precision, she stomped her foot into his gut, rendering him unconscious.

As the remaining soldiers opened fire, Rogue's heightened reflexes allowed her to evade the hail of bullets, twisting and turning with acrobatic finesse. Amidst the chaos, X-23 stealthily maneuvered behind the gunmen, silently closing the distance. In one swift motion, she brought their heads together with a resounding crack, rendering them unconscious.

The crowd erupted in cheers, their faces etched with gratitude and newfound hope. "Thank you! Thank you!" they cried, their voices a chorus of relief.

X-23, a hint of a smirk on her face, quipped to Rogue, "So much for staying hidden."

Rogue's lips curled into a wry smile as she looked at the woman who had stepped forth from the crowd with confidence. "Guess we can't always follow the plan," she replied, her Southern drawl lacing her words. "Lead the way, ma'am."

The woman, her eyes sparkling with determination, introduced herself as Nakia, a loyal Wakandan citizen. "We've been waiting for someone like you," she said, her voice filled with gratitude. "Please, follow me. I can guide you to a safe place where we can talk in private."

Rogue and X-23 exchanged glances, a silent agreement passing between them. They followed Nakia through the winding streets of Wakanda, blending in with the bustling activity as best they could. Along the way, the people they passed watched them with a mix of awe and curiosity. Some whispered words of encouragement, while others nodded in acknowledgment, grateful for their act of defiance against the soldiers.

Finally, Nakia led them to a hidden underground chamber, shielded from prying eyes. As they settled in, Nakia spoke earnestly, her voice filled with urgency. "I've been part of a resistance group that seeks to protect Wakanda from within," she revealed. "We've been monitoring the increased activities of those soldiers, who call themselves the Jaguar Elite Guard. They've become ruthless and cruel since King T'Challa's disappearance."

Rogue's eyes narrowed, her voice edged with determination. "We're here to find our friend, Xavier, and Shuri. They're in danger, and we believe there's a connection between Xavier's disappearance and the chaos in Wakanda."

Nakia nodded, her expression grave. "We suspected as much. T'Challa had been investigating a hidden faction within our nation, plotting to seize power and disrupt the balance. But he vanished before he could expose them."

X-23's keen senses picked up a faint sound, like the echo of footsteps approaching the chamber. She tensed, ready to react.

Nakia, too, noticed the disturbance. "We must hurry," she urged. "But first, we need to uncover the truth behind the Jaguar Elite Guard and their true allegiance."

Rogue, her eyes gleaming with determination, clenched her fists. "We'll help you. We've faced our fair share of villains, and we ain't afraid to take 'em down."

Nakia smiled, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. "With your strength and our knowledge of Wakanda, we have a fighting chance," she said, her voice resolute. "Together, we will bring light to the darkness that has befallen our nation and rescue Xavier and Shuri."

Nakia led X-23 and Rogue away from the cheering crowd, their steps quick and purposeful, they entered a narrow alleyway where Nakia retrieved two duffle bags from a hidden compartment. With a swift motion, she tossed them to X-23 and Rogue, a confident smile gracing her lips.

"I'm pretty sure I got your measurements right," Nakia remarked, her voice tinged with amusement. The duffle bags contained elegant Wakandan religious outfits, adorned with a regal purple and black color scheme, reminiscent of the majestic panther aesthetic. The outfits were designed to cover their faces, ensuring their anonymity as they moved through the city.

X-23 and Rogue wasted no time, swiftly donning the outfits, their movements efficient and practiced. Once dressed, they merged into the bustling streets, their identities concealed behind the intricate masks.

As they walked quickly through the backstreets of Wakanda, Nakia shared what little information she had about the disappearance of the X-Men. "We were told that the X-Men were seeking a hermit scientist to help with your fallen comrade shay deep in the Mystic Jungle of Wakanda," she began, her voice laced with uncertainty. "But there is a peculiar connection between their disappearance and the sudden appearance of the Jaguar soldiers."

X-23, her sharp eyes focused on Nakia, contemplated the possible link between the X-Men and the Jaguar soldiers. "It seems too coincidental," she mused. "The timing suggests there might be more to this than meets the eye. We need to uncover the truth."

Nakia nodded in agreement, her expression determined. "The motives of the Jaguar soldiers remain unknown to me," she admitted. "But what I can tell you is that they are Wakandan, which makes this situation even more troubling. We must proceed with caution."

Their path led them deeper into the labyrinthine streets, away from prying eyes and the reach of the Jaguar soldiers. Nakia's knowledge was limited but few knew the backstreets of Wakanda better than her

And that was the expertise they needed now.

As Rogue ran alongside Nakia and X-23, getting accustomed to her new Wakandan outfit, her mind couldn't help but drift back to her comatose friend Shay. Her feelings for him were a jumbled mess, a blend of worry, guilt, and an inexplicable longing. She shook herself out of her thoughts, reminding herself that she needed to focus on the task at hand. There would be no helping Shay if she couldn't find and rescue their comrades, and perhaps even save the entire country of Wakanda. She never thought she'd yearn for the days of mundane math classes back in Bayville, but right now, she'd gladly endure long division for hours rather than deal with this perilous situation.

Interrupting the ongoing conversation between X-23 and Nakia about the current state of affairs in Wakanda, Rogue spoke up, her voice filled with concern. "But what about Shay? Who's gonna look after him while we're off tryin' to save the day?" Her worry for her comatose friend was evident in her tone.

Nakia smiled reassuringly, her eyes filled with determination. "Don't worry, Rogue. I'm way ahead of you," she responded. "I've sent my allies to stealthily move Shay to a safe house for now. He'll be protected and cared for until we return."

Rogue felt a wave of relief wash over her, grateful that Shay was in capable hands. She trusted Nakia's judgment and knew that she would do everything in her power to ensure their friend's well-being. With a renewed sense of purpose, Rogue focused her attention on the task ahead, ready to confront whatever challenges awaited them in their mission to find their missing comrades and unravel the mysteries that plagued Wakanda.

As they continued their brisk pace through the labyrinthine streets of Wakanda, Rogue couldn't help but feel a surge of determination coursing through her veins. The fate of her friends and the destiny of a nation now rested on their shoulders.
