Chapter 10 - **Chapter 10: Awakening and Discovery**

Chi Yan's voice had just fallen when, without waiting for Qingxuan's reply, she abruptly vanished from the mirror's surface. A few breaths later, the door to the Enlightenment Chamber silently swung open. When Qingxuan caught sight of the familiar figure in a fur robe standing outside, her restless heart finally settled a little.

Chi Yan strode into the Enlightenment Chamber with a grave expression, and the door closed automatically behind her. She formed a hand seal and pointed at Qingyun. His body seemed to be lifted by an invisible hand, slowly rising from Qingxuan's embrace to float before Chi Yan.

"Tell me everything that happened," Chi Yan said in a deep voice.

Qingxuan immediately recounted the entire sequence of events to Chi Yan: from lighting the Enlightenment Incense, to Qingyun's abnormal condition, and finally to her extinguishing the incense. She left nothing out.

After a long while, Chi Yan, who had been examining Qingyun repeatedly, could find no irregularities in his now-calm form. She frowned in thought, considering whether to relight the Enlightenment Incense to investigate further, but she hesitated, unable to decide. At last, she sighed and said, "I will take him back to his residence first."

With that, Chi Yan gathered Qingyun's floating body into her arms, turned, and walked out. The door to the Enlightenment Chamber opened again as she approached. Stepping outside, she took one stride and appeared in the main hall of the Enlightenment Pavilion. With another step, she vanished entirely.

In just a few strides, she reached Qingyun's solitary courtyard. Chi Yan laid his body on the bed, pulled the quilt up to his chest, and fed him a brown pill. Then, she gazed at him thoughtfully. Some time later, Qingxuan arrived, slightly out of breath.

"After checking multiple times, it seems Qingyun has merely overexerted himself in cultivation," Chi Yan said without turning around. "His body couldn't keep up with the speed at which he was absorbing yuan energy, which led to his coma. If nothing unexpected occurs, he should awaken soon. However, as you mentioned, there was a hidden force stirring within him. That, I could not detect."

The room fell silent as both master and disciple sank into their own thoughts.

After a moment, Qingxuan pursed her lips, recalling the spark in Qingyun's eyes when she had taught him about cultivation. Unable to hold back, she asked, "Given Junior Brother's condition, can he still continue practicing the Kunwu Technique?"

Chi Yan crossed her arms, her brows tightly knit, her expression serious. She gave no answer. Qingxuan waited quietly, not pressing her, knowing full well that her master's primary concern was the sect leader's safety.

"Forget it," Chi Yan finally said, shaking her head. She turned and left, leaving the long-handled broadsword in the outer room untouched.

Qingxuan looked at Qingyun on the bed with worry, her hands tucked into her sleeves, unconsciously twisting together, betraying the complexity of her inner thoughts.

Before Qingyun lost consciousness, his mind had grown hazy, overwhelmed by a wave of heat. Unable to resist, he slipped into darkness. When the discomfort faded, he opened his eyes to find himself among the clouds.

"Where am I?" Qingyun wondered.

Just as he was about to look around and make sense of his surroundings, he heard the clanking of chains colliding behind him. Curious, he turned toward the sound and saw a disheveled yet muscular figure, his body pierced and bound by countless chains. Arcs of light occasionally flashed along the chains, especially the two that ran through his shoulder blades, which shimmered with dazzling electric brilliance.

"Who are you!" Qingyun exclaimed, startled by the horrifying sight.

The figure seemed to hear his cry and slowly raised his head. Through strands of hanging black hair, Qingyun saw a pair of eyes glowing with blazing white light. In an instant, two piercing beams shot forth, engulfing his entire vision.

"Ah!" Feeling as though the light would pierce through him, Qingyun let out a scream.

He jolted awake on the bed, instinctively propping himself up. Large beads of sweat slid down his forehead; his face and body were drenched, leaving him sticky and uncomfortable.

"Junior Brother!" A joyful voice called from beside him. As Qingyun came to his senses, he met a pair of eyes brimming with delight.

Qingyun froze, his mind grappling with a single question: Why is Senior Sister in my room?

Like a gust of wind, Qingxuan swept to his bedside. Her fragrance hit him, and the unexpected situation stalled his thoughts. Glancing over his dazed expression and slightly parted lips, Qingxuan reached out without hesitation, lifting his chin with her slender hand to examine him closely.

Seeing Qingyun looking as though he'd lost his soul, pliant under her touch, Qingxuan swallowed and muttered, "Is he dazed silly?"

Her words snapped Qingyun back to reality. He quickly pulled away from her hand, retreated to the far side of the bed, and clutched the quilt with both hands. "Senior Sister, w-why are you in my room?"

Qingxuan blinked, then, noticing his awkward expression, couldn't help but curl her lips into a smile. "Junior Brother, have you forgotten that you fainted in the Enlightenment Chamber? How else would I end up in your room? Or do you think I'm here coveting your charming figure?" She doubled over with laughter, barely catching her breath.

Qingyun's face stiffened as memories of the Enlightenment Chamber flooded back. He subtly released the quilt and forced an awkward smile. "D-did Senior Sister bring me back? How long was I unconscious?"

His face burned, hoping to shift her attention.

"Not long, just a day," Qingxuan replied, straightening up and stifling her amusement with a casual tone.

"That long?" Qingyun gasped, shocked.

"What did you expect? You overexerted yourself in cultivation. If not for Master's pill, you wouldn't have recovered so quickly," Qingxuan said, raising an eyebrow.

"Senior Sister, about the Kunwu Technique…" Qingyun asked hesitantly, now vaguely aware that what had happened wasn't a normal part of cultivation.

"Master said to stop practicing it for now," Qingxuan replied after a brief pause.

"But—" Thinking of the looming danger to his emotional roots, Qingyun opened his mouth to argue for a chance to continue.

Qingxuan cut him off. "Don't worry. I'll keep teaching you cultivation knowledge so you can continue meditating and observing yuan. With proper meditation, you might avoid the issues from the Enlightenment Chamber."

Qingyun's lips moved, wanting to press further, but the thought of Senior Sister continuing to guide him silenced him. Maybe this isn't so bad, he thought. Then he startled himself—why did he feel a secret thrill at her company, even to the point of letting go of the Kunwu Technique?

With mixed emotions, he stole a few glances at Qingxuan, as if trying to decipher his true feelings from her lovely face. Sitting on the bed, he bowed slightly. "Thank you, Senior Sister."

Seeing his solemn look, Qingxuan assumed he was fretting over his cultivation. "I checked your body earlier," she said. "You've mostly recovered. Thanks to Master's pill, you're even stronger than before."

Thinking she was explaining his condition, Qingyun was about to thank her again when she stopped him, her eyes twinkling mischievously. "So, since you're fine, want me to sneak you out for some fun?"

"Down the mountain?" Qingyun blinked, caught off guard.

"Yes, how about the nearest city to the Five Elements Sect—Golden Radiance City?"

Soon, Qingxuan cast a cleansing spell on Qingyun, had him change clothes, and took him to Golden Radiance City.

To Qingyun's surprise, a special flying wind tunnel connected the city to the sect. Qingxuan explained that since many young disciples lived on Qingmu Peak and needed to venture out—but couldn't fly freely below—a previous master had used the power of the Dao to create this tunnel beside the peak for quick travel.

After experiencing the tunnel—more thrilling than flying with his Senior Sister—Qingyun emptied his stomach's acid onto the land outside the city.

"Junior Brother is so generous, not even sparing the flowers and grass," Qingxuan teased, squatting beside him as he retched, patting his back.

"Senior Sister—ugh—" The tunnel was long, and midway, his stomach had churned, but Qingxuan's finger had sealed his mouth. Only after landing did she release the spell.

This time, she hadn't meant to tease him; the tunnel was simply faster than her flight. She'd even cast a wind-protection spell to shield him from the high-speed winds. Still, her playful nature shone through as she smiled at his dry heaving.

Once his stomach settled, she had him cup his hands, conjuring water for him to rinse his mouth. After he freshened up, she showed their sect tokens to the guards, bypassing the queue and inspections to enter the city directly.

Inside, the streets bustled with people and carriages. Tall buildings lined the roads, their windows, pillars, and eaves adorned with intricate carvings—grand and magnificent.

Qingyun, who had never seen such a prosperous city, was dumbfounded, following his Senior Sister in a daze. When he came to, they were at the head of a long bridge spanning a vast, shimmering lake.

The lake stretched hundreds of meters to either side, its surface mirror-like. Lush greenery and fragrant orchids lined the banks, with stone paths and houses where pedestrians strolled.

"Isn't Lake Pingbo beautiful?" Qingxuan's voice floated from ahead.

Before he could answer, she continued, "This lake covers about one-tenth of Golden Radiance City. At dusk, golden carp leap in unison, their scales reflecting the sunset, creating a spectacle of swirling gold. It's one of the city's wonders—'Golden Carp Leap in Emerald Lake, Radiance Too Bright to Behold'—and the origin of the city's name."

"Golden carp?" Qingyun muttered, baffled. In his village, he'd only seen pond fish, never heard of golden carp.

At the bridge's midpoint, tall pillars bore inscriptions: "One Bridge Soars Over Pingbo, Dividing the Lake North and South."

Qingxuan pointed to the words, smiling back at him. "This is the Lake-Splitting Bridge."

She explained, "When the city was founded, traveling from east to west required a day's detour around the lake. A Taoist ancestor from our sect decided to build this bridge, dividing Pingbo Lake into North and South."

Qingyun nodded, understanding why the bridge was so long—only a Taoist could construct such a marvel.

Mid-bridge stood a pavilion, similar to one he'd seen earlier. Qingxuan gestured to it. "Look, that's the Setting Sun Pavilion. Legend says an Immortal once wreaked havoc in Pingbo Lake. A Taoist, hearing of it, posed as an old fisherman in the lake's heart and subdued the Immortal there. That Taoist was our sect's founder, Master Xieyang. When a later ancestor built the bridge to this spot, he erected the pavilion in honor of Master Xieyang."

"So, the Immortal is still sealed under the pavilion?" Qingyun asked, astonished.

Qingxuan nodded. "Supposedly, yes."

They strolled along, Qingxuan narrating the sights, until they neared the bridge's end. There, Qingyun spotted a tall tower to the north, carved with auspicious dragons and clouds, seven stories high with six sides, seemingly made of stone.

As if reading his mind, Qingxuan spoke just as his gaze landed on it. "See that seven-story tower? It's called the Common People's Tower, set up by the dynasty for quick communication with the Five Elements Sect. If you ever need to contact the sect urgently, you can go there. And, secretly, they deal in intelligence too. Show your sect token inside, and someone will assist you."

This uncanny timing made Qingyun's heart skip a beat, a strange emotion welling up. He nodded absently, sneaking glances at Qingxuan.

Off the bridge, the scene shifted again. Stalls and shops lined the streets, vendors hawking their wares—books, antiques, cosmetics, jewelry, fabrics, hats, shoes, jade belts, fruits, meats, toys, snacks. Qingyun's eyes darted everywhere, overwhelmed.

Qingxuan, familiar with the area, led him forward, eagerly browsing and explaining the city's specialties and delicacies.

As she chattered excitedly and he nodded along, they passed a narrow alley where an old man was being harassed by thugs.

Qingyun's brow furrowed, ready to intervene, but Qingxuan shot him a look and pulled him away.

Around the corner, he couldn't help asking, "Senior Sister, those men…"

Qingxuan rolled her eyes, exasperated. "Let's not ruin their plans. Besides, we can't afford to provoke that one."

"Senior Sister?" Qingyun asked, confused.

She explained, "That old man is a cultivator. You haven't entered the Dao, so you can't see it, but behind his head, there are words formed by yuan."

"What words?" Qingyun pressed, puzzled.

"I think he's testing a potential disciple," she said. "He's disguised as an abused elder to see how his chosen one reacts. Behind his head, it says, 'This humble monk is accepting a disciple; do not interfere.' Eight big characters. A cultivator who can do that isn't simple."

Unbeknownst to them, as they walked away, the old man on the ground—half-heartedly shielding himself while wailing for mercy—stared after Qingyun. "The seal is loosening," he murmured. "Is Brother Daoist making his move?"
