Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 – The Trial of Echoes

The floating arena was unlike anything Raka had ever seen. Silver rings of energy hovered in midair, casting shadows on the ground below. The platform they stood on was vast, stretching out in all directions, bordered by a chasm of shimmering void that seemed to swallow up any trace of light. Below them, twisted echoes of warriors past floated in the abyss — specters of failed challengers, each one wearing the expression of defeat.

Aurelius had vanished, leaving them alone in the center of the arena, the oppressive silence broken only by the eerie hum of the energy rings around them.

"This place..." Iqiww muttered, eyes darting around the arena. "Feels like we're in some kind of twisted memory."

Raka nodded, his grip tightening around his energy blade. "A test, I think. And I've got a feeling this one's gonna hit a little closer to home."

Suddenly, the holographic sky above them flickered, and a massive rift appeared — a tear in the fabric of space and time. From it, dark figures emerged, one by one, walking out of the void like shadows given form.

Raka's stomach churned.

"These aren't just any enemies," he said quietly. "They're... us."

---

The figures that appeared before them were disturbingly familiar.

They were doppelgängers, reflections of Raka and Iqiww — but twisted, distorted versions of themselves. Each one had the same weapons, the same armor, but their eyes were empty, their movements jerky and unnatural.

One of the doppelgängers — the version of Raka — raised its energy blade and pointed it at him. "You think you're different?" it sneered, its voice distorted. "You're just like me. You'll never escape the truth of who you really are."

Raka's heart pounded in his chest. These weren't just enemies.

They were the echoes of their past, the darkness they both feared was lurking inside them. The part of them that had never truly confronted their own weaknesses, their doubts, their insecurities.

"You don't scare me," Raka spat, stepping forward. "You're just a reflection."

The doppelgänger grinned, a sickening expression, before charging at Raka with a speed that was almost impossible to follow. The fight was on.

---

Iqiww, meanwhile, faced his own twisted reflection — a version of himself wearing a cracked and broken helmet, his sword slick with a black, oily substance.

The Iqiww doppelgänger swung his greatsword at Iqiww, the blow coming down with such force that the ground cracked beneath their feet.

"Is that what you think of yourself?" The voice was distorted, but Iqiww could hear the venom in it. "A simple warrior? Nothing more?"

Iqiww blocked the strike with his own sword, but the force of it pushed him back, causing his feet to slide across the ground. "Shut up," he growled, eyes narrowing. "You don't get to define me."

---

Raka and Iqiww fought with everything they had, their movements becoming fluid as they battled against their own shadows. The doppelgängers were powerful, but they were more than just opponents. They were reflections of their worst fears — the parts of themselves they hadn't come to terms with.

With each strike, Raka could feel the weight of his own insecurities pressing down on him. The fear that he wasn't strong enough. The doubt that he wasn't meant for this. Every blow from the twisted version of himself seemed to echo his own inner voice, mocking his every move.

But with every hit, he pushed back harder, fighting not just for survival, but for the truth of who he was becoming. He wasn't just a reflection of his past. He was something more.

---

Iqiww, on the other hand, could feel the weight of his own self-doubt creeping in. His doppelgänger wasn't just a twisted version of his body; it was the version of himself that had always questioned his worth. The part of him that had doubted whether he could ever be more than a fighter.

But as the battle raged on, Iqiww began to realize something. The doppelgänger couldn't hurt him, because he had already faced these doubts. He had already defeated the voices in his head that said he wasn't enough.

With a battle cry, Iqiww swung his sword with all his might, slicing through the dark figure in front of him.

The doppelgänger shattered into a thousand shards of dark energy, dissipating into the void.

---

Raka wasn't far behind. As he faced his twisted self, he dug deep, forcing himself to confront his own inner demons. The reflection of himself swung its blade in a final, desperate attempt to defeat him. But Raka was no longer fighting against a shadow. He was fighting for who he was becoming.

With a roar, he disarmed his doppelgänger, slamming the energy blade into the ground, before stepping forward and shattering his reflection's form with a single strike.

---

As the last of the echoes disappeared, the arena fell silent.

Raka and Iqiww stood in the center of the now-empty arena, panting, their hearts racing. The echoes of their past had been defeated, but the battle had left its mark.

---

Aurelius's voice echoed once again.

"Impressive. You have both passed the Trial of Echoes. But remember this — Genesis Arena is more than just a place of tests. It is a place of choice. Every decision you make here will shape who you become. What will you choose?"

---

Raka exchanged a glance with Iqiww, the weight of the words settling in.

"I think," Raka said, breathing heavily, "we're ready for whatever comes next."

And together, they stepped forward, ready to face whatever Genesis Arena had in store for them.
