Chapter 6 - [6] Signals

"My destiny huh." Tengen muttered, striding purposefully through Konoha's streets.

He was on the move because the system's map had pinged another receivable signal fragment. Naturally, he'd set out to claim it.

It was just an ordinary signal, but after yesterday's ordinary fragment yielded an Elite Genin Experience Pack, Tengen was eager to see what this one might hold.

"It's near Konoha's edge though." he thought as he walked. With his new elite genin strength, his pace was swift.

His chakra control had reached a refined level.

The extracted abilities came fully mastered, bypassing the need for gradual learning.

"This looks like the Uchiha's secret meeting spot." Tengen noted, spotting a fan-shaped emblem overhead. If he wasn't mistaken, this was the Naka Shrine, home to a basement with a stone tablet left by the Sage of the Six Paths.

"Good thing the signal's not inside the shrine, or I'd have to give up." Tengen said, sensing the signal a few meters from the entrance. Entering the shrine was out of the question, it was guarded by Uchiha clansmen.

If he barged in, he'd be killed before he could cry for help, despite his ability to spar with average chunin.

Uchiha jounin were surely stationed here.

Tengen steadied himself, pretending to be a lost kid, glancing around curiously. The Uchiha inside the shrine tensed briefly but relaxed upon seeing he was just a child.

Tengen avoided rousing their suspicion, stopping short of the shrine. He felt the signal being received.

He exhaled in relief.

Time ticked by. As the system completed the reception, Tengen sighed, ready to leave.

This place was nerve-wracking.

"Kid, what are you doing here?" A calm voice called out.

Tengen turned to see several ninjas in Uchiha garb behind him, likely heading into the shrine when they spotted him.

"Uh, I got lost on life's journey." Tengen said quickly.

The lead man blinked, bemused by the 'life's journey' bit, then shook his head. "Lost, huh? Shisui, escort this kid back. He's probably from the village. Catch up after, alright?"

"Yes, sir." A boy named Shisui nodded.

"Kid." Shisui said to Tengen.

"Tengen." He replied promptly.

"Alright, Tengen, where do you live? I'll take you home." Shisui offered.

"No need to trouble you, Shisui-san." Tengen said, putting on a cute act.

"It's fine." Shisui said, leading Tengen away. "And just call me Shisui-nii."

"Shisui-nii." Tengen echoed, leaning into the cute routine.

As Tengen and Shisui left, the lead man eyed the Naka Shrine and waved. "Let's go in."

"Yes, patriarch." The other Uchihas followed closely.

...

In Konoha's bustling district.

"Shisui-nii, this is far enough. It's close to the Academy." Tengen said.

"Alright, I'm off then." Shisui nodded. With a flicker, he vanished.

"Insane speed." Tengen's eyes narrowed. Even with his elite genin strength, he could tell Shisui was at least chunin-level.

"But what's this ordinary fragment?" Tengen's curiosity itched. Glancing around, he slipped into a deserted alley.

He opened the video and nearly spat blood. The title read, Jav Standard Video.

"What the hell, System? Have you no shame?" Tengen flipped it off, scorning the system for picking up such a modern risqué video.

[Host, signal reception can yield any video. Sometimes, these can contain valuable rewards.]

"Valuable rewards from this?" Tengen scoffed. He'd seen enough of these to be jaded. The lead actress was questionable, and the video was blurry to boot.

"Fine, extract it." Tengen sighed. He didn't want to waste it, but keeping this video in the system would be mortifying.

[Ding! Extraction successful. Obtained Premium Book Collection.]

The system voice chimed. A flash of light revealed a stack of thick, modern books before him.

"Hm?" Tengen stared at the covers, dumbfounded. "Premium collection my ass."

He picked up a few, his disbelief growing. "These are just dirty magazines! Premium books? Full-color dirty mags!"

"System, get out here! Let's fight for real!" Tengen roared.

[Extraction rewards depend on luck.]

"Damn it, are you saying my luck's trash?" Tengen fumed, itching to brawl if the system had a physical form.

"Tengen! Found you!" A boisterous laugh rang out. A figure dropped from the sky, landing with a gust that sent Tengen's hair flying.

"Pervy Sage." Tengen groaned, feeling like he'd never clear his name. Jiraiya's eyes locked onto the stack of books at Tengen's feet, gleaming with predatory delight.

"Jackpot! Absolute jackpot! Where'd you get these, Tengen? You're truly a man of culture, big bro didn't misjudge you!" Jiraiya pounced, snatching a book and flipping through it.

"So, lend these to big bro, yeah?" Jiraiya grabbed the entire stack and vanished in a flash.

"Tengen, don't worry, I'll return them!" His voice echoed.

"Pervy Sage, too much of that'll ruin you!" Tengen called out casually.

Jiraiya's retreat only sped up.

"Whatever. I'm too young for that stuff anyway. Back to the Academy." Tengen shook his head.

He was now convinced, ordinary fragments rarely yielded anything good.
