Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

Under the silver glow of the moon, Liam walked Diane through the quiet pathways of Arcadia's garden, the air thick with the scent of night-blooming jasmine and the weight of unshed words. She had sought him out, her usual poise replaced with a turmoil of emotions he struggled to understand. He could feel her tension, her gaze darting nervously to the shadows cast by the marble statues.

"It's just us, Diane," Liam murmured, his hand resting gently on her back. She flinched, then leaned into the touch, a shuddering breath escaping her.

"Not tonight, Liam," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the rustling leaves. "Tonight, the garden feels... tainted."

A prickling at the back of his neck made him turn, his eyes scanning the darkness. Something moved in the shadows, a flash of dark hair and cold eyes. Lloyd, the mysterious student who kept to himself, was watching them. A chill ran down Liam's spine, a sense of unease washing over him.

Diane followed his gaze, her face paling. "We should... we should go," she stammered, her usual composure rattled.

"Diane, what's wrong?" Liam asked, concern etched in his voice. She hesitated, her gaze flickering between him and the shadows where Lloyd lurked.

"It's not important," she finally said, pasting a smile on her face. "Just an old ghost haunting my past."

But Liam could see through the façade, the tremble in her hands, the fear in her eyes. He tugged her into a secluded alcove behind a thicket of hydrangeas, out of Lloyd's sight. "Tell me," he pressed, his voice soft yet firm. "Please."

Diane looked at him, her eyes wide and vulnerable. She took a deep breath, her fingers playing with the edge of her gossamer dress. "Lloyd... he's not who he seems. He's obsessed with me, Liam. With controlling me. He's been following me, watching me... threatening those I care about."

Liam felt a surge of anger, protective and fierce. He pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her. "He won't hurt you, Diane. I won't let him."

Diane let out a shaky laugh, her body melting into his. "You can't promise that, Liam. Not in this world."

Liam silenced her with a kiss, a tender, passionate promise. It was meant to reassure, to comfort. But as their lips moved in synchronization, as Diane's fingers tangled in his hair, the kiss deepened, burning with a desire neither could ignore. The garden seemed to fade away, the darkness receding, leaving only the two of them, their hearts pounding in sync.

Vivian, walking along the moonlit path, stopped in her tracks, her heart shattering like glass. She watched as Liam's hands roamed Diane's body, as Diane's back arched into his touch. She watched as they lost themselves in each other, oblivious to the world around them. Tears streamed down her face, her heart aching with a pain she'd never known.

She'd been foolish to trust, to believe in Liam. She'd seen the tension between him and Diane, the underlying current of something more. Yet, she'd choosing to ignore it, believing in Liam's words, in the connection they shared. Now, her heart shredded into pieces, she realized she'd been playback, a fool.

With a silent sob, she turned, leaving the garden and the nightmare it held behind. She wouldn't cry, wouldn't make a scene. She'd hold her head high, like the dignified lady she was. But she'd never forget the sight of Liam and Diane together, their bodies entwined, their hearts beating as one. And she'd never forgive Liam for breaking hers.
