'Twilight news'- 'Revolution! Airborg is dead.'
'Inferno Review'- 'Mordon Destroyer did it again. The invincible Airborg is finally gone.'
'The Victory'- 'Who is next, Tornador? Ghostmaster? Maybe baron Phaulin himself!'
I wonder if she saw any of those newspapers. Right now however was not the time to ask (if there ever was such a time). Metsuhai gestured with his arm. Chizue silently nodded. A moment later they dispersed fast, going around a wide grey building. Metsuhai made his way from the right and Chizue from the left. The goblins didn't even know what hit them. It took less than a minute for the couple to meet, their swords dripping with fresh blood.
Chizue smiled. "Well that's that for the goblins."
"Yeah, but I am still sure there's something else here." Chizue didn't argue. After all, as soon as they arrived to this small forgotten town Metsuhai mentioned the goblins (which both of them came here to get rid of) and another stronger presence he couldn't quite pinpoint. She trusted his senses and the two remained on guard while they chatted.
One moment it's here, another moment it's there, Thought Metsuhai, This guy is definitely trying to interfere with my sensing ability. Well, we are still closing the distance gradually, so I don't even have to use the Sorcerer's Eye. The villagers who are still alive should be evacuated by now. Oh wait, Chizue is saying something.
"…Another big pile of books. I mean what's the point? Kagehiroto onee-sama is never going to read them." Chizue sighed, clearly expecting some sort of reaction.
"I know what you mean. We choose our friends, not our relatives." Just as he finished speaking, Metsuhai knew this wasn't the reaction Chizue expected, so he added "Thank the heavens, you are nothing like him." For a moment it looked like Chizue might be insulted by the sheer thought of such a comparison, but instead she simply chuckled.
Tonight. I'll definitely do it. Metsuhai already seriously considered it twice in the last five days but now it was final, as if set in stone. It will be our first kiss tonight. Just the thought had made his heart race, and Metsuhai had to regain his composure anew to keep track of the always moving elusive enemy.
Metsuhai led Chizue on a muddy road going between the wooden houses. It was the first mission the couple had gone to together for a while now, but it almost felt like an order- approved date. The two had been meeting in almost every other evening for the past two weeks, but during the day they were each busy with their own duties. Either way, they spent a lot of time talking, so much so that it truly felt like they had no secrets and they could talk about anything. Of course, it meant the rumors about them began to spread. Previously, Metsuhai would not like this, but after defeating Airborg he became really famous. At this point even if everyone knew Chizue and he were a couple (something which technically wasn't accurate at least), it would not bring Chizue one bit of shame. The public was actually rooting for these kind of romances. He was a commoner and a hero, and she was the noblest of the nobles. Although Metsuhai still sometimes worried that one night armored men would throw him in some dungeon, when Gou finds out how serious things are.
With that said, there were many people disappointed by the rumors of this relationship. To be specific, women.
Metsuhai had never experienced anything like this before. Whenever he went fan-girls followed him, took pictured with him, flirted with him and some even clearly suggested they wanted to get to know him up close. It was like becoming a celebrity. At first Metsuhai was annoyed by this overflowing attention, especially since it was right after Koi's death. He even snapped at one poor girl, asking her if she knew who Koi was, which left Metsuhai with some serious regret. But by now he really started enjoying this. The amount of girls decreased a little bit, too, which made it much more manageable. Either way, Metsuhai was really happy to be alive. As Koi's end proved, no matter how powerful and well prepared, being on the battlefield for the fate of the world was never safe. It was really close this time… Metsuhai closed his eyes for a moment, remembering how he almost died right then and there after ending the fight with Airborg, crawling, desperately reaching for the strong health potion buried within his backpack (which was normally magically shrank and hidden on his belt). It wasn't enough to heal him of course, but it kept him alive until the order helicopters got there. The sensations of pain and exhaustion after the Airborg fight still lingered in Metsuhai's mind, especially that nerve- wrecking race for the potion. And then there was Koi's funeral, where Metsuhai could only think how Koi might have lived if only Metsuhai would have been just a bit faster. But I have to look forward. I'll take staying alive as a victory. And now, everyone considers me a hero. Even the girls are after me. With that said, Metsuhai already thought that if this keeps up for another month it would get annoying again.
The air became chilly and carried with it some unexplainable sense of dread. Metsuhai didn't even have to tell Chizue the enemy was nearby. The two moved carefully, their steps almost completely silent in the mud.
The Darkness Phantom materialized behind Chizue, a robe covered creature with a rag hiding his face. Only two white eyes without pupils could be seen through the rag, empty eyes yet with clear intentions. Behind his back were two long straight swords.
The duel blades were drawn in an instant, but the two brave heroes reacted just in time. Chizue, the target of the assault, slid sideways, completely avoiding the attack. Metsuhai was already on the counter- attack, his blade in the middle of an arc- like movement carrying great force. To Metsuhai's surprise the phantom blocked the strike with perfect technique, only pushed backwards slightly.
Is it because of that half step? Metsuhai's first reaction and his first half-step in the battle were meant to defend Chizue rather than attacking, and now he couldn't but wonder whether that made a difference in getting a hit on the enemy. I should've known she'll be fine, Metsuhai tried convincing himself, but it was so sudden…
Metsuhai and the Darkness Phantom exchanged blows with incredible speed and skill, their swords clashing repeatedly. Metsuhai was working with his sword and shield, pushing the fencing phantom back. It was clear Metsuhai had superior strength and he wasn't lacking in skill either. Even the phantom's attempts to use his flight to gain advantage changed little. The phantom however wasn't about to admit defeat. Flying back, he aimed his palm and gathered black energy in front of it. However it seemed he had been too focused solely on Metsuhai. Chizue appeared from the side, and chopped off the phantom's right arm, severing it from the shoulder. Though the phantom was not bleeding, he was clearly in pain, shouting a blood- freezing scram. The scream could easily intimidate an unexperienced opponent, but Metsuhai didn't even slow down. Charging at the phantom, his sword overwhelming the now one- handed enemy. The phantom, who wasn't used to fighting with only one arm, couldn't fight back to Metsuhai properly no more. In no time, his other arm was flying in the air. With a white blast of Chizue's Faith Magic, the phantom went to the ground, his body falling apart. The phantom was struggling not to dissolve. Chizue turned to Metsuhai, smiling. "See that wasn't so hard." Metsuhai wasn't sharing her happiness. Behind Chizue's back, the phantom was furious. That anger gave him a surge of power. The phantom forced his dissolving body back into form, his eyes glowing. One of the phantom's blades began shaking and then slowly took to the air, aiming his sharp end to Chizue's back.
There was no time to for a warning. Metsuhai charged at Chizue, withdrawing his sword as the phantom's blade was thrown with great velocity. Chizue barely had time to be surprised when Metsuhai pushed her out of the way. The blade grazed his left arm instead of piercing Chizue. Seeing his last assault failed, the phantom lost his fighting spirit- the only thing still keeping him together. The phantom finally broke into millions of tiny particles.
"Umm, thanks…"
Metsuhai rushed to let go off Chizue. "This mission is over, we did it."
Chizue nodded and the two began making their way back silently. Metsuhai started thinking, his mind returning to a certain matter he had been feeling for a while, but couldn't put into words until now. "I thought I was about to lose you there for a moment."
"It was dangerous alright. You seem to have a habit of saving me." Chizue's tone was quite cheerful unlike Metsuhai's quiet voice.
"But what if I wasn't here?"
Chizue didn't answer for a moment. When she did there was no cheerfulness there. "Are you asking how I would handle a Darkness Phantom on my own? It would be challenging for sure. I know you are stronger than me Metsuhai, no need to rub it in."
"No no, it wasn't what I meant at all. I am not denying your strength. It's not about that. Koi was stronger than me, and he was still defeated. I just wonder if you really have to put yourself in danger like that."
"What are you saying? When you fight evil, danger is inevitable. There isn't a single warrior of the order not putting his life on the line, especially on the battlefield."
Metsuhai diverted his gaze away from Chizue, looking at his own shoes. "… Yeah. That's why I've been wondering if you really have to be on the battlefield…"
Chizue looked shocked. For a moment she was at a loss for words. Then she spoke really fast. "Of course I do. Is there anything better and more noble than fighting for the sake of humanity?! Am I exempt from that responsibility for some reason?..."
"Ehh…"
"…I have been fighting the armies of Inferno longer than you. We met on the battlefield, in case you forgot. If I wasn't there, you would have met your end by the hands of Baron Phaulin."
"I know that," Metsuhai insisted despite Chizue's apparent anger, "I'll never forget it. Your presence was inspiring beyond words. But that doesn't change the fact that you almost died that day. That's despite having the holy armor and having the best training, best gears, potions and what not. It was always so easy for you. I went through hell to get where I am now!"
"You have no idea what you're talking about. I am a politician without my consent. All that gossiping, and conferences, and unwelcome attention. The media following me everywhere. The aristocracy examining my every breath and commenting on my every word. You aren't the only one who had had a hard time. You have no idea how straining and tiring all that is."
"And that's exactly why I think you shouldn't be on the front lines. For you, being the warrior is the easy choice, rather than the right one. We both know that you could contribute to the order more as a noble."
"How dare you presume to tell an Arisu what to do!?" Chizue was furious, her voice loud yet trembling, "You don't understand at all. You sound just like my father!"
Now she uses her Arisu name? Her emotions are out of control. I know I'm right. There's a reason most women are not fit for the battlefield.
"I am sorry, but maybe he has a point."
Chizue defiantly turned her back and walked away, saying nothing.
…
I really messed up big time… Metsuhai looked at his civil phone instead of listening to Ando's briefing, (Ando spoke to a small group of warriors about a mission which sounded rather simple) No calls, no messages. Metsuhai haven't heard from Chizue for three days now. She was obviously avoiding him. Maybe she decided to cut contact with me for good…
"…and when you find the nest of the three eyed crows and…"
The phone vibrated. For a moment Metsuhai was overjoyed, but it was Tsukiyama.
"Fugughuu are you listening?" Ando finally noticed something was amiss, "You are in charge of this mission you know."
"Sorry sir, my trainer is calling. May I take this call? It will be brief, I'm sure."
Ando looked displeased, but nodded.
"Sensei, is it urgent? The timing isn't perfect."
"Just listen. I have a special training in store for you. Be at my house at five, no excuses."
"Roger." I'll have to finish the mission first, but there's some time.
…
Chizue, wearing her battle gear, breathed in. The mountain air here was so fresh. "So why are we still going up the mountain? I am sure no ratman ran away."
The mountain was so big it felt like it was trying to pierce the sky. However the green lush flora was very welcoming and calm.
"You'll see soon," mysteriously answered Marco. Marco Daichi was also wearing his armor, and somehow looked better than ever. It only took another minute of walking up the mountain- road to reach the summit.
The view was incredible. The abundant trees and the roar of the river flowing through the rocks. The birds, as if floating on the horizon. Chizue practically stopped her breath for a moment, admiring this natural beauty. It's worth living just to see this.
Marco closely watched Chizue's expression, waiting for a long moment. Finally he got closer and spoke quietly, his voice rich and full of meaning. "This place is very special. Looking at it, I am filled with inspiration. It's not just the view, either. On this very mountain grows one of the rarest flowers in the world. Only few of them even exist and they only show their beauty once in many years. The local natives consider them sacred. They say whoever sees one will be eternally blessed."
Seemingly out of nowhere, Marco drew a single purple flower. It definitely was unique, and smelled wonderfully too.
Chizue stared at the flower presented before her, speechless. "I would like you to have this one. It's my gift to you."
"When did you even…"
"I love you Chizue Arisu. I've been in love with you since the first moment I laid eyes on you."
Chizue looked at Marco with both eyes wide open. She was definitely caught off guard. Marco seemed to try standing like a statue, but he was clearly nervous. Chizue turned away from Marco, her face blushing. But it was only for a moment. When she met Marco's gaze her expression was calm.
"I am sorry, Marco- san. You have always been so close to me, a good friend I can always count on. But I don't feel like you do. The one I love is Metsuhai. Thank you for telling me how you feel."
Marco seemed to want to say something but instead dropped the purple flower and stormed off.
…
Metsuhai quickly made his way to Tsukiyama's place, still wearing his chainmail armor. I wonder what kind of hellish training he has for me this time. It can't be worse than wrestling the crusher anyway. Metsuhai actually really improved in these brutal wrestling matches though he felt no pride in that. All he could think about when stepping into that ring with Brakanyer were the many ways in which the crusher brought him to submission. Armlocks, naked chokes, body slams and always with no mercy.
The balloons were the first sign of what's coming. They were everywhere. Red, yellow, green, blue and pink. They were filled with helium, tied to the many chairs spread in the yard (plastic chairs Metsuhai had never seen here before) and to the railings surrounding the house as well. Some balloons simply floated in the air, clearly staying in place due to magic.
Right at the entrance, a giant balloon of a kid wearing chainmail which was supposed to look like Metsuhai could not be missed. It had some remote resemblance to the original, that's if Metsuhai were to gain fifty kilos. It looked ridiculous.
Then there was the rhythmic disco music. Metsuhai thought he heard it once before, perhaps when Tsukiyama was showing Roteah cool stuff. The music came from a giant black speaker not too far from the 'Metsuhai' balloon. Near the speaker stood Tsukiyama, Brakanyer wearing his raincoat and detective like clothes, Roteah wearing a hat and shoes looking like the kid that he is and Bonehead wearing clothes which concealed his body from head to toe. His face was hidden behind a mask.
Metsuhai approached Tsukiyama with fast steps, noticing long tables filled with food and snacks. "Sensei, what's going on?"
"Keeping your fighting spirit strong is part of any warrior's training. Happy birthday, Metsuhai."
For a moment Metsuhai was shocked. He hasn't been particularly paying attention to the date, but it only took a moment for him to realize Tsukiyama was correct, he just turned eighteen.
"Metsuhai-kun," Brakanyer spoke normally but it still sounded threatening, "Where I come from there are no parties, the only celebration is when eating the enemy. Sometimes we had a big meal after a serious victory. I don't get all those balloons. Either way I have a present for you."
Brakanyer presented Metsuhai with a huge lump of meet. "Cooked it myself. Don't worry. Not human flesh. Your entire race is on diet, or so I think you call it."
"Thank you. I'll make sure to eat all of it." No way I'll be able to eat so much alone.
"Good. Then I go. Guests are coming and master said they shouldn't see me."
Brakanyer walked away. Metsuhai looked at Bonehead and Roteah for a moment but it seemed both of them had nothing to say to him. Neither did they bring gifts. Bonehead made his way to a table loaded with wine bottles, opening one of them.
Tsukiyama clearly didn't mind. "Don't eat the cake before most guests arrive."
Metsuhai sent a questioning look and Tsukiyama explained, "I made sure to invite all your friends. I can already sense their energy."
Metsuhai nervously munched on some snacks. It's not like he never celebrated his birthday before, but that felt like so long ago. It was like a different life. And even back then, it was just him and his parents, although unlike now some people did congratulate him through the phone. So this big party was a completely new experience.
The first arrivals were Takeo, Nao and Masaru, arriving all together. Takeo was wearing his black leather and greeted Metsuhai by lifting both arms diagonally, stretching out his thumbs. "It's good to see you man! But I thought this was a surprise party?" He was super energetic.
"Believe me, I was surprised alright. Thank you for coming."
Nao looked a bit strange wearing formal clothes instead of his heavy armor. Looking right and left, he remarked "We are among the first to arrive, ha?"
"Usually in a surprise party everyone arrives before the guest of honor. But I am sure we got here quiet early." (Masaru, wearing of course his fancy musketeer uniform)
"I guess it's a different kind of surprise," Metsuhai explained, "I didn't know you were coming until moments ago. Anyway, you should not hold back on the food, enjoy yourselves."
"That's so good to hear!" Kuma just arrived, and now, after tapping Metsuhai on the shoulder made his way to the tables. "Don't miss the one with the meat!" Metsuhai encouraged.
Metsuhai wanted to speak with Masaru, but now the guests were arriving nonstop. Marco arrived wearing his battle gear. "Sorry about my wear, I have a mission soon." Marco's face was somewhat expressionless, like a poker face. Metsuhai mistakenly thought he was sad for not being able to stay long. After him, Lezner came leading a group of order soldiers Metsuhai barely recognized. Some of them were people he fought alongside of once or more, others were people he saved and their friends. They all were pretty excited of introducing themselves and talking to him, the famous warrior who brought down Mordon, Invados and now even Airborg. Many of them even brought their wives and girlfriends to the party with them.
Surprisingly, from his close friends, so far only Nao brought him a present. It was wrapped, but by the shape of it, it was a helmet. Nevertheless, a small pile of wrapped presents from the guests began growing near the entrance.
I wish Chizue was here with me… wait was she even invited?
Tuskiyama surely knew of Metsuhai and Chizue's closeness, she even met Tsukiyama here once. But perhaps inviting an Arisu was problematic? No, Tsukiyama wouldn't let something like that stop him. So she was definitely invited. The only question is- will she come.
Just when Metsuhai tried to think of an excuse to stop the endless conversation with the many people he barely knew, Yamius, Alex and Akiara arrived. Metsuhai sent this trio a big smile and approached. "Mordon Slayer," Yamius saluted, "Or is it the Airborg Destroyer now? I can't keep up with your progress."
"Happy birthday champ!" (Alex)
"It's good the three of you are here. Sensei Tsukiyama really did manage to invite all the right people. Yamius, I didn't see you for a while. These last couple of weeks you said we couldn't meet, it almost felt like you were giving me excuses. Are you intimidated about my growing chess skills?"
For a moment it seemed like Yamius and Akiara exchanged looks. Do they know each other?
Yamius was dressed rather casually, perhaps more casually than Metsuhai ever saw him dress. With a simple shirt and comfortable looking pants he clearly didn't dress for a party, his arms exposed. He wasn't overly muscular, yet he clearly had a trained body of a warrior.
Akiara, who so far hasn't said a thing (only shyly nodded towards Metsuhai as a greeting) on the other hand was the perfect picture of gentleness and bloom. Her light purple dress complemented her soft white skin. Metsuhai thought he can sense an alluring flowery scent from her.
"I had a lot on my mind," calmly answered Yamius, "I'll go get me something to eat, I'm starving." He looks so distant, and even his speech is unusual. He is surely going through something. "Sorry about that, man," apologized Alex, "Yamius had bad mood all the way here. I'll go and try to cheer him up a bit. But first I've got something for you."
Alex, whose formal clothing was clearly above his pay grade handed Metsuhai a little plastic bag. Inside it was a framed picture of Metsuhai, Yamius and John playing cards, laughing. Metsuhai had to stop himself from tearing up, looking at it. "Thank you. It means more to me than I can put into words."
"I know." Alex went after Yamius. Akiara and Metsuhai remained alone in the entrance.
"I am honored to be here with you, though I will have to return to the hospital so I can't stay for too long."
"That's alright. I am glad you're here. I mean it."
Akiara blushed slightly. She took out from her small bag what looked like a small Globus made of gold. The ball at the heart of the Globus was smaller than a ping pong ball.
"I know my present is not as meaningful is that picture but I hope you'll treasure it still. When I saw this at the store it somehow reminded me of you."
"Thank you. I will."
Akiara bowed slightly and went for the tables. Soon enough she was engaged in conversation with a couple of women who looked very homely. In the meantime Takeo replaced the disco music with one of his own favorites. Some, including Roteah seemed to approve of the change. The music was louder and Metsuhai figured it must be some sort of heavy rock. I don't mind this, but some people near the speaker are holding on to their ears, Maybe I should intervene.
But before Metsuhai managed to sort this out a pair of strong arms grabbed him and dragged him (Metsuhai didn't resist, understanding what's going on) to seat around the table together with his friends. It was Nao's doing, who also took his seat near Metsuhai. Masaru whose plate was perfectly clean spoke. "I believe to be speaking for all of us, Metsuhai- kun. Thank you for inviting us," Masaru gestured with his hand as if revealing the food loaded table and the people around it. Kuma, Nao, Masaru and Marco were all there, and Takeo (whose music was rejected by the people of the party) was on the way. "On this happy occasion we should acknowledge that all of us have successfully debuted on the battlefield. The war separated us, and took a heavy toll from each and every one of us. But here we are. Together, strong and happy."
Masaru raised a glass. The others (including Takeo) followed. "Let us drink and eat to our hearts content. Today we celebrate. Cheers."
Everyone drank and started eating. Soon enough they began sharing stories of war. "…And I fell into that same pit. Luckily I didn't hit my head. Unluckily, the pit wasn't empty. There were two hungry crushers already in there."
"Aren't you exaggerating a bit, Nao?" By his finger movement, it looked like Takeo was scolding Nao, "Please don't tell me you beat two crushers with your bare hands. All of us here know you aren't great with magic, so if you lose your weapon you are in trouble. Over- glorifying your achievements is not like you. At least not when you are sober."
"Listen to the rest of the story. Where was I? Oh yeah. So I fall into the pit. One crusher was already wounded, but the other charged at me…"
More people began joining the table. First they brought chairs, but now they even adjoined another table to give themselves more room. Yamius and Alex were among the first to join.
Nao finished his story. It made sense and was inspiring indeed. "So, who's next?" Kuma asked with a full mouth. He himself was actually the first to tell his story, which was his fight with the Minotaur at the Armageddon Championship. He received quite the applauds. Everyone here knew that few engaged a Minotaur one on one and lived to tell about it.
"I think we all want to hear from you, Metsuhai- kun," Yamius voiced his opinion, "Tell us of your incredible victory against Airborg. I heard he was quite strong."
A murmur of agreement spread across the table. All eyes went to Metsuhai.
"Quite strong you say? Anyone here who hasn't met Airborg and thinks he knows how strong he is, is deluding himself. Airborg was the most round up fighter in the entire dark army. He had no weakness to speak of, and utilized all the advantages of gargoyles to the fullest. His sense of strategy and tactics was impeccable. I have never fought someone else so fast in the air. It's not just speed. His maneuvering was truly terrifying. I had fought him with everything I had, and all I can say is, my victory was a miracle. If we were to have a rematch, my loss is pretty much guaranteed."
Metsuhai wanted to say nothing more. Thinking about Airborg, reminded him of Koi's death.
"Damn, they don't give those monetary rewards easy ha?" (Nao)
"Don't sell yourself short, Airborg Destroyer," insisted Takeo, "You have the habit of making miracles on the battlefield. Even better than anyone else here. I have seen it personally."
The warriors kept speaking of their adventures for more than an hour. When they finished, Marco already had to leave. The big group from earlier naturally split into smaller ones, each with its own conversations. Metsuhai used this opportunity to share the one matter still troubling him even now with Alex and Yamius.
"So there is this young lady I have interest in."
"Chizue Arisu," immediately stated Yamius.
"Hey, you never know," interjected Alex, "Maybe he fancies another woman. Keep your options open. Your chances with royalty aren't good as it is."
"I am talking about Chizue," Metsuhai admitted, "But keep your voices down about that."
"Sure man, but everybody knows. All the guards in the palace are talking about it for weeks."
"I can't help but wonder who I have to thank for that…" (Metsuhai)
"Hey hey, common, don't be harsh. Palace guards are like brothers. No way it gets to the public from us."
"Either way the knowledge is out there," Yamius ended the topic, "Are you worried about Mr. Arisu- sama's reaction when he finds out? I believe he might already know…"
"It does worry me, but that's not what I wanna talk about. Here's the deal. Chizue and I had a huge fight and I don't know what to do about it. I was hoping she'll come today, but it sure doesn't look like that's happening…"
"Oh man oh man. You messed up my friend. It doesn't matter what that was about or what you thought at the time. You gotta apologize and make it yesterday. You give her flowers, chocolates and expensive gifts and beg for her forgiveness before your rich and famous bride runs off with another man." (Alex)
"Ahhh… Yamius, please tell me you don't also think that way."
"First tell me exactly what happened."
Metsuhai shortly explained the conflict. "…Am I wrong? Should I have not brought it up?"
"Whether you are right or wrong is complicated but irrelevant," Yamius remarked, thinking for a bit before continuing. "Bringing up difficult and important topics is what any worthwhile relationship is about. Just like when talking to your friends, honesty is key. You did not lie, you did not insult, at least intentionally. Have you said to her something which was not true? Did you express an idea you did not believe? If not, then I can't recommend an apology. Give her a bit of time, and then, speak to her again."
It was getting pretty late. Some of the guests had already left. Akiara was considering to make her way out as well, but something most unexpected happened.
Bonehead placed his glove- covered hand on Akiara's shoulder, surprising her. "Wanna have a drink of red wine with me, or you have another skeleton?!"
"Um…" Akiara was speechless. She was never approached in such manor, though she did think this must be some unusual hospital- related joke. Yamius almost chocked on his food. Both Metsuhai and Yamius rushed to Akiara's help.
Bonehead must be completely drunk. I don't think he is dangerous with Tsukiyama here, but if he blows his cover it will destroy the party. (Metsuhai)
That mask wearing bastard better let go of my little sister! (Yamius)
Metsuhai arrived to the scene first, but stopped. Realizing he doesn't know what to say. "You in the mask! What business do you have with Akiara- chan?" Yamius stepped forward, somewhat embarking upon Bonehead's personal space. Bonehead let go of Akiara's shoulder.
"Is there some sort of problem?"
Yamius seemed to have relaxed a bit, though he still showed hostility towards Bonehead. "It is improper to place your hand on a gentle young lady. Unless this masked one is an acquaintance of yours, sister?"
"I don't think he is…"
I had no idea they were siblings. Yamius took that uncertain answer as fact. "She doesn't know you, and neither do I. In fact, why are you the only one in this party wearing a mask? It's not a masquerade festival."
Oh no, I hope Bonehead has a good excuse. I can't take that risk. "Yamius, wait…"
"But I am not the only one." Bonehead pointed to the yard entrance, where another masked individual just entered. What is going on? For a moment Metsuhai considered the option that Tsukiyama had encountered another candidate for the Dark Grey Club and had invited him, but that didn't make sense. Tsukiyama would have introduced Metsuhai and the others to him sooner for sure. "Its fine Brother," Akiara reassured, "I was just leaving anyway. Perhaps another time, masked one."
Metsuhai closed his eyes for a moment, trying to sense the energy of the new guest. Although it was quite hidden, Metsuhai recognized it almost immediately. With a wide and surprised smile, Metsuhai approached the masked guest. "I did not expect to meet you today, father," Metsuhai made sure to speak quietly enough for no one else to hear. "I would never miss my son's eighteenth birthday. Although it does help that you are not within the order capital. It's dangerous nevertheless, so I'll only take a short while of your time. Could we go somewhere private?"
Metsuhai nodded. It would be quite weird to leave the party area…
Very loudly, Metsuhai said "No problem at all. I'll show you where that famous ancient pen is." The Fugughuu men went inside going in a bit, isolated in the room away from the rest of the guests. I didn't really asked sensei's permission to let my father in like this, but Tsukiyama did invite him for me so I think its fine.
Gin slid his mask backwards, thus wearing it a bit like a hat instead of a mask and revealing his face. He looked at Metsuhai with pride and joy.
"Dad!" Metsuhai rushed to his father and they hugged. For a moment Metsuhai felt like a kid again. "You've grown much, Metsu." When Metsuhai let go, Gin gestured to the house. "Where are we exactly? Despite your great achievements I don't see how you can afford this."
"It's my trainer's, my sensei's house. Didn't he invite you here?" Now that I think about it, I never told Tsukiyama the details about my parents. He couldn't have known. I guess I got used to Tsukiyama knowing everything and everyone.
"Hikari told me." Mom? "I asked her to look for a relatively safe opportunity for us to meet. She looked into the future and told me to come here. She even specified the time."
"Wait, wait. Mom is a future teller?"
"In the Freedom Association they call them seers but yes. Sorceress, Future teller and a great wife. Aren't I amazing for marrying your mom?!"
"Indeed you are…" Although I wish she was here too. Metsuhai examined his father, making sure not to miss his expression as he asked "Why didn't she come today, with you? Or at least call. I haven't heard from her for so long."
Gin nodded, and then his smile got wider. "How about I let her explain it herself."
Gin drew something small and shiny from his pocket. He carefully placed it on a flat table and released a bit of energy from his hand. The device began growing, turning into a basketball sized smooth crystal ball. Metsuhai approached the crystal ball hesitantly and looked into it.
For a moment he was simply looking at the clear crystal. Then it was as if his gaze was pooled inwards, into the depths of the crystal ball. Himkari's face appeared in the crystal, somewhat transparent to an onlooker from the outside, but clear as the sky to Metsuhai.
"Metsu, my dear Metsu…" She is already near tears and that makes me want to cry. But I have to show mom just how great I am doing. "I am finally eighteen years old mom. Hopefully soon enough I'll be supporting you and dad financially rather than the other way around. Though you two seem to be doing just fine." It wasn't exactly what Metsuhai wanted to say, but those were the words coming out of his mouth.
"My boy, I am so sorry. I know you went through so much hardship and I couldn't be there for you. I have so many regrets."
"I love you and I know you love me. So what's there to regret? There's much I want to know, but for now, tell me anything you want, I'll gladly listen."
"I don't know where to start…"
"Where are you now? Why aren't you here with me and dad?"
"I am working as an assistant of a magical artifacts manufacturer in the Freedom Association central city. It may sound boring but there's more to this job than meets the eye. I can utilize my skills here. I am completely safe here from the sorcery hating factions, and with my identity hidden, I have no enemies here…"
All this talk of enemies and hidden identities makes me feel like my parents are spies or something. I wish things were simpler.
"…The people here are really nice. I have lots of friends here, welcoming me with a smile. So don't worry about me one bit, okay?"
"Only if you promise not to worry about me too much."
"You know I can't do that… You are risking your life every single day out there. As your mother this thought never leaves me."
"I would like to say that I wish things were different, but honestly I found my place here. The order has problems in it, but it's my home. I know who I am in this life. That means a lot to me."
"I know son. I've been watching you through my crystal ball whenever I could. I wish I could hold you in my arms like when you were small and tell you everything is gonna be okay…"
Mom, I am an adult, this is almost embarrassing, but I am so happy just hearing your voice and seeing your face.
"…But I can't safely leave the Association territory. I need to keep a low profile for a while."
"Those damn sorcery haters. They should be all exiled to Inferno."
"Don't forget who the real enemy is," interjected Gin, "These conflicts amongst ourselves play right into the hands of the dark army."
"I am sorry I didn't call sooner," Hikari answered the question Metsuhai wanted to ask, "The intelligence unit of the order has agents from the sorcerers' haters. The unit follows everyone. The order, the dark army and the Freedom Association included. With the amount of the information at hand a lot of important intel goes unnoticed. But sometimes they do make it right."
"So I guess that means I won't hear from you for a while again."
"Not like before. Through that crystal it's a lot harder to detect, so we can talk a bit. Although, I'll be making the calls, for safety."
There was a moment of silence. It looked like Hikari was preparing herself for something.
"That's of course if you still want to talk to me at all."
Metsuhai was shocked. "What are you talking about, mom? Of course I do."
"I know I raised a son with good values, but you have no obligation to show me respect or love," Hikari struggled to get the words out, "I have done something terrible. My intentions were good, but I should have never placed that amulet on you. I should have told you the truth from the beginning. I am so sorry. It's all my fault." Hikari's voice broke a bit and she struggled not to cry. "I convinced your father, it was my idea. I just wanted you to have an easy, painless life. Away from all this. I told myself, 'he is still such a small sweet kid, I'll tell him later' but before I knew it you were a teenager, a high-schooler and I still didn't tell you. Gin brought the topic several times, but I shot him down until he stopped… It was so convenient to just keep things as they were…" Hikari's face was in tears. "…The amulet wasn't even supposed to work that long. Somehow it synchronized with your own growth and I – I am so sorry. Because of me you have endured so much…" She could speak no more.
"There were a few moments where my lack of power frustrated me. But the truth is, we don't know what would've happened if I haven't worn the amulet. These tests made me strong. Either way, I forgive you. I have forgiven you long time ago."
"Thank you, thank you son!"
Metsuhai and his mother talked a bit more about unimportant things, until Gin reminded Metsuhai there is a party for him to come back too.
Back outside Metsuhai made sure to act as if the conversation in the house was nothing but formalities, keeping some distance from his father (who wore his mask again). It was mostly successful, only Yamius seemed suspicious of the masked guest. Metsuhai tried distracting Yamius with a conversation about rook endgames but to his surprise, Yamius was clearly not into it. He looked distant a bit. Just when Metsuhai thought about pressing the matter, suddenly the constantly chatting guests fell to silence almost instantly.
Metsuhai got up and looked at the entrance. The source of bewilderment was non other than Magnus, the most powerful wizard in the world. He wore the same dark- green robe he had when Metsuhai met him back in the cave. With his fancy mighty staff behind his back, Magnus made an unfriendly expression. Speaking with a deceptively soft voice "Is there a problem?"
Masaru, who was pretty close to the entrance was the first to react. "No my good man, everyone are welcome here. I was actually talking about…the endangerment of coral reefs by pollution." Masaru sent a meaningful look to Nao, who sent his hand behind his back (reaching for an axe that wasn't there). Nao hurriedly grabbed a spoon. In a moment everyone began talking, doesn't matter about what. Only Tsukiyama seemed to be completely indifferent, staring at a random point. Magnus began slowly making his way to Metsuhai. Metsuhai couldn't stop himself from looking to his father's direction, but Gin was nowhere to be found. Dad must have decided on strategical retreat. Roteah and bonehead both took seats not far from Metsuhai, somewhat interested. Yamius also didn't leave his seat, staying close. Magnus' gaze briefly stopped on the pile of presents. He approached Metsuhai casually "ah happy birthday? Just a moment…"
Metsuhai, who wasn't sure what he should say anyway, patiently waited for Magnus who seemed to be looking for something in his robes. Finally Magnus pulled out of his robes a shiny object. A dagger! Luckily Metsuhai had enough composure to stop his body from reacting automatically. Although a dagger would be dangerous from this distance, it was clear from Magnus' movement it wasn't an attack. Besides, Magnus doesn't use daggers for fighting. He didn't really need any weapon whatsoever against Metsuhai, and if he had to use one, it would have been his staff. Magnus presented the dagger, made of pure gold with a diamond embedded in it. "Your present."
For a moment Yamius' face became pale. That's no weapon. Though it's very sharp, this dagger is meant to be used primarily in rituals. Especially dark ones. Metsuhai however wasn't aware of these details. He did know though, that this dagger was extremely expensive.
"Thank you. You certainly surprised me… What brings you here?"
"I thought it's a good opportunity to check on you, my exciting specimen. Your magic did get stronger. Keep practicing, you might just be a worthy sorcerer yet."
Metsuhai, who realized all eyes in the room were on him and didn't really want to respond to that comment anyway, simply said "Take your seat near the tables. The food is great. Dig in."
Magnus nodded lightly, making his way to the side of the very furthest table.
Soon enough the party continued as if nothing happened. Takeo and Nao were arm wrestling, with cheers from onlookers. Kuma was on yet another eating session. Eating a lot. Every one of Metsuhai's friends who were still there seemed to be having fun. Surprisingly, even Masaru got a bit drunk. With the changing music, many people got up and started dancing. It was truly becoming one memorable celebration.
Magnus was standing at the side, his arms crossed. He seemed to lack any party spirit. If he came here with any intention of having fun, he clearly wasn't showing it. Tsukiyama was standing far on the other side looking to the opposite direction. This surprised Metsuhai, because Tsukiyama was certainly having fun earlier. Bonehead was emptying yet another bottle near Metsuhai. Metsuhai figured it was a good chance to figure out what is the story here. "Why are these two like that?"
"They are avoiding each other. This is how they show each other respect." Bonehead's answer wasn't perfectly satisfying but he already got up. Bonehead went to Magnus.
Bonehead put his glove covered hand across Magnus shoulder, "taste some crimson wine. It's powerful. You will feel as if you're flying." Magnus grabbed bonehead's palm, removing his hand from his shoulder. "I was just leaving." Magnus turned away and left without looking back.
…
The party was surely nearing its end. The music was turned off. Almost all the guests already left. Even Tsukiyama had to leave half an hour ago. "Sorry kid, one of my clients has a crisis. I'll take care of it quick but just getting there will take time. I'll see you back in training."
And now Kuma, among the last of Metsuhai's friends still there was also making his way out. By the way he held his stomach, this might have been the rare case where even Kuma reached his limit. This was a great birthday… Metsuhai knew this to be true. It was perhaps the best birthday celebration he had in his life. But one matter kept weighing heavily on his mind. Chizue never came after all. Metsuhai wondered off in the direction of the entrance, as if by being there he could make Chizue appear. She was so furious last time we spoke… But still, I expected here to at least give an excuse for not showing up. No, actually if she wasn't gonna show up because she was angry, that's also something I expected her to say. But she hasn't even sent me a single message. Metsuhai looked at his phone for longer than he cared to admit. Because everyone relevant (aside from Chizue) visited him, there were almost no messages. Only a couple of short texts from friends from the time before his involvement with the order.
Fuck it, I'm calling her myself now. She at least owes me a bit of her time on my birthday.
Metsuhai called and heard a familiar ringing sound not so far away. His expression immediately turned to a smile. He was overjoyed. She is here. She came after all. Though she sure took her time… Metsuhai rushed to the direction of the sound. It was close enough for him not to even need to sense her energy. I'll even apologize to her, though I can't exactly take my words back.
Metsuhai turned around the street, not questioning why Chizue would chose to come from the alley. The ringing just stopped. Metsuhai didn't even have time to think why wouldn't she answer after coming when he saw Vardalac. He looked just like back in the Armageddon Championship, except he was carrying Chizue on his shoulder. "Metsu…hai, help me…" Chizue looked as if she took a dose of some strong drug. Her pupils were dilated, and the eyes looked almost empty. Her body was shivering slightly, making her look so frail in her white dress.
"You… you monster! Let her go!" Metsuhai aimed his palm to the side, calling for his sword, "What did you do to her?" (The sword flew to his hand)
Vardalac smiled, exposing his fangs. "What you should be worried about is what I am about to do to her." Vardalac disappeared like a shadow exposed to bright light. He is running away!
Metsuhai chased Vardalac across the streets, raging. He didn't care, neither did he think about how much stronger Vardalac actually was. Neither did he consider that he wasn't even wearing armor. All he cared about was giving chase. So fast! I can barely follow! Metsuhai powered up – using everything he has (including the double power up). He ran after Vardalac like a man gone mad. "Chizue! Wake up! Snap out of it!" Metsuhai's calls had no effect whatsoever. In fact, Chizue was carried lifelessly, completely unaware of what's going on. If it wasn't for the extreme chase, it would seem like she was sleeping. I need reinforcements, finally a logical thought broke through Metsuhai's rage. Metsuhai tried getting to his battlephone without diverting his attention from the constantly moving Vardalac.
"Quite persistent, aren't you? Can't you just accept defeat!"
"Never!"
Soon enough they weren't among the streets anymore. They were running in an open field and Vardalac had no cover. However Metsuhai didn't dare use magic on him. It could very easily miss and hit Chizue. Just when Metsuhai's breath began getting short and he considered attacking out of desperation, Vardalac stopped.
"I see you realized there's no escape. I don't care how strong you are, if you don't give her up right now, I'll make you pay!"
Vardalac moved his finger from up to down. A crack, a dimensional rift opened along the line, as if it's existence tears the world apart, like continents in a volcanic eruption. The opening widened with an ominous tearing sound, red light emanating from the other side. Finally a barely stable, roughly shaped like an ellipse gateway to Inferno, with sharp teeth- like inner edges was formed.
"Unfortunately for your efforts, I have reached my destination." Vardalac lightly pushed Chizue into the rift, almost as if letting her go. "No!" Metsuhai sprinted to save her. Chizue, soundly asleep, flew gently towards the mean-looking rift in reality. From the other side a huge orange muscular arm ending with long nails sharply closed around Chizue, pulling her in. The rift snapped closed right behind her. Metsuhai was so close, but he wasn't fast enough. And there it was, Chizue was gone.
"You bastard! I'll never forgive you!" Metsuhai charged at Vardalac leaving behind all sense of caution. "Do you really have the time for this?" As he spoke, Vardalac's transformed to a swarm of bats, flying to different directions "If I were you, I would worry less about catching me, and more about what is going to happen to your woman on the other side."
Metsuhai slashed many bats, fried (with his faith magic) lots of others, more than he could count. He unleashed his rage upon them. But he didn't get them all. Vardalac was gone. It was all over. Metsuhai fell on his knees and began to cry.
