Chapter 71 - Chapter 71: Threads of Deception

The night grew heavier as Mira led Fred and Ronan through a maze of forgotten alleys and crumbling side streets. The city had a way of hiding its darkest parts in plain sight—just beyond where ordinary people dared to look.

Fred stayed tense, his senses razor sharp. Every step they took could be an ambush. Every shadow could hide a gun aimed at their heads.

Mira moved like she owned the darkness, slipping through it without fear. Ronan, usually brash and careless, followed her with an almost religious reverence, like a man walking through a graveyard of ghosts he dared not awaken.

Finally, they stopped in front of a battered, half-collapsed building that looked like it hadn't seen life in decades. Broken windows, rusted steel beams jutting out like bones. It reeked of rot and forgotten promises.

"This is it," Mira said quietly, pushing open a side door that groaned on its hinges.

Inside, the air was thick with dust. Old furniture lay scattered, cobwebbed and forgotten. But deeper in the building, Mira led them to a hidden hatch in the floor. She knelt, pried it open, and revealed a narrow staircase spiraling down into darkness.

Fred hesitated. "Where does it lead?"

Mira looked over her shoulder, her eyes gleaming. "To the truth."

---

The staircase descended for what felt like forever. The deeper they went, the colder it became. Fred's breath fogged in the air, his footsteps muted by the thick layer of dust.

At the bottom, the world changed.

Massive tunnels stretched in every direction, carved through earth and concrete. Wires snaked along the ceilings. Strange symbols were painted on the walls. And all along the tunnels, there were doors—dozens, maybe hundreds—sealed tight with heavy locks.

Ronan whistled low. "What the hell is this place?"

Mira's face was grim. "Selene's real kingdom. Underground. Invisible. Untouchable. This is where she stores her leverage—information, prisoners, blackmail, secrets too dangerous to leave above."

Fred felt a chill crawl up his spine. He had heard rumors of Selene's 'ghost city,' but no one had ever confirmed it.

Until now.

"This is how she controls the city," Mira said. "Not through fear of death—but fear of exposure. She knows everyone's secrets. And she keeps them... here."

Fred's hands curled into fists. This wasn't just crime. This was domination at a level he had never imagined.

Mira walked ahead, stopping at one of the doors. She punched a code into a hidden panel, and the lock clicked open.

Inside, the small room was filled with shelves stacked with files, hard drives, and photo evidence. Names, dates, sins cataloged meticulously.

One whole wall was covered with photographs of politicians, businessmen, police officers—all compromised. All trapped.

Fred stepped inside, heart pounding. Somewhere in here, he realized, was the key to dismantling Selene's empire.

"You could destroy her with this," he whispered.

Mira nodded. "But it's not that simple. If you expose these secrets recklessly, you'll burn the whole city to the ground. Chaos will spread. Power vacuums. Blood in the streets."

Fred gritted his teeth. Always a price. Always a catch.

"So what's the plan?" Ronan asked.

Mira smiled thinly. "We hit her where it hurts. Piece by piece. We take her power from the shadows—just like she built it."

Fred stared at the wall of secrets, a thousand fates hanging in the balance.

He had wanted vengeance. He had wanted justice.

But this... this was a war. A slow, venomous war fought not with guns, but with whispers and betrayal.

And if they weren't careful, they would lose themselves in it.

---

As Mira outlined her strategy, Fred caught sight of something.

A thin black folder shoved behind the others. It wasn't labeled.

Curious, he pulled it free and opened it.

What he saw inside froze the blood in his veins.

Photographs of himself—talking to people, entering buildings, meeting with Ronan, even a picture of him sleeping in his apartment.

Every move he had made over the last year... recorded.

He flipped through the pages, faster now. Detailed reports. Conversations word-for-word.

Selene had been watching him long before he even knew her name.

Fred's stomach twisted. Had she chosen him? Had everything he thought was coincidence been orchestrated?

He looked up, trembling with a rage he could barely contain.

Mira saw the look on his face and spoke gently. "You're not the only one."

Fred slammed the folder shut. "This ends," he said, voice low and dangerous. "We end her."

Ronan placed a hand on his shoulder, grounding him. Mira simply nodded.

They were no longer fighting just for survival.

They were fighting for their souls.
