Chapter 36 - THE TRUTH BURNS

The world around Lilith felt like it was unraveling.

Nathan stood before her, his eyes dark and cold, like someone who had lived in the fire for far too long. The silver device in his hands hummed to life, filling the air with an unsettling buzz. Wires spread out, tapping into the walls, reaching for something deeper. Something hidden.

Lilith's pulse quickened. "Nathan, stop this isn't you. We can fix this. We can..."

"You don't understand, Lilith," Nathan interrupted, his voice sharp and full of malice. "It's too late for fixing. You left me. You abandoned me when I needed you the most. And now… you're going to help me finish what we started."

She felt the weight of his words crushing her chest. "I never..."

"I never gave up," Nathan cut in, his voice breaking through the air like a knife. "I thought I could forget. I thought I could bury it. But every day, I felt the fire. Every day, the lies suffocated me. I was already dead when you walked away. And now, you're going to join me."

Lilith took a step back, her eyes darting around for an escape. The walls felt like they were closing in, and the shadows in the corner of her vision were shifting alive, moving.

"You don't have to do this," she whispered, but her words felt so hollow against the chaos building between them.

Nathan's lips curled into a cruel grin. "Oh, but I do."

He pressed a button on the device, and suddenly, the room seemed to expand in every direction. The walls flickered with static, the air buzzing with energy. The lights overhead sparked and dimmed, casting long, haunting shadows. The floor beneath Lilith's feet trembled.

"I know you remember it now," Nathan said, his voice low and dangerous. "I know you remember that night the night you chose to leave. The night you thought I was dead."

Lilith stumbled back, her legs nearly giving way beneath her. The room spun, and for a moment, she couldn't breathe. Images flooded her mind fires, screams, the feeling of her heart sinking as she ran without looking back. The panic, the confusion, and then… the silence.

She had tried to forget, tried to erase it from her memory, but it was all coming back now. Every single detail. Nathan, her brother, trapped, burning. And her, running.

"I wasn't the one who died that night," Nathan spat, his eyes burning with something that wasn't human anymore. "You did. You left me there. You walked away from me."

"No!" Lilith gasped. "No, Nathan, I didn't..."

"You did," he whispered, his voice cracking with pain. "And now, you'll die here too. Just like I did."

Before Lilith could react, he twisted a dial on the device, and suddenly, the world shifted. A piercing, electric sound ripped through the air, making her ears ring. The walls began to break apart, the ground shaking violently beneath her.

Lilith stumbled, her heart racing in her chest. "What are you doing?!" she shouted, desperation creeping into her voice. "Nathan, please!"

He didn't respond. His eyes were locked onto hers, his expression cold and distant.

The device clicked one last time.

And then everything went dark..
