Cherreads

Chapter 1 - Chapter One

Lila Hart kicked off her paint-splattered sneakers the moment she stepped into the apartment, dropping her worn messenger bag by the door with a tired sigh. The scent of oil paint and turpentine clung to her like a second skin, trailing her into the cozy little living room she shared with her best friend and roommate, Sophia Lane.

The studio had drained her today—emotionally, physically—but it was the kind of exhaustion she welcomed. Art was her world, her refuge. The chaos of crowded rooms, polite smiles, and surface-level small talk? That, she avoided like the plague.

She pulled her loose hair into a messy bun as she collapsed onto the plush beige couch, stretching her legs and sinking into its warmth. Sophia was already there, sitting cross-legged with a glass of red wine in hand, flipping through a glossy magazine.

"Rough day?" Sophia asked, glancing at her with a sly smile.

"Understatement," Lila groaned. "I almost cried when I dropped my last canvas. It survived, but I think my sanity stayed behind."

Sophia laughed, the musical kind of laugh that always made Lila smile no matter how drained she was. "Then you definitely need some wine," she said, handing her the glass she'd already poured.

They sat for a while, giggling, chatting about everything and nothing—art, annoying gallery owners, the ridiculous number of DMs Sophia received from men she'd never met. The apartment buzzed with the kind of easy warmth that came from years of friendship.

And then Sophia said it.

"You should go to the gala in my place tomorrow night."

Lila blinked, the glass halfway to her lips. "Wait… what?"

Sophia leaned forward, her eyes gleaming. "I'm serious. It's the Everlight Charity Gala—invites only, ultra-exclusive. I was going with Theo—you know, the business tycoon I told you about—but he wants to fly me out for a private dinner instead. I can't be in two places at once. So… you're going."

Lila's breath seized. Her fingers tightened around the wine glass. "You want me to go to the most glamorous event of the year? In your place?"

"Yes." Sophia grinned like this was the most natural thing in the world. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, babe. There'll be press, elite entrepreneurs, celebrities, billionaires. Just imagine what could happen if you went."

"I don't want to imagine," Lila muttered, her heart pounding. "You know I freeze in crowds. I paint people—I don't talk to them."

Sophia rolled her eyes with affection. "You'll be fine. You'll go as me, no one will know the difference. You're stunning, Lila—absolutely breathtaking. You just never let anyone see it."

Lila scoffed. "I wear jeans and paint-smeared shirts every day."

"And somehow you still look better than half the girls on the red carpet," Sophia shot back. "That waist, those hips, those legs… You've got curves the gods sculpted. Your cheekbones could cut glass. And don't even get me started on your lips. You're sexy, babe—stop hiding it."

Lila's cheeks flushed. Compliments always felt foreign on her skin.

Before she could object again, Sophia jumped up and disappeared into her room, returning moments later with a sleek red gown draped over one arm. She held it out like a gift meant for royalty.

"Behold," she said with a dramatic flourish. "Your armor."

The dress was sinful—deep crimson satin that shimmered even under their apartment's dim lighting. It had a plunging neckline, a thigh-high slit, and a low back that promised every man in the room would turn his head. It was bold. Daring. Everything Lila wasn't.

"I… can't wear that," Lila whispered, wide-eyed.

"Yes, you can," Sophia said firmly. "And you will. Because under all your paint and modesty is a goddess who deserves to be seen."

Lila stared at the gown, then back at her best friend. Sophia's confidence in her was infuriating. And heartwarming. And terrifying.

"Soph, I don't know…"

"Trust me. This is meant for you." Her voice softened. "Don't let fear keep you from walking into a room you belong in. You only get one night to change everything. Who knows what you'll find?"

Lila didn't answer right away. She looked at the dress again, her heart beating faster.

One night.

One chance to step out of the shadows.

Could she really pull it off?

Sophia winked and tossed the gown onto her lap. "You've got the body. You've got the face. And now… you've got the dress. Game on, babe."

And just like that, Lila Hart's ordinary life began to unravel into something far more extraordinary.
