Chapter 1 - PROLOGUE

PROLOGUE

"Maya, wait behind after this class", Mrs Pearson, my homeroom teacher, said to me while addressing the entire class a few minutes before closing.

Strange, what does she want with me?" I thought. After her announcement, I gathered my things and walked up to her desk at the front of the class.

"Here, have a seat." She offered willingly pointing at one of the empty chairs opposite hers.

I helped myself to the chair, sat down opposite her, waiting patiently to hear what she has to say.

"Maya, how are you doing today ?" she asked, feigning a smile "Your grades remain magnificent; I'm so proud of you." She paused. "I requested you stay behind to commend you on your hard work, participation in school and community activities, maintaining a 5.0 GPA, alongside other activities you participate in. I want you to know I see you may" she added

"It's nothing, thanks, ma'am ", I replied, finding it hard to figure out where all these originated from..." if that's all, ma'am, my driver has arrived at the parking lot; I should get going," I concluded. I placed my school bag across my shoulder and then stood up from the seat.

"No, you can't go except I'm done here," she said almost calmly with the hand holding me back

Crazy!, I thought. "Mrs Pearson, let me go!" I exclaimed since everything started to seem extremely strange and cringed. "You're hurting me, let go!" I panicked trying to remove her palm across my wrist. The atmosphere setting in the room changed, the classroom was filled with fog, the palm wrapped across mine isn't Mrs Pearson's anymore it's a palm covered with fur, out of fear and astonishment I tried to see her face through the fog, the face I saw is Mrs Pearson but not in her human form, the figure in the fog is half human half deer with Mrs Pearson's face...

"holy shit!" I screamed in disgust and fear as tears settled beneath my eyes, still trying to free my wrist from the grasp...

Then I heard a distorted voice "May! May!" are you listening to me at all?" The voice asked. Trying to regain consciousness, the fog cleared, the hybrid vanished, and I was back in the classroom again, sitting opposite Mrs Pearson. Cleared my throat "sorry....what happened ?" I asked looking perplexed

May dear, are you okay?" She asked stretching forth her hand to feel my temperature.

"I'm completely fine" I responded. Adjusted back a little with her palm halfway across the table in between us.

"You seem nervous and uncomfortable, have I done anything wrong during the course of the week as your teacher?" she asked looking concerned

"No, ma'am", I responded almost calmly, suppressing my nervous cells.

"Good, so like I said earlier, you've done a great job withholding your grades. There's a job I'd like you to take care of; a new student is joining us next week, Dave Frostman; he's average in academics and wants to apply to Harvard or Stanford University college, which is impossible cause riches can't get you into those league colleges. With your grades and mock-ups, the citadel can write a letter of recommendation to any school in the state or country You're one of the top most intelligent students this academy has, which is why I want you to tutor him, bring out the best in his academics through him, and I promise you it's a hell of a pay..." she concluded smiling mischievously towards me

I cleared my throat." Since he's a new student, can't you just direct him to some other academy to train him? Why this academy? And why me??" I asked curiously

"his dad is of great contribution to the existence of this school, and we can't afford to lose a whale cause of a tadpole," she said frankly. "think about this and get back to me this time tomorrow, this job will boost your CV too" she added

"Okay then, I'll get back to you; I should get going,", I said hastily, hoping nothing cringe would occur...

"That's all dear, you are free to go," she said, walking me towards the door "My regards to your mom", she concluded, beading me goodbye...

"yea.hh..h" I replied with a nervous smile. Walked through the door into the hallway with hundreds of lockers converged sequentially across the aisle towards the main door...

I walked down the aisle, trying all possibilities not to freak out from the strange event experience...
