After getting unpacked I called it a day since we had class first thing in the morning. Atlas gave me looks as we got ready in the morning. Brenda had told me about their interaction on day one of the enrollment test. I noticed the looks but I was used to it from mermaids. No matter how hard I tried I could not fully hide all the pain I was in. I am lucky that Brenda was a Dragon shift.
Students filled into the classroom talking among themselves.
" So how is your roommate?" Brenda asked.
" Not quite sure." I answered " he seems stiff. I don't think he likes me."
" I mean you did beat him at almost everything." She answered, " You probably hurt his feelings."
Before I could respond to that the teacher walked in. She was a tall woman in her late thirties. " Good morning students, I am Mrs. Pickleton. I will be going over the history of our magic and shifts. This class will be one of the easiest ones that you will have. Let's get started."
She handed out text books and began to tell us the history of how we got our shifts. She then started talking about our elemental magic.
" As you know each of you have been blessed by the earth spirits, they go hand and hand with your shift. The constellations that give you your shifts and the earth spirits that give you your elemental powers are both the children of the gods. Why they are no longer associated with the gods is something we will learn about later."
She continued retelling things that we should have learned from our parents. The next class of the day is one that I am looking forward to. It was a combat class. Granted it went just like our history class. He went over what we were going to be learning. Luckily tomorrow we will be getting hands on practice to see what we know. At some point I got a text from Erin. he told me that there was an emergency meeting at Cepheus. The next part of my day was individual element work. First thing this morning I got with the headmaster to work out a plan. He was super excited about the fact that I had more than one element. He told me that it was super rare for someone to have all six of them. It has been a few hundred years since someone like me. To compensate for all of it, I will be taking one elemental class everyday and having a rest day on Sunday. Today's class is water. I was dreading tomorrow's class with its fire. I have a bad history with it.
" Look who decided to join us." Simon said as I slid into the room.
" Sorry I am late. My last class went longer than expected." I replied ignoring him.
" As I was saying, " Erin continued, " There was an outbreak at Rockstone."
" I thought Rockstone was inescapable." Libra asked.
Erin nodded grimly " It is supposed to be. But from the word on the street they had outside help."
" What does that have to do with me?" I asked.
" Your father was one of the escapees." Simon said almost happily.
Everything felt like it was spinning. I heard someone say that the meeting was over. I could not breathe no matter how many breaths I took. My lungs would not take any. An ache started to form in my chest.
Pain flooded through as I was strapped down to a table. Victor stood at my head writing on a clipboard. He then started to speak into a recorder.
" The patient is showing signs of distress. The crest is keeping her conscious. The more pain that she is in the more the scales start to show."
As he spoke, a pounding on the door started. Soon it grew loud enough that he stopped talking. The door busted open and Erin's face appeared in front of me. His voice was gentle as he told me that it was okay. The surroundings changed back to his office.
He wiped the tears from my eyes and said " Everything is going to be okay. Just breathe."
Slowly I ground myself. " I am okay." I said
" Are you sure?" He asked
" Yeah I am." I replied, " It just surprised me that he was able to escape."
" I know. I wanted to warn you but I got busy after I sent that text."
Brenda walked in and said " hey is everything okay?"
" yeah just some bad memories" I said getting up from the couch. I did not realize that I was moved.
Brenda placed her hand on my shoulder and said " you don't have to go through this alone. I will be here to listen."
I taped my head against hers and said " I know but these memories are safer with me."
She nodded. " I have a few things that I need to do but we can meet up later." She said
I nodded and headed out. I decided to look over town closer to the school. While most of the Vycreek is a huge city closer to the school, it was more of a small town. There were a lot of mom and pop shops. Several of them caught my eye when I arrived at school. My first stop was a coffee shop called Java Jive. The menu was simple. Several of the drinks were named after important people. Some were named after classes in school.
" What can I get you?" The barista asked
" What is the Witch's Trial?" I asked
" It is a mocha caramel macchiato."
" Let me go with that." I said
I sat down at a small table looking out the window. The castle looks majestic sitting on the hill with the sun setting behind it. A shadow caught my eyes. I turned to the alleyway that it was at and there was no one there. I shook my head thinking ' There is no way that is him. I am being paranoid'
A hot drink and a stack of papers were placed before me. The barista was gone before I could ask about the papers. Looking through them I realized that it was inside information. I sent Erin a text asking what Java Jive was. I am pretty sure it is an information guild but It could just be someone wanting to help. But help never comes without a price.
