Chapter 61 - Stands × and × Nen

Dissecting Chimera Ant corpses. Watching Kite carve through Ants like a supernatural storm.

That had become Joey's routine ever since joining the cleanup operation.

He was an observer. A field cleaner. A glorified intern.

Sometimes he got to fight — but it was mostly isolated Upper Soldier Ants.

Their strength varied wildly. Most had developed Nen in sloppy, chaotic ways.

Even when the fight wasn't easy, Joey never felt like he was in real danger.

And as time passed, the fights became even easier.

Against these half-baked grunts — barely tougher than base soldiers — he didn't even need Killer Queen or Gold Experience.

A solid grasp of Nen fundamentals was enough to wipe them out.

But during this time, a question kept gnawing at him.

Does erasure really cost aura to use?

And is my Stand... becoming a Nen beast?

That was what confused him.

What exactly was a Stand?

In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Stands were originally tied to Hamon — Ripple energy.

They came from spirit, from breath. Joey wasn't sure of all the details, but he did remember one key point:

Stands were spiritual manifestations.

Their power was linked to the mental and emotional state of their user.

So did Yoshikage Kira — the original user of Killer Queen — ever suffer aura fatigue?

Joey doubted it.

His turning point came when he remembered erasure was Killer Queen's true First Bomb effect.

Once he remembered that — Killer Queen's explosions started to erase instead of detonate.

But why, then, did erasure cost more aura?

That didn't make sense.

Why should aura drain depend on the form of the explosion?

Was it because the target resisted? That wasn't logical. If resistance determined cost, the skill became unreliable.

If the cost depended on increasing the explosion range with aura — well, that sounded more like Enhancer-type mechanics than anything innate to a Stand.

That's when Joey realized what he'd been missing.

Balance.

Erasing aura-infused meat chunks took extra aura. Why?

Because Joey believed it had to.

He decided, subconsciously, "These pieces have Nen. I must use Nen to destroy them."

That belief created balance:

To destroy aura-cloaked flesh → spend aura.

To trigger a bomb → spend stamina.

To expand blast radius → spend more aura.

To use erasure, which is stronger than explosion → spend even more aura.

Balance. Equivalence. Compensation.

All ideas rooted in Nen logic.

But do Stands care about balance?

Hell no.

Star Platinum stops time.

Crazy Diamond repairs anything.

Gold Experience grants life.

King Crimson deletes time itself.

None of those abilities require stamina.

They aren't balanced.

They're just how the Stand works.

Killer Queen was born to erase.

Joey had been the one forcing it to obey Nen's logic.

Because Joey had accepted — on a fundamental level — that this world runs on balance.

Give to get. Power must be paid for.

And in this world, that was true.

Vows and Limitations are the foundation of high-level Nen.

But a Stand?

That came from spirit, not structure.

It followed the will of its user — not the rules of this world.

Killer Queen could use Nen. It could be buffed with Nen.

But it didn't require Nen to function.

When Joey finally understood this truth, everything clicked.

He activated First Bomb on the 37th Chimera Ant corpse.

No aura. No balance. No cost.

Just a single thumb press.

And the body vanished — completely erased from reality, not even dust left behind.

For the first time, Joey felt perfect harmony with Killer Queen.

He laughed. Wide and honest.

Stands weren't Nen beasts.

They weren't contracts.

They were extensions of soul.

No cost. No rules. Just ability.

Killer Queen's explosions could still be enhanced with Nen, sure.

Just like Joey could enhance his own strength or speed.

But the base effect? The erasure?

That wasn't Nen.

That was Stand Power.

The leftover aura-laced meat chunks from previous bombs?

Killer Queen had left those on purpose — like Kira used to keep severed hands.

They were intentional. Not a limitation.

The only thing that had ever limited Killer Queen…

Was Joey.

His own beliefs.

His own expectations.

His insistence on rules.

Now that he'd cast those shackles aside — Killer Queen's abilities began to shine.

Bombs required no aura.

No stamina.

No balance.

Because spirit needs no fuel.

Kite had been right.

When the time came to fight the Ant King…

Joey would be the trump card.

He dismissed Killer Queen with a flicker of aura, smiling.

He'd finally found the evolutionary path of his Stand.

Not through Nen.

Through will.

Nen was his own path.

Killer Queen had its own.

They could support each other.

They could intertwine.

But neither would ever be chained by the other again.

Over the next few days, Joey's control over Killer Queen became surgical.

He could erase without effort. Detonate with flair. And more importantly:

He could choose.

And with every fight, every dissection, every thought — Killer Queen's raw absurdity began to emerge.

By the fourth day, a call came in from Morel.

Everyone stopped what they were doing and began moving toward the Republic of Rokario.

Chimera Ants were starting to show up on national broadcasts.

Soldiers had been killed by them. Panic was spreading in the border towns.

And yet…

There were crowds of thrill-seekers armed with camcorders and selfie sticks, eager to capture monsters on film.

Due to V5 censorship, the term "Chimera Ant" hadn't been released publicly.

Instead, the government coined a new name:

U.M.A.

Unidentified Mysterious Animals.

In news segments and press releases, the monsters weren't called Ants — they were UMAs.

The threat was growing.

But so was Joey.

And now?

He was ready.
