Chapter 1 - The last day

As she stood on the balcony, the warm sunlight danced across her face, and the sweet scent of blooming flowers enveloped her senses. Spring had finally arrived in the city, and with it, the vibrant colors and lively atmosphere seemed to pulse through every corner.

The park nearby was abuzz with people strolling hand-in-hand, taking in the breathtaking views of the blossoming gardens. Children's laughter echoed through the air, their carefree energy infectious as they chased each other around the flowerbeds, adding to the joyful ambiance that filled the city.

Yes, this was it. A perfect farewell sight.

She had always found joy in watching other people being happy, satisfied with the little things they had.

She knew how precious life was because she had never taken it for granted. Born with illness, she faced limitations and struggles that taught her to appreciate every moment. Now, knocking on death's door, she reflected on the life she had lived and the beauty she found in its smallest moments.

She then touched the railing with her delicate hands, and a smile spread across her face. Tears welled up, and before she knew it, they were streaming down her cheeks.

Was this really the end of her imperfect life? She knew the answer, but she still couldn't help but be a little hopeful. She, too, wanted to be happy. She, too, wanted to run around and appreciate the flowers. Was that too much to ask for?

But when she remembered that there was really no solution to her problem, the little hope that she had instantly shuddered into pieces and more tears fell. Life was truly unfair.

Living a normal life had always been a dream. Her life was a relentless parade of problems. She often wondered if she was cursed. Every time she grabbed onto some little hope, it would not take long before it would disappear.

For instance, there was a young, handsome doctor who once promised to cure her. His determination filled her with hope because she knew of his reputation. Most importantly, she believed his eyes. She believed that his eyes would never lie.

He had always been with her since she was admitted to the hospital. He was that little light in her dark world. But now it had been more than a month since he disappeared. No one knew where he was. Did he run away because he was afraid of failure?

What hurt the most was the fact that he willingly made the promise but chose to break it without an explanation. If he was unable to do it, he could have just said so. She would not have blamed him even the tiniest bit. She knew the difficulty of her situation.

She was mostly sad about the fact that he was not even there to bid her goodbye. She knew her body very well. She was sure that she would not make it until the following day. Actually, she would not make it past midnight.

She wiped her tears and dragged her thin, weak body back to her bed. She slowly lay down and covered herself with the thin blanket. It was white and had little pink flowers. It was a gift from that doctor. She cherished it very much. She looked at it and thought; even the blanket was more colorful than her life.

Life was really funny. She had parents, siblings, and a friend, but none of them were there to accompany her during her last days. She could not bring herself to blame them as she made made up her mind to spend her last moments in peace. Blaming them would only bring her more pain.

Just as she was about to close her eyes, the door was kicked open, and a middle-aged man slowly made his way in.

She looked over and saw that it was her father. She subconsciously smiled. At least she wouldn't be alone.

"Dad..."

The man's frown deepened as he looked at her, his expression twisted in a mix of pain and confusion. It was as if the frail figure before him was a stranger, not the daughter he'd known and loved. He saw the girl's mouth move, but he did not hear what she said as his mind was preoccupied by what he was about to say.

"I am very disappointed in you. To think that you of all people would steal from me. I hope your greed dies with you."
