Chapter 20 - Cradle of Roots

The Singing Glade slowly faded from view as Marcus guided Dawnfyr through the dense, enchanted forest. With the first sanctuary completed and the shard of memory pulsing brightly in his inventory, he felt a newfound determination driving him forward. The glow of the Verdant Song Pendant around his neck reminded him of what lay ahead: the liberation of the Dryad Queen and the unraveling of the World Enemy's looming threat.

His next destination was clear—the Cradle of Roots, a hidden grotto rumored to hold ancient Dryad relics. From the description on his map, Marcus understood it to be a place of deep connection to the Verdant Queen's power, but also one laced with traps and guardians to test any who dared to enter.

As he approached the forest's edge, Marcus stopped to prepare for the journey ahead. He opened his inventory, reviewing his gear and supplies carefully.

After his recent trials, Marcus knew better than to leave anything to chance. He stocked up on potions and status recovery items during a brief stop in Thistlewood Rest, prioritizing those that would assist him in battles with nature-based enemies.

Healing Elixirs (Restores 200 HP): x10.

Mana Crystals (Restores 100 MP): x8.

Antidote Blossoms (Cures poison and paralysis): x6.

Stonebark Powder (Temporarily increases Physical Defense by 10%): x5.

Equipped with these essentials, Marcus ensured Crimson Fang and the Verdant Codex were ready for action. "The Singing Glade was just the warm-up," he muttered, gripping his sword tightly. "Let's see what the Cradle of Roots has in store."

The Cradle of Roots was unlike anything Marcus had encountered before. The entrance was a cavernous maw at the base of an ancient tree so massive its roots formed bridges and walls of their own. Glowing runes covered the roots, their faint green light illuminating the dense fog that clung to the ground.

The moment Marcus stepped inside, the air grew thick with magic. Tendrils of light twisted and coiled along the walls, and the faint hum of energy reverberated through the grotto. The Shard of Verdant Memory in his inventory pulsed once, signaling the significance of the place.

But Marcus barely had time to take it all in before the first obstacle made its appearance. Emerging from the shadows were Rootbound Stalkers, beast-like creatures made entirely of roots and bark. Their glowing green eyes locked onto Dawnfyr, and they charged as one.

Marcus activated Fearsome Aura immediately, slowing the Stalkers' movements as he prepared for their assault. The first Stalker lunged, its razor-sharp claws slashing through the air. Marcus sidestepped, countering with Quick Slash and landing three rapid strikes.

Damage Dealt: 80 Physical ATK per strike.

Damage Taken: 25 Physical ATK (glancing blow).

The second and third Stalkers flanked him, their coordinated attacks forcing Marcus onto the defensive. He activated Blossom Shield, reducing the incoming damage as he pivoted to strike back.

Damage Taken: 40 Physical ATK (reduced by Blossom Shield).

Damage Dealt with Sylvan Strike: 90 Physical ATK + 40 Magic ATK.

As the Stalkers regrouped for another attack, Marcus unleashed Verdant Cascade, the AoE spell sweeping through the battlefield and dealing consistent damage.

Damage Dealt with Verdant Cascade: 120 Magic ATK per target.

Healing Received: +15% HP (forest synergy).

The Stalkers fell, their forms dissolving into glowing particles that merged with the runes on the walls. A notification appeared:

Challenge Progress: Rootbound Stalkers Defeated. Progress: 1/3.

Marcus smirked, wiping imaginary sweat from his brow. "One down," he muttered, moving deeper into the Cradle.

The next chamber of the grotto was filled with ancient stone constructs overgrown with roots and vines. These Rootwarden Constructs were slow but heavily armored, their massive stone arms capable of crushing enemies with ease. Marcus knew brute force alone wouldn't work here—he'd need to rely on his magic to exploit their weaknesses.

The first Construct swung its arm in a wide arc, the sheer force of the attack sending a shockwave across the chamber. Marcus activated Blade Storm, his new AoE skill, to counter.

Damage Dealt with Blade Storm: 100 Physical ATK per target.

Damage Taken: 35 Physical ATK (shockwave).

The Constructs seemed to grow more aggressive, their movements guided by the glowing runes on their bodies. Marcus activated Verdant Cataclysm, summoning a wave of roots and thorns that enveloped the Constructs.

Damage Dealt with Verdant Cataclysm: 120 Magic ATK per target.

MP Cost: 100 MP.

The Constructs crumbled, their shattered pieces glowing faintly as they dissolved into the grotto's energy. Another notification appeared:

Challenge Progress: Rootwarden Constructs Defeated. Progress: 2/3.

"Almost there," Marcus said, downing a Mana Crystal to replenish his MP. "What's next?"

At the heart of the grotto, Marcus found himself standing before a massive chamber where the roots twisted into an intricate web, forming a towering figure in the center. The Guardian of the Cradle—a colossal, humanoid tree-like entity—awakened as Marcus approached, its glowing green eyes locking onto him.

The Guardian roared, the vibrations shaking the entire chamber. Marcus braced himself as the first attack came—a volley of energy-infused roots shot toward him like spears. He dodged, activating **Blossom Shield** to absorb the few that grazed him.

Damage Taken: 45 Magic ATK (reduced by Blossom Shield).

Marcus retaliated with Sylvan Strike, his blade glowing as it struck the Guardian's massive leg.

Damage Dealt with Sylvan Strike: 90 Physical ATK + 40 Magic ATK.

The Guardian slammed its fists into the ground, unleashing a shockwave that forced Marcus to leap back. He activated Verdant Cascade, the AoE spell weakening the Guardian's defenses.

Damage Dealt with Verdant Cascade: 120 Magic ATK.

Healing Received: +15% HP.

The battle raged on, each attack from the Guardian testing Marcus's reflexes and endurance. As his HP dipped dangerously low, Marcus chugged a Healing Elixir and activated Verdant Cataclysm one final time, the powerful magic overwhelming the Guardian and shattering its form.

Damage Dealt with Verdant Cataclysm: 120 Magic ATK.

XP Gained: 3,500.

The Guardian let out a final roar as it collapsed, its essence merging with the roots of the grotto. A notification appeared:

Second Sanctuary Completed: Cradle of Roots Trial Conquered. Verdant Memory Awakened: 2/3.

The shard of memory pulsed once more, its glow intensifying as another fragment of the Dryad Queen's essence was awakened. Marcus received his rewards:

Item Acquired: Rootbound Crown (+10% Physical Defense, +5% Magic Resistance).

XP Gained: 3,500.

Subclass Progress: Dryad Subclass Level +1.

Marcus equipped the Rootbound Crown, its design a seamless blend of wood and gold, before taking a deep breath. Two sanctuaries down, one to go.

"The Verdant Aerie," Marcus muttered, his eyes narrowing as he checked the map. "Let's finish this."
