Chapter 8 - Hidden Quest

The faint hum of his gaming pod filled the air as Marcus logged into YGGDRASIL early in the morning, the soft blue light of dawn barely creeping through his penthouse windows. The moment his screen transitioned to the game, Dawnfyr materialized in his most recent log-off location, the clearing on the edge of Myrrhwood Vale, his new Forest Ogre form basked in the early in-game sunlight.

As the world finished rendering around him, Marcus sat back and muttered to himself, "All right, let's see what kind of loot I got from Veilroot Hollow." He'd been too exhausted to check his inventory after the intense dungeon run, but the idea of sifting through rare items now brought a grin to his face.

He opened his inventory, scrolling through the rewards. There were a few high-tier potions, crafting materials, and even a legendary accessory—the Embervine Amulet, which provided an 8% boost to HP regeneration. "Not bad," Marcus said, nodding in approval.

But then something caught his attention. Nestled at the very bottom of his inventory was a peculiar item: the Ancient Fragment of Veilroot—the seemingly useless piece of bark he had bought from the store to activate the dungeon. Its description hadn't changed, and Marcus was tempted to just move it to storage. But as he hovered over the item, a sudden glow engulfed his screen.

Notification: The Ancient Fragment reacts to your touch. Quest Triggered: Save the Imprisoned Dryad Queen, Elyssera.

A larger pop-up window emerged, detailing the quest: Hidden Side Quest: Roots of the Fallen

The Dryads of the ancient forests have long been protectors of the natural world, but their ranks have been diminished by the influence of a World Enemy, a cataclysmic force that corrupts all it touches. The Dryad Queen, Elyssera, Keeper of Verdant Souls, has been imprisoned within the Petrastorm Depths, a labyrinth of stone and twisted magic located in the southern region of Alfheim.

For centuries, her absence has allowed the corruption to spread unchecked, warping the once-beautiful Dryads into their corrupted forms. Without her guidance, the Dryads remain scattered, incapable of resisting the influence of the World Enemy.

Your Objective:

1. Venture to the Petrastorm Depths.

2. Defeat the guardians of the labyrinth.

3. Liberate Elyssera from her prison.

Quest Benefits:

- Unique Class Advancement: Unlock Dryad subclass features (Tier III).

- Exclusive Equipment Set: Verdant Sovereignty

- Reputation with Neutral Nature Factions: +500 points.

Requirements:

- Minimum Level: 28.

- Completion Time Frame: 6 months.

The glowing text faded as Marcus leaned forward, staring at the screen. His jaw hung open slightly as he processed the information. "Six months, huh?" he muttered, his voice tinged with excitement. "And the Dryad subclass can advance… Okay, this is huge."

He reread the details of the quest, paying particular attention to the lore. The mention of a World Enemy made his stomach tighten. As a veteran fan of Overlord, he remembered just how dangerous World Enemies were—entities with godlike power capable of reshaping entire ecosystems or annihilating civilizations. While the specifics of this particular World Enemy weren't revealed, it was clear that its influence had utterly ravaged the Dryads.

Marcus clenched his fist, a determined grin spreading across his face. "Saving a queen, advancing my subclass, and getting awesome loot? Yeah, this is happening. Guess I'll need to level up fast."

As he closed the quest window, another notification popped up:

Reminder: You have six months to complete Roots of the Fallen. Progress at your own pace.

Determined to prepare for the quest, Marcus opened his world map, scanning for a suitable grinding spot. His eyes landed on a region called Ashenwild Expanse, a sprawling grassland on the outskirts of a volcanic ridge. The area was known for its dense camps of Charred Gnarlfiends, small but vicious mob monsters that resembled humanoid lizards coated in blackened scales and molten cracks.

"They're perfect," Marcus said, marking the location on his map. "Good XP, tough but manageable mobs, and it'll push my Swordsman class further. Time to get to work."

Equipping himself with Crimson Fang and the new Embervine Amulet, Dawnfyr adjusted his gear and set off. His crimson skin glinted in the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, the green vine-like markings on his body subtly glowing with a faint hum.

"This subclass is going to be insane once it levels up," Marcus muttered, mentally mapping out his strategy.

The trek to the Ashenwild Expanse was uneventful, the dense forests of Myrrhwood gradually giving way to open plains dotted with scorched trees and jagged rocks. Dawnfyr arrived at the edge of the expanse, his sharp eyes spotting the first group of Charred Gnarlfiends huddled around a smoldering fire pit.

He grinned, gripping his greatsword. "Let's see what you've got."

The Gnarlfiends noticed him immediately, their glowing orange eyes narrowing as they hissed and charged. There were five in total, each wielding crude stone weapons that gleamed with heat.

Dawnfyr activated Fearsome Aura, the passive skill causing the Gnarlfiends to falter slightly as their Agility decreased by 10%. He followed up with Quick Slash, the rapid strikes landing on the first Gnarlfiend with precision.

Damage Dealt: 65 Physical ATK per strike.

Damage Taken: 22 Physical ATK (counter-strike from a club).

The second Gnarlfiend lunged, swiping at Dawnfyr with molten claws. He dodged to the side, activating Sylvan Strike to summon a spectral blade that cleaved through the Gnarlfiend's torso.

Damage Dealt: 90 Physical ATK (Critical Hit).

The remaining enemies circled him, their movements erratic and unpredictable. Marcus could feel the heat of their molten forms even through the screen. One Gnarlfiend swung low, catching him on the leg.

Damage Taken: 30 Physical ATK (burn damage applied).

Marcus winced, quickly downing a Healing Elixir to recover. "Okay, you're tougher than you look," he admitted.

He activated Verdant Cascade, the AoE spell unleashing a wave of magical vines that slammed into the remaining Gnarlfiends.

Damage Dealt: 55 Magic ATK per target.

One by one, the Gnarlfiends fell, their bodies collapsing into heaps of smoldering ash. A notification appeared:

Experience Gained: 750 XP

"Not bad for the first camp," Marcus said, stretching his fingers. "Only a couple hundred more kills to go…"

As Dawnfyr moved deeper into the Ashenwild Expanse, Marcus's mind buzzed with plans. Between farming mobs, improving his gear, and preparing for the quest to save Elyssera, he had plenty to keep him busy. For the first time in weeks, he felt like he was truly starting to carve his own path in YGGDRASIL.
