Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Onset of Turmoil

regardless of whether the news was true or not, he decided to leave himself a way out.the mighty tiger lair had managed to survive the imperial government's siege up until now because of his cautiousness.

"little six, take the brothers to the side gate and prepare some wooden barrels by the waterway.old four, old five, you two get the brothers to pack up and get ready to flee.old three, you and old seven go to qingya county and find li yuanwai. see if you can gather any useful information."

li yuanwai was a contact of the mighty tiger lair in qingya county, and many of the lair's illicit dealings were handled through him.

a clever rabbit has three burrows, meaning even a cunning rabbit would prepare multiple escape routes. as bandits, they naturally had backup plans of their own. they couldn't just take chen luo's word for everything.

"understood!"

with the order given, the entire mighty tiger lair sprang into action.

"gentlemen, please follow me to the inner room to discuss matters."

chief cai walked over to chen luo and said politely.

as he spoke, he returned the thirty taels of silver he had just received from chen lao san, and not only that, he added an extra ten taels.

"there's no need for this," he said.

chen lao san felt a bit embarrassed. after all, he had come asking for help, but in the end, not only did he not get his money back, he had earned an extra ten taels.

"take it," chen luo said.

he knew that chief cai was still a bit uneasy, partly because of chen luo's strength, and partly because of the news he had brought. after all, it involved the lives of everyone in the lair, so it was only natural to be cautious.

"since chief cai is so sincere, i can't just stand by and do nothing. here's an internal piece of news, and i'll give it to you, chief cai."

chen luo walked over to chief cai and said, as if making casual conversation.

as for what the internal news was, and which "internal" it referred to, only chen luo himself knew. chen lao san, who followed behind him, had completely stopped talking. he realized that his nephew had a way of talking people into things, making it sound even more convincing than the truth.

"please, go ahead."

chief cai said, his posture much more humble now, a stark contrast to the confident demeanor he had when he first entered the lair.

"there's not much time left."

chen luo said mysteriously.

exactly how much time, and why it was running out, was all up to one's imagination.

upon hearing chen luo's hint, chief cai clearly thought of something, and his expression shifted slightly.

in his mind, chen luo, as an internal cultivation expert, would not come to deceive him for no reason. given his strength and status, chen luo surely knew some information that was unknown to the outside world.

after leading the two into the inner room, chief cai asked more detailed questions. chen luo responded carefully, and in the process, he took out the royal token and placed it on the table. this thoroughly convinced chief cai, who had still held a small doubt.

"little luo, isn't this a bit..."

seeing chief cai hurry off, chen lao san finally couldn't help but speak up.

"i'm saving him."

chen luo knew what his third uncle was thinking, but with the situation having reached this point, there was no need to dwell on such details anymore.

surviving first is the truth!

time passed, and half a day had gone by in the blink of an eye.

in that half-day, it was clear that something had gone wrong in qingya county. old three and old seven, who had gone to gather information, had completely lost contact. no one knew if they were trapped in the city or if something else had happened to them. this uncertainty made everyone in the lair even more uneasy.

"smoke is rising from qingya county! there are sounds of fighting and clashing swords. i saw many flags surrounding the area."

the bandit responsible for keeping watch quickly ran in to report the situation to chief cai.

"smoke is rising?"

chief cai's face changed at once.

thick smoke visible in broad daylight left little to the imagination. it was clear that a fire had broken out over there.

someone had set the city on fire!

"big brother, what should we do now? third brother and old seven still haven't returned."

the remaining bandits asked anxiously, their faces filled with worry.

chief cai hadn't expected the situation to change so quickly. luckily, their lair was a bit far from the city, giving them some time to react. had they been closer, they might have already been caught up in it.

"old five, you take the women and children from the lair and leave first. the rest of us will stay behind to hold them off."

after a brief moment of consideration, chief cai made his decision.

"understood."

old five, who had been called, quickly stood up and headed out the door.

"third uncle, you should go with them too," chen luo said at the right moment.

once his third uncle escaped, it would be much easier for him to handle things alone.

"let's go together! why are you dragging your feet?"

chen lao san immediately became anxious. the thing he was most worried about was his nephew chen luo. in his eyes, his nephew's life was far more precious than his own.

"i'll be there soon."

chen luo wasn't truly fearless of death. he wasn't staying behind to hold them off; he simply wanted to see if any good opportunities would arise, so he could take a few more heads.
