Chapter 2 - A plan for action

Just then, William came out of his room after hearing the loud screeches. He was startled from the scene in front of him.

"Wha... What is that thing?!" he exclaimed.

"I don't.. huff.. I don't know. It was in the.. wait, the attic!"

Adam quickly climbed up to see Beth still hanging upside down, now seemingly unconscious.

"Beth!"

He tried to cut away the webbing holding her up, but it was too thick for his carving dagger. He called for William.

"Will, get me my sword!" he pleaded.

William responded, "Why? Wh.. what's even happening?! What is this thing, how did it get in he-"

"Get my sword, NOW!" Adam interrupted. There's no time to waste, who knows what that thing did to Beth under all of this webbing.

Without another word, William ran to his father's room and snagged the sword that was resting against the wall. He went up to the attic, finally understanding why his father sounded so desperate, quickly handing him the sword.

With one precise slash, the web was cut loose and Adam caught Beth before she could hit the ground. setting her down gently, He started to cut through the layers of web that Beth was trapped in.

William asked again, "What was that thing downstairs? How did it even get in here?"

Adam, having calmed down a bit, answered, "Will, I already told you, I don't know. I heard some commotion up here, and when I opened the hatch I saw Beth almost getting eaten by whatever that thing is."

William hurried back down, not being able to bear the scene. As Adam was cutting away the

webs that entangled Beth's stomach, he revealed something.

"Oh, god.."

He found two gaping holes there. They didn't seem to be bleeding, which didn't make sense. They were such large wounds, why was it not bleeding everywhere? Wait, was she even alive?

"Please, don't leave me, Beth.."

He checked her pulse.

"Fuck... why..."

Nothing.

No. She was still alive when i found her. The spider couldn't have killed her, he thought.

If it couldn't have been that spider, then what gave her this wound?

What killed my wife?

He looked around the attic. Now that he thought about it, the wind was louder than it usually is. He noticed the hole they were supposed to repair, you could easily tell it was bigger now. He peered through the hole, feeling the cold breeze hit his face.

On the street he could just barely make out something scurrying away into one of the many dark alleyways along the street.

He knew where he had to go next.

He kissed Beth's now cold forehead, a momentary goodbye, before making his way down from the now unsightly attic. Near the mangled corpse of the spider Adam had killed, was William, trying to figure out just what that thing was.

As he entered the hallway, his nose was instantly washed over with a putrid smell. "Eugh, Will, what are you still doing here? I thought you'd at least go a little farther away from this.. thing."

"Yeah, well, I probably should've, but i've never seen anything like this before. Even you haven't met one of these things before, and you killed it so easily!"

Adam felt uncomfortable with how excited William was, though you can't blame the kid too much. he didn't really take that close of a look when his father was cutting open the web his late mother was encased in.

"Listen, Will. I don't think our home is safe anymore. You have to stay in your room for now, and barricade the door. I'm going to be going out for a while. Don't try to follow me."

William responded, "Wha.. what do you mean! So what if one of these things got in?! I'm sure I could easily ki-"

Adam walked closer to him. Adam's broad shoulders and tall stature made him tower over his son, letting his next words deal a much heavier blow.

"Your mother is dead. That thing on the floor, or one of it's kin, killed her."

William's knees felt as though they were going to give out.

"Wh.. what.."

He couldn't believe his father's words.

He hurried to check on her, or, as he would soon find out, what was left of her.

"Mother? Is everything alright..? Please, answer me.. please!"

Adam didn't have time to stick around for this. He needed to get his revenge.
