Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Return (1)

When Mia returned to the cottage by the sea, the wind greeted her like an old friend, brushing her cheeks with salty air and tousling her hair as if welcoming her home. The path that led from the road to the small, weatherworn house was lined with wildflowers and tall grass, swaying gently in the breeze. The sea, just visible beyond the cliffs, shimmered beneath the late afternoon sun. The sight of it—all of it—felt like a balm to her restless soul.

She hesitated for a moment outside the front door, her hand resting on the faded wooden frame. It had been days since she'd left, chasing answers and memories, hoping to find some sort of clarity in the echo of her past. And now, standing here again, with the smell of the sea and the quiet creak of the porch beneath her feet, she realized she had found more than answers—she had found herself.

The door opened before she could knock. Ethan stood in the doorway, just as she remembered him—steady, calm, like a lighthouse guiding her through every storm she'd faced. His brown hair was slightly tousled, his gray-blue eyes searching her face with gentle intensity. And then he smiled, that slow, warm smile that had always made her feel like she could breathe again.

"I'm glad you're home," he said softly, stepping forward and pulling her into a warm, familiar embrace.

Mia closed her eyes as she sank into his arms. For the first time in a long while, she felt truly safe. She hadn't realized how much she'd missed him—his presence, his quiet strength—until she was wrapped in it again.

"How did it go?" he asked, his voice a quiet murmur against her hair.

She pulled back slightly, enough to look up into his eyes. There was no pressure in his gaze, only patience. He didn't need her to rush. He just needed her truth.

"I think I needed to go back," she said, her voice steady, "to understand where I am now. I needed to confront my past, face what it still means to me—and then let it go."

Ethan's eyes softened as he reached down and took her hands in his. "And?"

"And I'm ready," she said, the words coming out with a certainty she hadn't felt in months. "I'm ready to be with you. I'm ready to build this life with you. No more doubts. No more fear."

His smile widened, radiant and full of emotion, and Mia's heart skipped a beat. She had seen him smile like that before—on quiet mornings when they made coffee in silence, on long walks by the beach when the world had felt like it was just the two of them. But this one was different. It carried with it hope. Relief. Love.

"I've been ready for a while now," he said, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

They stood in the quiet, the weight of the moment anchoring them. It wasn't dramatic or loud—it didn't need to be. Some of the most important moments in life arrived like this: soft, calm, inevitable.
